📹 10 HOME RENOVATION TIPS for DIYers & Beginners *What I Wish I Knew Before* | XO, MaCenna
After 4 months of owning a renovating a house ourselves, we have learned a few things along the way that I wish I knew before …
You did a wonderful job and are so inspiring! If you mentioned, I somehow missed it, but popcorn ceiling texture can contain asbestos (not always) and there are kits you can get to test before removal. If you plan on removing more in your home, please check a few spots first. You created a beautiful kitchen! I love all the texture and warmth.
I like that she unscrews the kitchen cabinets to take them down rather than swinging a sledge hammer. Taking them down like the way she did is so much more predictable and it would seem easier to collect the mess if you are going to throw them out. I also like how she cut lines into the floor so she could remove it flooring in sections.
Amazing!! I watched this project from the beginning and it was still a wonderful surprise to see the full reveal. Please don’t make me pick a “favorite feature”. This is so cohesive that it just needs to be appreciated in it’s entirety. You did an amazing job with this project. Also curious about how the fridge handle holds up, it would be great if it will stand the test of time, maybe revisit that later so we can see if it’s a “good idea/bad idea”. Give yourself a pat on the back and be proud of what you have made.
This is actually giving me the motivation to tackle our own kitchen refresh. There are some things I don’t want to touch since we live in an old condo with other units, but I can definitely get behind refinishing our cabinets and adding some floating shelves since my main complaint is aesthetics and storage. Thank you for sharing!
I absolutely love it. You did a brilliant job. I love the colour of the bottom kitchen cupboards, its gorgeous. I was looking recently at kitchen cupboards and was drawn to the colour of your cupboards, it was called Galway Green. I adore the flooring too. Its not your bog standard everyday looking kitchen, and to me this is what makes it very special. Well done !
You have really progressed a lot in your skills in a short amount time. This was a pretty complex project, and you saved yourself a bundle doing so much on your own, and you did a wonderful job. And I like the way you re-purpose and refinish. You show that you don’t need a lot of new stuff in a room to give it a major workover. You’re an inspiration!
This is really awesome, and I love the pottery from your sister. I have mixed feelings about upper shelves vs. upper cabinets. Our kitchen in Mpls seems to never have enough storage. But that hutch you made for the air fryer was the best idea that I might borrow. I’d love to tuck away my microwave, toaster and Vitamix in something like that. Well done!
Wow! What an incredible makeover! While I’m very impressed with your DIY skills and determination, your creative vision just astounds me. How on earth you could look at that ghastly pink cabineted kitchen and visualized this amazingly charming room just boggles my mind. And THEN make it a reality. Well done! I think re-purposing the book shelf was my favorite trick. Or perhaps the floating shelves.
Bottom line: there is a “design intelligence” here that is coupled with a strong sense of purposeful DIY that is simply unmatched by many people. I have redesigned my own kitchen remodel, built and/or repurposed some of the cabinets, moved appliances to new locations, changed piping, electrical, installed new recessed lighting, new moldings, new counters, and installed new flooring etc. I am quite “handy”. But, I don’t have the terrific design sensibilities that the Mrs. Woods possesses. THAT is what makes the whole package. Well done Mrs. Woods, we’ll done.
Hi Melissa, I recently came across your website and am thoroughly enjoying it. I recently bought a 100+ year old home and plan on doing a lot of the work myself. One thing you said about the built in cutting board? I have one too and just love it! I’m looking forward to perusal more of your articles before I tackle anything here.

I am in awe on the skill of this build, and the attention to detail! I would have used a faucet fixture that coordinated a little better with the pulls used throughout that have a less ornate and more angular look. I am obsessed with skylights too so I’d love to see a article on that if that’s something you’d consider!
Looks great! one tip I would give is, while the usage of the vertical drawer at the left side of the kitchen is always a good idea to fill up any left over space. However as wood “works and warps” I would suggest to not let the faceplate of the drawer reach the wall, but work with a “spacer” same as for the other drawers and cabinets, you have x-amount of margin left and right in order to not collide with anything else. Just having a few cm/inches of breathing room will mean the drawer will never end up scratching the wall ^^
As a manly man, any comment I add will come across as sounding condescending. I tread lightly because of our crazy new world, where anything an older straight White Christian man has to say will be cancelled by the “new culture”. Ma’am, you are an amazing woman. You put on your boots, and pull ‘em up by the straps every day you wake. I’d want my daughters to take after you. You are a role model beyond role models. Excellent work on that kitchen, and your personal touches far outweigh any conceptual thinking by your male counterpart, if he exists anywhere in this falling apart world. Job well done, young lady. Your full success is only one more idea away. God bless you and your endeavors.
Beautifully done! Our home has all the original, custom built kitchen cabinets of the 1960’s build. I absolutely love them, but also love the idea of taking down some of the upper cabinets for more light. We do have an area that could be converted into a nook with a storage bench…. so you have given me something to consider. Also – the green paint on the lowers was lovely!
Honey, I think I would marry you, OMG, (don’t tell hubby 🤫) I am shocked beyond belief you did this!! I suppose I loved the bench repurposing & the bookshelf turned into an upper the best! What I would change, well it’s so beautiful it does deserve a better fridge. Your so creative, you could probably figure out how to make it a built in with a box!
This turned out amazing and all the custom work you did is impressive. My only question is, i feel like no matter what you can always tell when something is painted. I absolutely loved the fridge, but i know if i did that, the paint marks would drive me crazy. Same with the cabinets. Is there a way to make it not look so “painted”?
Unimpressed with placement of the mini oven within the shelving unit – where is the ventilation clearance? – these small appliances push out a great deal of heat and the risk of fire is very great indeed. This applies to microwave ovens which require a generous space behind and around the appliance for heat and steam to escape which is why one never places a microwave oven in a closed pantry cabinet.
Top to bottom I think you did a great job, both design wise and build wise. I must say it was so refeshing to have you include a change you felt needed to be done, saying “I don’t always get it right” I don’t recall ever recall hearing a YouTuber saying that, appreicate the honesty. Nobody gets everything right all time, it was great of you to include that.
This is gorgeous!! Love the design, love the color palette and hardware, love the functional details of the pull-out pan rack and repurposed shelf. Seriously impressed at how you upcycled those upper cabinets into a banquet! This has such a cozy Euro feel to it. What I would do a little differently – continue that gorgeous concrete backsplash finish all the way up to the ceiling for added height and grandeur – add matching hardware to the front of the sink panel as a functional dishcloth bar – make the fridge the same color and finish as the cabinets for a built-in appliance effect
Well first, I did take down all of our cabinets and pulled up flooring and patched walls in our kitchen. We even installed flooring ourselves and painted. All installation was done by a contractor who lived across the street. I’m not as brave as you to do the install, close a wall, electrical, plumbing, pour countertops etc…. you are an amazing young woman and I think your kitchen looks beautiful.
What an inspiration you are! I’ve done some of these diys in our home but have been alittle hesitant to try the bigger projects. I know I can do it now since I’ve watched what you’ve accomplished 🙂. Thanks so much for sharing….your kitchen is absolutely gorgeous and I’m a new loyal subscriber now.
I’m curious what the total price of the materials and appliances for the remodelling was, it looks so luxurious. I am allergic to so many of those chemicals including the paint/stain so I wouldn’t be able to do that like you did (let alone lifting, cutting and knowing how to work all the equipment and so professionally). I love the wooden hutch and the shelves. I also love the hidden cutting board.
I think it looks pretty but it needs a dishwasher and more counter space which might be provided by an island which would also give you more storage space. I also think the lighting above the floating shelf would be better as hanging track lighting as it takes up wall space that might be used to lean a large serving platter or tray against it.
