Windshield chips can be costly repairs, but DIY windshield repair kits can offer an affordable alternative. These kits promise to fix your windshield at a fraction of the cost, as long as the damage isn’t too extensive and you follow the instructions properly. They can effectively fix minor chips and cracks to prevent them from spreading. Some of the best auto glass repair kits on the market include the Rain-X 600001, Permatex 09103, and Blue-Star Fix your Windshield 2 Repair Kits.
However, DIY windshield repair kits are almost always a complete waste of cash. They can be moderately effective for repairing small chips and cracks around 1 inch or less, while larger cracks require more expensive tools. Auto glass repair products can be just as successful at fixing chips as mobile windshield repairers use, and at a fraction of the cost.
Using a DIY repair kit on a small enough chip on your windshield will stop the crack from expanding but won’t remove the damage from your vehicle. DIY auto glass repair kits are a risky solution for minor windshield damage, but it’s important not to wait until the cracked surface is exposed to moisture or dust.
Questionable longevity is another concern with DIY windshield repair kits. Many repairs fail over time, and opening a DIY kit may cancel your car’s warranty. Additionally, the resin used in these kits hardens and prevents the damage from spreading.

Repair kits are temporary fixes for windshield chips or cracks, but they are not permanent fixes. They are an inexpensive “Band-Aid” that will eventually need replacement or repair. The initial cost is $10-15, but the long-term cost is higher. If your glass insurance covers the repair, you can schedule a windshield repair and have Auto Glass Express handle the insurance claim. All major insurance companies have approved us, and if you’re too busy to file the claim, all you need is your phone number.

How long do windshield repair kits last?
D. I. Y. kits can be effective in repairing small windshield chips, but they may use inferior quality resin. The longevity of these resins depends on the viscosity and the quality of the resin used. For most small breaks, these kits can hold the structural integrity of the glass for a few months to a few years. However, in emergencies, they can be lifesavers.
A professional windshield repair shop typically uses a stronger and higher quality resin, and if repaired properly, these windshield chip repairs can last the lifetime of your vehicle’s windshield. However, the success of these repairs depends on the expertise and skills of the technician. In some cases, the technician may not have removed enough air from the damaged area, added enough resin, or cured the resin with a UV light.
Air, moisture, and dirt are crucial factors in repairing a windshield successfully. The longer the chip has been exposed to outdoor elements, the harder it is to remove these factors. Therefore, it is essential to research before choosing a windshield repair shop.
Will windshield repair kit stop crack?
Windshield repair kits are a quick and convenient solution for fixing rock-cracked windshields. They fill the crack and prevent it from growing, but they provide minimal components and difficult-to-follow instructions. Once used, the stone chip cannot be repaired again, and the crack may spread if not completely filled. For best results and safety, it is essential to seek professional windshield repair or replacement as soon as possible.
Professionals have the tools and expertise to assess the damage, determine if a repair is sufficient or if a full replacement is necessary, and restore the windshield to its original strength. By choosing professional service, you are not only patching up the problem but also ensuring the windshield is structurally sound to protect you on the road.
Can you fix a cracked windshield without replacing it?
Cracked windshields can be repaired or replaced based on the size and location of the crack or chip. Chips smaller than a quarter and cracks less than a few inches are usually repairable, but deep or wide cracks may require replacement. Cracks away from the driver’s side can be addressed, but those in the driver’s line of sight could cause distortion and require replacement. Glassmakers recommend replacing a windshield with a crack that extends from an edge as these cracks spread quickly and easily.
A cracked windshield is weakened, making it less protected from future incidents. Assessing the damage is crucial, as it can obstruct the driver’s view and threaten the structural integrity of the car. Small cracks won’t significantly impact glass strength, but if the crack spiders across the windshield, has multiple cracks, or starts at the windshield’s edges, it should be repaired immediately.
The time it takes to replace a windshield varies, and it’s essential to have it done right by a certified technician. If you notice a crack, take it to an expert for further evaluation.
Why didn’t my windshield repair kit work?
Auto glass repair may not work if the resin did not properly cure or harden. It is recommended to keep the car out of rain, extreme temperatures, and off the road for about an hour after the repair. If a windshield has a crack or chip, it is essential to have the chip or cracked filled to prevent it from growing larger. If the chip or crack grows larger, the entire windshield may need to be replaced.
Some common reasons why auto glass repairs may fail include dirt or dust in the chip or crack, which can prevent the resin from fully adhering and bonding. It is impossible to remove dirt or dust from a chip or crack, as moisture can also cause issues. Having the chip or cracked filled promptly can prevent dirt and dust from building up in the crack. If the repair is not possible, placing clear packing tape over the crack can help prevent dirt and dust from building up.
Can I repair a cracked windscreen myself?

This guide provides information on windscreen damage and the law, allowing you to prevent or repair your car’s windscreen before it becomes a costly issue. Do home windscreen repair kits work?
Windshield repair kits are designed to address small damage to windshields, but they are not suitable for repairing extensive cracks or damage that impairs the driver’s line of sight. These kits fill the void with resin and let it harden to a glass-like consistency, aiming to prevent damage from spreading and fix blemishes in the glass. Each kit includes instructions, a tool for cleaning glass fragments, an injector tool for applying resin, and a film to cover the void as it cures. After the resin cures and excess is removed, a smooth, blemish-free windshield is achieved.
Does DIY windshield chip repair work?
While windshield repair kits can be an economical solution for minor damage, it is advisable to seek the expertise of NuVision Auto Glass professionals for more extensive or intricate repairs. The black dotted area on your windshield is of particular importance, as it must be addressed to guarantee optimal visibility and safe driving.
Can I fix a crack in my windshield myself?
Chips larger than a quarter and cracks over three inches long cannot be fixed with a DIY kit and should be replaced by a professional glass service like Glass Doctor. If the chip is smaller than a quarter, windshield chip repair can be done DIY. Purchase a windshield repair kit at a local auto parts store and check the expiration date of the epoxy resin. Clean the windshield area where the repair will take place, but avoid spraying glass cleaner directly onto the crack or chip. Instead, use rubbing alcohol on a microfiber cloth and remove any loose shards of glass using a pin or thumbtack.
📹 Rain-X Windshield Repair Kit – Does it work?
Rain-X Windshield Repair Kit – Does it work? My first time trying the Rain-X windshield repair kit. I repair a one inch star chip and …
Having been an automotive glass technician for over 15 years, I’ve fitted thousands of windscreens (windshields for our North American friends) and I can tell you before even starting, this will not work. For those saying it looked like it worked – it didn’t. All it did was dull the light refraction you could see in the crack which is why it looked like it “sealed up”, but it actually didn’t. Also, “repairing” the crack was pointless as once a crack has reached both sides of the screen, it has no where else to go anyway. Onto the chip repair, yes it is entirely possible to repair chips – again, I’ve done thousands of them. So I’ll watch to the end to see how that came out, as most chips are fully repairable, so it will be interesting to see how the cheap kits compare to the professional kits. (Top tip, apply a little polish to the surface of the glass when you go at it with a razor blade: it cuts down the horrible noise. ALWAYS hold the blade at 90° to the glass, and NEVER “cut” the resin off)
Hi Meg. It looks like one of the headlights on your truck might be out. Btw, I just recently discovered your website but now I’m hooked. You’re so awesome and I will say, I’m a perfectionist, too but because I am, I don’t trust myself to get the results that I expect when I do something. Your projects always turn out great and you’re an inspiration to me. You’re awesome Meg! Keep doing what you’re doing!
I carried the Car I am driving to the Auto Glass shop a few days after I purchased it because of two small spots almost like yours… Asked how much to replace the windshield he started laughing and said he had repaired it just last week….I have been driving it 3 years now. They are still the same…Now I know they can be repaired..
Wasn’t a bad result overall, those kits seem to work better on windscreen chips than cracks of any real length. Have to ask how did you manage to get a 70″ crack? Was it small and got bigger over time or has it always been that size? Can’t imagine what hit it to cause it to be that size if it was always quite a long crack.
Hello Meg. You should only drive this car to the workshop. The windshield is important for the structural rigidity of a car. In the worst case scenario, you risk the health of yourself or others. In Germany you would immediately be stopped by the police and you would not be allowed to drive it one meter until it was repaired. Even if a repair is expensive, it is no comparison to the value of your health.
That was fun!! I’m assuming insurance works differently in Canada from here in the UK… on the few occasions when I needed windshield repairs, the insurance paid out for a replacement. On one occasion (Renault Laguna II) I was expecting to have to either pay in full or at least a contribution because the laminate had gone blotchy between the the two layers of glass, but no! Didn’t cost me a penny, even though the car was 10 years old by then. Thanks again for today’s ‘Meg Fix’ – I really look forward to it every week!
I have two of the bullseye cracks on my truck. Me, being the cheap sob that I am; used a small bottle of clear gorilla glue that came with a need like nose piece. I prepped the glass like you did and slowly applied the glue. Nine months later and the cracks haven’t spread or chipped. My wife thinks I’m too cheap lol. Much Respect to you !
Wondering if the RainX, harder to scrape off, will last. I’m thinking the DIY might reappear and/or not hold as well. But what I love about your vids is like “Let’s try it out”. I’ve always wondered why they put limits on what they’ll fix. like who came up with that 12″ limit and why? I think it some lawyer somewhere.
Not sure if in Canada your auto insurance company has full windshield coverage available, but I always elect that coverage here in the States. Also, I recall your VW has a crack in the windshield. Did you try to repair that as well? How are you managing to get cracks in windshields of your vehicles? 🙂 All your articles are very informative and priceless!!! Best wishes always.
Must admit the DIY one did more than what I expected them to. But don’t think I’ve ever heard of anyone in uk repairing a crack that would be longer than just half the width of a windscreen. For the MOT (cars over three years old have a yearly inspection to make sure they are road worthy and safe)you are not allowed to have cracks longer than 10mm in line of the drivers vision and 40mm anywhere else. And seen someone get pulled by police for taking a car up for sale out for test drive but the price of the car was written in crayon across the screen in large numbers 😂. I’m shocked that a crack that large is allowed, I’d find that so distracting. Have you tried Rain X screen wash? Brought some recently and love how rain drops just bead and roll down screen, but if it’s light rain, you do get a little smearing for a few seconds.
i tired the Rain-X kit on my Honda Fit after getting hit by a gravel truck “gun shot” to my windshield . It was a good hit with small spider cracks surrounding a divot. The kit repaired the crack and divot but unfortunately when applying pressure to do the repair the laminated layers separated. What resulted was a floral pattern around the fixed crack. So, if your laminated windshield (all windshields are three layers – glass/plastic/glass) is compromised in any way better to leave the crack alone and see if it gets worse. Once the flower appeared I had no choice but to replace the windshield. William
Thank you very much for this demonstration and review!!! Always wondered if the windshield repair kits worked and were worth the money?! Now thanks to your honest review and application, we all know! Keep trying new things and pushing yourself in all areas of your life and know that we care and appreciate you!!!
I will be interested in seeing what happens when you have cold. I lived in very cold areas. The winter may cause a problem. In Montana we had to buy a new battery every other year but we didn’t have much snow latter I lived in Oregon and we had both snow and freezing fog. It may be fine or it may run into trouble in the winter. You did a great job.
lol, $4 is not really wayyyy cheaper, and curious why you would prefer to have the resin that is easier to break apart and wear down over time from the “budget” product? The Rain-X product is clearly a stronger resin per your experience, which will last longer and resist more future impact over time.
I didn’t even watch the article. I know it’s BS from the start. If you have any nationwide car insurance your front windshield is most likely covered for free replacement. I know if you have State Farm or Progressive Insurance it’s the case. Call the 800 number on your insurance card or call the agent direct. Don’t waist your time on DIY.
I got a new-to-me BMW 435 a few months back, less than 3 weeks into owning the car I got a rock chip in the windshield. I’ve debated doing something like this before it gets worse, seeing this article gave me the confidence that I can do it myself. Thanks, Meg! For once the YouTube algorithm did something helpful for me!
the things you take on! I was cringing at the rim project but it was great. going to disagree with kevparker, the goal isn’t to bring structural strength back but only to reduce the distraction (glare and flare from sun) to make driving safer and to stop spread. the windshield is two layers of tempered glass with plastic between to hold it together, its only the outer part that generally breaks. These kits could work so much better, the goal is to get fluid in the crack which is a challenge. for this type, putting packing tape on the outside to seal it, vacuum on one end of the crack and glue fed into the other end of the tape. I’ve had very successful repairs with every DIY kit. Brake cleaner could have delaminated the plastic, its really damaging to some surfaces. great job!
Great to see ya at work again! Just started the vid and paused for a moment to see if that headlight is going to be in an upcoming article. The projects are all around you. Simply love the website and your articles. Mostly love the premise they are both built on. With your curiosity and tenacity nothing is out of reach. Happy Saturday!
Happy Saturday everyone. In todays episode of Meg takes on the world she tackles the dreaded cracked windshield. Who hasn’t been there? Not sure about Canada but in the states its pretty common for this repair to be covered by insurance so this was very helpful for those who have wondered if they can repair it themselves. All in all I would said even though you could still slightly see the crack from the inside, not all was lost because the small void that is the crack is now sealed and should help to keep it from weakening further and spidering off into different directions. At least that’s my prediction and hopefully Meg will keep us updated. Also, was it just me or did anyone else notice the drivers side marker lamp wasn’t illuminated at time marker 45 when she pulled into the garage? Great article Meg, see you next week
There’s a trick. I saw a windshield repair guy use a match on the inside of the window after the equipment with the glue is already in place. You hold a match 1 inch away on the inside directly on the crack for 3 seconds, then pull it away for a second then three on then one off then three seconds a final time. What that does is heat up and expand the glass and as the glass cools off it yanks the glue deep into the cracks and hardens quickly. I’ve done this for lots of people, know you know the trick.
At first I thought his was going to be a poor quality article due to how simple the production quality is. Boy was a wrong this is an excellent article one of the best I have seen on YouTube nice job on this my concerns on if I could do this repair are gone. Also I almost rushed and did repair in the sun. You saved me a half job repair and hours.
Brought one of these kits here in the UK from my local Halfords car parts shop as I’d got a good size chip in my windscreen, followed the instructions and it worked brilliantly … Canon even see where the chip was even under cols examination . Have brought some more bottles of glass resin and a UV light ( as the chip had been cured in good sunlight but this cannot be guaranteed so got the light ) so any future chips or other people’s can be fixed .
Just wanted to thank you for your demonstration of using this product, I got peppered by a darn tracker trailer hauling gravel, apparently he was out revenge or something as several of my coworkers all got the same treatment within a week! Ok anyway, I watched your article, and then ordered this product, I had 3 lovely little chips that had not spread, after using this product,, I cannot even see where the chips where! 😊 I live in Montana, where we are very prone to rocks finding there way to our windshields,,,it’s kinda a joke when you have cracks and chips in your windshield that it’s a typical MT windshield. I am also a lady, so anyone remotely handy should be able to do this. Thanks again.
I just found out that my insurance covers these 100%. I have one little pock that could easily spread. 152 euro but insurance works directly with the glass place. Appointment this Saturday. They put a bandaid on it today. Finally, something that just goes right. This is already my third windshield. Its Saturday. Work is finished. It almost invisible and a pair of Bosch wipers for free. Insurance did it all. The repairman also took the time to show me how to remove the wiper arms to repaint them properly.
I used this kit to fill in a rock chip my truck had for years and idk why I ever waited. It practically filled everything in to the point I could not even tell it was there anymore. I had resin leftover and filled in 3 cracks on a work vehicle window and it worked great! I would highly recommend this kit for a cheap and easy fix. Im super OCD so anything in my field of vision bugs the heck out of me.
Didn’t work. Errant instructions say to repeat the wrong steps, and the cheap plastic suction cup legs broke off mid repair. I’m sure I got things too tight but that is what happens when the instructions aren’t accurate, and they don’t mention that tightening the pressure driver will also tighten the resign chamber more. It also didn’t help that they put the clear sheets inside the instructions so they fall and get dirty before you even start.
I’ve fixed a bad chip before and it held for years but that kit was nothing compared to this one. You can barely see where it was. I went ahead and filled in a bunch of really minor chips too. I cut the uv strips into 2′ and 4 pieces . Circled all the chips and put a drop on each. This will work better with 2 people. A helper will make it go easy. The one problem I had was that the suction cups came rotate backwards and the thing wouldnt screw in. then I realized i just had to flip it over. the plunger seated and no sealant came out. filled the hole instantly, My kit was not rainx, it was just like it on amazon.
You should of not been able to see the cracks at all once filled with resin. As a repair tech, I highly don’t recommend this brand at least I get what you’re trying to do so you feeling it will stop the runs but in reality it should also make the whole thing disappear once the resin is correctly in the cracks. Another point to remember is once this happened try to do this right away because once you put any kind of rain X or take it through a car washwater and dirt and debris gets in there. You’re gonna see little black specks once it is filled.
l just did it on some small round chips,it didn’t do much,I can’t see that it made it dissappear but maybe it got some stuff down in the crack.lts good to clean that chip out real good with something that remove any rain x or wax that’s gotten down in the hole before you do this.lts curing now…yours looks better than mine,it doesn’t look like it did anything.
