Is The Outside Windshield Glass Smooth Following A Qualified Repair?

The windshield should be seamless and smooth post-repair, and if the glass is distorted, wavy, or not flat, it indicates that the windshield is not properly repaired. The sealing adhesive tends to become translucent and blends with the windshield glass upon drying. Even after a perfect repair job, the area will appear slightly “scarred”, but the repair seals the glass and prevents the crack from spreading. No aftercare is necessary.

When your windshield faces a crack, it is crucial to make an informed decision about whether to DIY or call in windshield repair. Understanding the factors that influence windshield glass quality is paramount in making informed decisions about repairs and replacements.

Windshields are porous at a microscopic level, so clay can help unclog these pores by adding glass cleaner for lubrication and sliding the clay back and forth. However, even if you are highly skilled, windshields aren’t flat and can introduce non-zero amount of distortion. Tempering puts the outer surfaces into compression and the interior into tension, which causes the glass to shatter when broken.

After a windshield replacement, it is important to steer clear of certain actions to maintain the newly installed windshield’s integrity and longevity. A small amount of resin is injected into the injured area to fill any gaps, and a special abrasive pad buffs off the damaged layer of glass. A polishing pad is then used with a polishing compound to smooth the glass so that it is smooth.

The easiest method is to use an acrylic scratch remover, which fills the scratch cavity and dries hard. WD40, a water dispersant made from fish oil, is not likely to damage the glass, but it could be inquired with the manufacturer. Don’t risk your safety with DIY windshield repairs! Professional windshield repair ensures long-lasting results.

Are all replacement windshields the same quality?

Original Equipment Equivalent (OEE) windshields are often confused due to the assumption that they are all the same quality. However, there are many aftermarket manufacturers that create windshields to “equivalent” standards, which doesn’t mean they are all the same quality. Some aftermarket brands may be high quality and more expensive, while others may meet the minimum standards and be cheaper than OEM but not as safe or durable. All OEE windshields have basic safety protection, but it may be necessary to consult a professional to determine the best blend of quality and value.

A solid OEE windshield typically meets the quality of an OEM windshield but is significantly less expensive due to not having the manufacturer’s branding. If you’re unsure whether OEM or OEE is the right choice for your windshield repair needs, contact Only 1 Auto Glass for a timely consultation.

  • your buff towel after the clay bar, I know you were talking to us so probably didn’t even know, but you wiped off the clay lube, turned it over to buff dry, flipped the towel back to the clay lube side and wiped again. You then were about to refold the towel to a drier side, but didn’t and wiped more clay lube on 😂

  • I did followed this process recently. Works great for rain except I must have used an inferior microfiber to apply or buff the HydroSlick and now have lint stuck in coating on windshield. How do you recommend I remove the HydroSlick (without stripping wax from other exterior surfaces) to try again for a better application?

  • It’s crazy how much all these products cost honestly… I mean heck, I can get safelite to come put in a brand new windshield for 300 bucks, or spend 200+ on products and still have to do the work…. I dunno, just seems excessive to have to spend that much on glass when it’s probably cheaper to have the glass changed lol… Just my HO

  • Hi guys. Not long ago I put your Hydro Slick Wax on my car. I’m happy with final effect, but on my bonnet looks like loosing repellent effect. I don’t know I used stronger foam or what? Btw question-can I re-apply this wax again? Or really should wash away with for example fallout and then start again new layer? Tom

  • Glad i found this! I have a 56 chevy with old glass likely replaced in late 80s. I properly washed inside n outside, and og clay barred outside of glass Would this clear or at least help clear up for the most part any light and moderate pitting and sun hazing? And light scratches/streak from old windshield wiper blades? Thank you guys for always being helpful! Any suggestions are appreciated. ✌️

  • The best way to demonstrate glass polishing would be on an old windshield removed from a salvage car. You could light it well from the inside and outside to really show the effectiveness of the process. It’s almost impossible to tell how well this is working. Surprised that no windshield polishing articles have figured that out.
