Does Apple Fix Its Home Button?

Apple does not sell or replace home buttons alone, but they offer a service of installing a new home button and activating it with a soft cloth. The easiest option is to use Apple’s AssistiveTouch feature, which puts a virtual home button on your iPhone’s screen, allowing you to bypass the physical home button entirely. However, Apple does not sell or replace home buttons alone. The only fix through Apple or an AASP is a complete replacement (with exchange) or the front screen.

To fix a broken home button, you should calibrate your home by performing a forced restart (if possible). Many issues surrounding home button functionality are a result of repair attempts. To fix a broken home button, you should install a specially-made, universal-style home button, but note that these replacements only work as a button; Touch ID will not function. If your iPhone’s home button is starting to show signs of age and you’re past the point of warranty, you may want to try a do-it-yourself (DIY) repair.

To get service for your iPhone, schedule a visit at an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Store, send in for repair, or arrange to mail your product directly to Apple. Apple only repairs home buttons with a complete front screen assembly replacement.

Will Apple replace a broken home button?

Apple does not sell or replace home buttons alone, but rather, they require a complete replacement of the front screen assembly or access to Apple’s proprietary security equipment to pair the home button to the logic board. Even OEM Apple home buttons salvaged from other devices won’t work due to the security mechanism. Even if an aftermarket repair attempt is made, a complete replacement of the front screen assembly is likely required. For a 6s in the United States, this would cost $149 plus tax via an Apple Store.

Apple does not sell or replace home buttons alone, but rather, they prepare parts and take them to complete refurbished devices or their repair network, such as Apple Stores, repair centers, or Authorized Service Providers. Without the service, Apple or an AASP won’t perform the “pairing” step required to get the Touch ID on the home button to work.

The iPhone SE (third generation) is the only iPhone with a physical home button, but it’s a solid-state sensor with secure Touch ID. The iPhone 14 range offers only onscreen home buttons, so refurbished iPhones with a physical home button are an option for those who prefer the traditional look and feel of older models. Refurbished iPhones are not like regularly used smartphones, as they have been checked, tested, and repaired by professionals before being put up for sale.

  • Thank you Hugh! Your website gave me hope for my ADHD (not actually diagnosed with it, I just feel that he is) addled 12 year old son (he gets into all sorts of mischief). Your website made me want to find old discarded phones and buy the replacement parts for them and a set of tools, to see if he could be preoccupied with this trade, alongside his school work. He is alone at home and needs attention. We can only give him so much attention, as we have other children that need attention just as much… LoLoLoL! I just realised that I was venting 😅 sorry for the headache. And thank you very very much again, for your articles. Please keep up your marvelous work 😉👍

  • Hi Hugh ! I subscribed to your website since last year and you still impress and inspired me to fix many devices like you do. This is a really good job, furthermore with passion ! I’ve got a question about the Touch ID, can we fix the issue by reprogramming it with your JC Pro1000S, or this is not possible ? I’ve been looking for some articles about this process, but all articles I’ve seen showed that the only way to fix it is by soldering an other part of the Touch ID.

  • Literally, the EXACT thing I bought of eBay recently. Recently my iPhone 7 home button was damaged so I bought one of these to test out how well it performs Will do a article on it. judging on the performance in this article, it doesn’t look too bad! Literally bought over 10 phones gonna see if I can revive them and make a whole article on all of them! Keep up the great work Hugh loving the content!

  • Also you said companies should be able to not let you repair parts like the home button. But blocking replacements means it’s wayyy harder to hack. It could be possible to hack Touch ID if it could be replaced, putting your data at risk. What should happen though is that Apple should only replace the Touch ID not the whole screen too

  • To the guy on the article: Massive thanks for your hardwork and for showing this to the community but… to the rest of the viewers: This is the kind of reason why you should never buy apple products. They are purposely trying to rip you off doing reapairs why more complicated and charging you overpriced repairs cause they dont allow 3rd party technicias to do this kind of things, instead you need to pay for a full swapt. Things that should cost arroung 50 dolars can be as expensive as 200 if it’s an apple product. Not even a joke, checkout Louiss Rossman website to learn more about this kind of topics. Again, huge thanks to the owner of this website for showing us that there are ways to figure it out and find a new life with cheap resources for something that was broken and useless. Congrats for your amazing website.

  • There is a way Just hear me out If the button is parried to the motherboard can we power the home button separately and extract the code and flas it to the new button or could we desolder old chip from home button and place it on a new one To me it looks like 8 pin bare package, shouldn’t be to much trouble

  • I’ve used this so many times on customers phones who don’t care about Touch ID and just want the function back. I broke someone’s home button once, and gave them their screen replacement cost back and gave them an extra £50 for the inconvenience, and installed this that I got for £16. So much better than paying for an Apple screen replacement

  • A solid state button is supposed to last for very long and somehow, every iPhone 7 and 7+ owner I know has had their home button stop working, my sister’s iPhone 7’s home button stopped working a few weeks ago and Apple wanted to change the entire motherboard for the repair. She uses AssistiveTouch to use the home button now.

  • So I have a iPhone 8 that one of my friend gave me but it is rose gold with a white face and home button. I don’t like it and want to do a switch over to black. Meaning that the home button will have to be replaced as well. ReadinSg the description for a new one. It has a disclaimer stating this replacement is for decoration only and it won’t function on my 8. Am I reading this wrong or is this true? If so is there any other way around it. Please if any one has some solutions to my problem. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Regards

  • Hey Hugh Jeffreys do you think you could fix my iPad I have been perusal you for a long time and I recently shattered my screen and I really want to fix it because none of the shops around me will fix it because it’s a bit bent I would be happy to pay for all you would need to do is a screen and inside replacement. Thanks for reading regards nugetguy123 😀

  • The home button for the iPhone 7 and 8 can now replaced via third party. you will regain home button functionality but will lose touch I.D. if you are wondering how i know that: i live with an APPLE IOS Sr. Advisor. they told me that it was a bug that would not let the replacement button stop working

  • My display of iPhone SE was crashed, including the home button. Later on I managed to get a new display of another set. Unfortunately, in this way I’ve lost my Touch ID. Every time, when I attempted to register my fingerprint, I got a message, “Unable to complete Touch ID setup. Please go back and try again.” In this way I’ve lost my mobile security. Could you please suggest me the way of solving the problem?

  • Apple: You’re not supposed to fix your iPhone 3gs! You have to trade it in and get the iPhone 8 Plus or later. Me: Hold my beer! Me: replaces battery and housing carefully Apple: How did you survive? Me: I watched a Hugh Jeffreys article and that guy said “Li-ion batteries are safer than you think they are unless you are super reckless with them,” when he pulled out an expanded iPhone 6s+ battery. Also me: Don’t lock iPhone batteries and DO NOT discourage independent repair, even if you think it’s too dangerous. Apple: Okay.

  • I get why you don’t get Touch ID if you replace. Non cryptographically paired opens up a vulnerability to unlock your iPhone. But no actual home button functionality damn Apple wtf. I get why the X has none though, and why the 7 and onwards didn’t have a physical button – to try and prevent it from breaking… Contrary to what most think Apple wants to remove moving parts because they are just vulnerabilities. Their products have a reputation to be long lasting and intentionally making them break would do more harm than good for the company. After all they sell a user experience. But even with these improvements some are still bound to break…I’m glad we don’t have to deal with this problem on iPhone X and onwards is all I can say – so I guess Apple created a problem but has now fixed it – sort of. A screen replacement is now more expensive than ever 😂

  • Hi.. Just curious.. My son dropped my 7+/Iphone and broke the glass.. Worked fine for abt 4 months then display was gone for good.. Green and black lines appeared on the screen, nothing was working on it and then completely shut down .. I took it to a friend for repair but after 3 days he said he can’t do it. I took it to a service centre and the guy told me and showed me that cable was ripped from the button. Is been 2 weeks now and i my phone is still in service.. Does it last so long? And can the guys from service steal parts from inside phone? 🙁 thank u !

  • HI, there is now a Rev4 jc home button available. However, I got a home button from ebay earlier this year, it worked without bluetooth for a while. like Rev 4 JC button will do, without bluetooth, according to its seller on ebay. In my case, I used an update from apple, later after the install of h/button, Apple blocked the home button from working??? In conclusion, the Rev 4 JC button version doesn’t use bluetooth, according to its seller, so this should work fine, and be easier to install. With the exception of fingerprint id, the home button should work most of the other functions. In my view, Apple should not be allowed to block a third party repair of the home button or screen, as you who are the legal owner of the phone, and should have the legal right to take it to whome you like to get it repaired. Greedy as Apple are, they charge a whopping £154. 44 for a complete new screen and home button. Icould get a second user phone for that price, and have some change. Shame on you apple ripping customers off.

  • Hi hugh. I bought my self a used iphone 10, out of warranty, within days i saw that there was a battery issue where when i use face id lock the system would switch off . though the battery showed 95% health it would switch off and show 3% battery life. So i changed the battery for a few days everything worked fine then i noticed a single pink line on my left side of my screen. Googled it, said voltage problem. Few times i switched off and everything was fine but now its permanent. U have fixed so many phones u might know whats the problem with my phone. Please help

  • Hey I have a iPhone 5 it currently won’t power on or boot, it was working last time I used it, it is jail broken but needs a restoration the screen and top back glass are shattered it’s a 16 gig running iOS 10.3.3 please message back! I have no idea on where else to get ahold of you and the power button is faulty

  • i have a question so on my old iPhone 6s plus my brother attempted to fix it by replacing the battery,my power button my charging port and my screen. but when he fixed it my phone wouldn’t charge past 3% no matter how long it was on charge and it eventually died and it would just flash the power up screen when it was plugged up. and when we checked battery health it just said “-” what do you think is wrong with it?

  • Have you heard, recently Apple is being sued for not allowing other third party ways to download their apps in which are creating a monopoly!!! You think your example falls in the same category as only them allow parts to work with the devices in that way creating another monopoly that forces people to only get the parts with Apple and being overcharged for that part!!!!!! 🤔

  • I have an iPad that won’t charge unless it’s completely shut off, I looked up how to fix it but all I’ve seen is to clean the port which I have tried and it didn’t work. If possible do you think you could fix it, I ofc would pay for it, and I could also understand how it’s a tablet and not a phone, so you may not want to do it, but it would mean a lot to me if you could fix it, or if anyone in the comments could tell me possible solutions for it

  • Hugh I have a question I have a iPhone 7 that is water damaged but everything works but the loud speaker and the home button has Touch ID but does not go home and also the rapid engine does not work but I think one of the connectors are not working I also replaced the loudspeaker and the rapid engine but they still don’t work what do I do

  • You wait until the very end of the article to mention the biggest issue, which is that you can’t buy a new Touch ID enabled home button from a third party. Only Apple has that power. This is a workaround. Make a new article once you’ve defeated the Secure Enclave for Touch ID or Face ID and then this will be impressive.

  • I am quite confused about the practicality of bluetooth home button. I am pretty sure the home button replacement for iPhone 7 / 8 is available on eBay for quite some time now. Afaik, their functionality is pretty much the same as the original button (without touch ID), so why do you even need bluetooth home button after all?

  • Why can’t it not be a security feature to protect the customer think about it if it’s possible to purchase a home button and use it on a device is it possible to probably include malware or some sort of hack to break into someone’s phone just by replacing the home button with one of these Bluetooth type ones think about it.
