What is the difference between an interior designer and a decorator?

Interior design and interior decorating are distinct concepts. Interior design is the art and science of understanding people’s behavior to create functional spaces within a building, while interior decorating is the furnishing or adorning of a space with decorative elements to achieve a certain aesthetic. Interior designers may decorate, but decorators do not design. The process follows a systematic and coordinated methodology, including research, analysis, and knowledge integration, to satisfy the needs and resources of the client. They must respond to the building shell, physical location, and social context of the project to create spaces that improve the experiences of the occupants.

They may use drafted drawings, presentations, 3D renderings, and mood boards to help clients prioritize their needs.

Interior designers can also purchase furniture items, organize orders, deliveries, and installation, and coordinate with contractors and fabricators for larger renovation projects. Understanding the different levels of service offered by interior designers can help determine the right choice for your project.

An interior designer’s hourly rate ranges from £50 to £150, depending on their expertise and pricing structures. Additional costs like professional tradespeople or new furniture and materials should be considered. Planning potential costs before contacting an interior designer is crucial to determine what to splurge on and save on. What is a reasonable budget for interior design?

What is a reasonable budget for interior design?

The cost of a home renovation or furnishings depends on the overall value of the home. A general rule of thumb is to allocate 7-10% of the home’s value for interior design expenses, with a focus on “Mid-Range” products. For “Designer” level finishes, budget around 25% of the home’s overall value. For example, for a $2 million home, a budget of $500, 000+ would be appropriate for decorating and designing the entire house at the “Designer” level.

However, it’s important to note that these prices do not include home renovation expenses, such as construction. Clients often add features or upgrade finishes as the design process progresses, increasing the scope and cost of the budget. To avoid unexpected overages or disappointed expectations, clients should add about 20 to their initial budget estimate. This will leave wiggle room for upgrades and allow for more accurate financial expectations.

Interior designers are professionals who can save homeowners money by providing a professional touch to their home design projects. For example, if a client budgets $500, 000 and adds 20, they’ll end up with an estimated budget of $600K, leaving plenty of room for any changes or upgrades.

  • I’m shocked when Heather mentioned on her website that she was going to be on Watch what happens live! She has mentioned over the years that Andy has a problem with her and won’t invite her on his show, she says she doesn’t know why, but he won’t acknowledge her at all! So I think he wanted Jeff on and Jeff is good friends with Heather and that’s the pull she got to being asked on, cause Andy totally brushes her off ! 🤷‍♀️

  • Very disrespectful that they both kept cutting Heather off when she tried to speak. This segment pretty much gave all of the camera time to Jeff Lewis. Heather McDonald is more than a Bravo superfan. She is a seasoned tv comedian and has a very successful online podcast, Juicy Scoop. Andy, do better next time and show some respect to your female guests.

  • This was filmed at @ 2pm not live show (did they even have an audience, could hear the echo)……………that probably took out some of the excitement being a pretape and no alcohol flowing. He needed to get out with his friend Bruce Bozzi last night……..need to change the name of Watch What Happens Live with the more and more pretapes……kind of like Live with Kelly and Mark…..these shows arent too often live! Heather didnt seem super relaxed…………..

  • Isn’t this his brand?? Just a bit disinterested? I think all interviewers should give the question like you give a sh!t but appear and be disinterested in the response. Especially during celebrity interviews. You should be like, “I see…” then get right to the next question, until they say something headline grabbing…then, lean in!
