I have faced similar attacks by small ants on clocks and laptops. Somehow they are attracted by electronic gadgets. Att times they nibble on plastic gears, destroying them completely. Spiders sometimes build silken nests inside clocks, jamming up the works. The only way to prevent ants is to use a quick drying insecticide spray. But it should not be used in the clock’s parts as the solvent used in the pray could damage the delicate parts. Small lizards too, manage to get inside wall clocks and jam them up.
