How much of Home Improvement was improvised?
In a recent announcement, Richard Karn, renowned for his role in the television series Last Man Standing, revealed his participation in the upcoming reality show Assembly Required. This program will adopt an improv-based format, with 12 hours of improv per day, similar to the approach taken by Al Borland and Tim Taylor. In January 2001, Tool announced a new album, Systema Encéphale, with a 12-song track list containing titles such as “Riverchrist”, “Numbereft”, “Encephatalis”, “Musick”, and “Coeliacus”. File-sharing networks such as Napster were flooded with bogus files bearing the titles’ names. A month later, the band revealed that the new album was actually titled Lateralus, with the name Systema Encéphale and the track list being a ruse.

I loved Richard Karn on Home Improvement. He was great as Tim Allen’s sidekick. He played Al Borland to perfection. I think everyone had an Al Borland in their lives at some point. I always looked forward to Home Improvement and Al as well as all of the other characters were well-rounded and relatable characters and I can’t believe it has been off the air for over 20 years! My family and I loved Home Improvement but it’s pretty funny in retrospect how Al Borland was supposed to be a second fiddle to Tim “The Toolman” Taylor, but he was actually a pretty cool and likable person, and Richard Karn totally made the role his own. Well, Richard Karn has been everywhere after Home Improvement was over. Back in 2002, he went on to replace the late great Louie Anderson on Family Feud during the show’s third run and second revival. Richard Karn would eventually leave Family Feud in 2006 only to be replaced by John O’Hurley. These days, Richard Karn has reunited with Tim Allen for a new television show or two.
