Nice comparison. I’m glad you tried the cotton/poly blend. Normally they are too warm for me, but I have old sheets that are ridiculously soft that are a cotton/poly blend. For winter, I sleep on the cotton hotel style sheets from Walmart. They’re soft and warm. But the rest of the year, I prefer 200 thread count percale or linen sheets. Linen feels heavier but is the coolest for sleeping. I prefer it over cotton. Linen changed my life.
I put the top sheet upside down for it to look neater when you fold it back. Interesting that my husband likes the crispy feeling of starchy linen. It just seemed more breathable on him and cooler. When we moved,new bed is a king,, still using those wrinkly sheets. They are crispy and feel fresher. They will need time to be broken in,to get softer. Love your warmth…
Four or five years ago Target carried Fieldcrest sheets that were amazing. They had the most luxurious feel and had two rows of elastic on each corner of the fitted sheets. It broke my heart when they stopped carrying those sheets. I’ve bought Boll & Branch and other sheets since then but none of them compare to the Fieldcrest.
I am one of the pickiest people about sheets!! I’ve bought 150.-200 dollar sheets. Once I found the 100% cotton sheets (hotel style brand) from Walmart I’ll not go back to anything else. I love crisp, 100% cotton sheets on my bed like the ones I slept on as a child. Three count depends on how thick the thread is while weaving the cloth. I can pick up two identical sheets with the same thread count and one will be heavier. The polyester is basically plastic kind of a sticky feel and always pills after time. and non absorbent and cotton wicks and is absorbent. Just gets better after time. Way better on your skin. Shame on Walmart for hiding their inferior fabric.
Good article – I’m with Jason! I’m guessing that over time the poly blend sheets may pill and get a little bumpy. Also, I like 100% cotton because I think cotton breathes better than polyblend. I do try to fold my sheets and pillowcases as soon as they are dry, and that seems to cut down on the wrinkles. (It also does not give the cats a chance to get into the laundry basket and sleep there!)
I normally put my sheets on wrong side up so when I turn down it looks pretty. I just got some new sheets at Costco that were on display at entrance and really inexpensive so I couldn’t resist. I bought one set, as they were 100% polyester microfiber and I prefer 100% cotton. To my surprise, they are my favorite sheets. Washed twice so far and no problems. We’ll have to see how they hold up.
I have found some amazing sheets at Tuesday Morning, but even though they were deeply discounted, they were around $200. This would put them out of the price range for many people. They have lasted forever and only got better with age. They were a very good investment. It might be something worth saving up for.
I like very high thread count cotton sheets. They get softer and softer over time. I don’t like having a polyester component. The fact that you had to look at smaller print to find out the actual material in the Walmart sheets seems like cheating. The front should have said polyester/cotton, particularly since there was a high percentage of polyester.

Hubby and I dislike soft, ‘no-body’ sheets and every time I’ve bought sateen sheets they end up pilling. I always put my sheets on so they are right-sides together. From perusal you put the Target sheets on the bed it looked like maybe they shrank a bit in the wash…seemed really tight to the mattress. I put mime on the same way you do. I usually go for 100% cotton. I hate the sheets that end up with the little “fuzz balls” don’t know what else to call them and usually after several washing is when they get them. The last sheets I bought were from Kohls dept store big one brand i believe. and we love them. I believe they were micro fiber 600 count and very reasonable! Very soft and still holding up nicely. Yes I too always put them on like you do, where the printed side shows when you flip over making the bed. My mom worked at Gimbels dept store bed and bath dept and taught me to put them on that way when I was a teenager! Lol Great article!
I love Target Simply Shabby Chic sheets and comforter sets. The fitted sheets have elastic around the entire sheet, have deep pockets, and come in a lower thread count. The fabric is soft and the accent trim is pretty and feminine. They are costly but they go with my style. For winter, I like Martha Stewart’s flannel sheet sets through Macy’s. Great quality, pretty choices, great price when on sale, and warm & cozy. I make the bed with the patterns facing each other so that when I fold the top sheet over, it’s pretty side up.
We only buy 100 percent organic cotton now….. after researching polyester found that is plastic…which can be toxic to our bodies gassing off as we sleep…so we try to go with the more natural approach….i thought your point with the linen sheets becoming better and softer with time made a lot of since…I believe the cotton will get better over time too …. thanks for sharing 🙂 fun article
The Target sheets are probably a short staple cotton. If you want nice and smooth look for long staple Egyptian cotton. I use Wal .mart sheets and they’re perfectly acceptable. Years ago I had some swiss cotton sheets from Land’s end but I don’t think they sell them anymore. They were dreamy soft and smooth. Also years ago I had some wonderful Fieldcrest Charisma sheets that felt like silk but were fine combed cotton. Most of the sheets now are made in India and just not as nice as sheets used to be. I have heard goof things about the sheets from LL Bean. I may try them when my Wal Mart sheets are shot.
Cotton poly blend used to be popular in the 70’s and 80’s. They don’t wrinkle and prints are longer lasting and easier to do on cotton poly blend. They are usually not as cool as 100% cotton as they don’t breathe as well. I have always put my sheets on they way you do with the “right” side on the inside where your skin touches. I know you didn’t mean it as such but gyped is a slur against Romani(gypsies)peoples
I loveJC Penney’s . I find there queen size sheet affordable soft many colors to choose from. My husband is oily all over and I find them easier to wash that out and the color doesnt run. And most of all when we do sweat they hold up best. I change our sheets every three to four days. I think I will spring for linen next time I buy sheets, just to see. I have a lot of negative thoughts on modern sheets, first that 100% cotton is not necessarily better. Two, these ginormous sheets must be adapted one way or another to keep them from bagging, there has got to be a way to engineer to solve this, maybe some tucks at each corner that can be released to fit. I put the top sheet upside down so the smooth side is down, and the pretty side showing when folded down. I also sewed elastic across the corners of the bottom sheets to hold with some success. Now to the thing that I really dislike…most sheets I have bought in the past 20 years, regardless of the price point, come out of the dryer with the top bands all wonky. I am not obsessive about many things, but I hate it. I always end up ironing the tops, which I don’t really mind, I like to iron, it is very meditative for me. But I shouldn’t have to, when I was a kid in the seventies the sheets did great, even on a clothesline. I am glad to see some prints coming back, I like patterned sheets.
Frankly, My Pillow sheets by Mike Lindell are the best on the market. Hubby bled on them, his legs, we washed them without bleach, just used Clorox stain remover, the stains came right out, plus they are the absolute softest I’ve ever slept on including at a ritzy hotel bedroom using their sheets! They are not cheap, but get them on sale for buy one get one free and it’s the best deal around! I have had my sheets for 4 years now, they still look and feel like new!
My mum always had the ” jersey ” t-shirt sheets. It’s like sleeping in a tshirt. Very soft and cozy for winter. I’m living with my mum as she journeys through Alzheimer’s. I was always taught right sides together for bed making. Then you pull the pretty side over the blankets. I’m guilty of only using a bottom sheet and then a very cozy thin minke blanket that I’ll wash with my bottom sheet and a duvet for warmth.

I live in Georgia, and wouldn’t buy sheets that have polyester in them I’d be very put out with some being marked 100% cotton only to discover they contained polyester. Too warm a fabric. I had been buying a brand from QVC, but recently returned a pair that turned out to be extremely thin, not the usual quality. So, I’m keeping my eyes open for what I want, cool, crisp, all cotton. However, even in our short winter I switch to flannel.
Really enjoy these comparison articles. Never buy sheets that are not 100% cotton or linen. The poly blends do not wrinkle a much but I do not like the feel. Cotton is crisp when you first start using them sometimes but soften with wear and wash. I have a beautiful set of king size sheets that I purchased from Tuesday Morning more than ten years ago. They are 100% cotton. I don’t remember the thread count. They were made by Peacock Alley. They are still, after all these years the sofest, most luxurious sheets ever. I paid one hundred dollars for two king sheets and two king pillow covers. They originally retailed for several hundred dollars. Don’t remember exactly. Even at full price, they would have been worth it!!
New sheets, whether washed or not, are always going to have a certain about of dress starch on them, so I think they need more than one wash, or a good long wash. I think it is very hard to find a 100% cotton sheet that doesn’t need ironing especially when tumble dried! And I am with you, patterned side must be seen when turned back, and also the sheet has to be put on upside down so the pattern runs true when turned back, hope that makes sense, I watch a lot of Mum’s turn their kiddies sheets back and the tractor, dinosaur or unicorn are upside down 😂, drives me crazy! Although with a duvet, I rarely use a top sheet, in the summer with a lightweight padded throw or eiderdown I do. Most important for me is a cool cotton pillowcase!

I love laying in a freshly made bed with clean fresh smelling sheets. I really need to step up my sheet game though. I did buy some Amazon satin sheets that I love but they are starting to peel they were my first try with Satin. I think I will get Satin again because I dont like my pj’s twisting around which satin helps with that but much higher quality ones next time.

Like you, I also put the flat sheet on pattern side down, I also do that with my solid colored sets because the stitching is sometimes different. I tend to look for sheets at Homegoods/Marshalls. I hate paying full price for anything and those stores get such good quality sheets. Target used to have such pretty floral shabby chic sheets, but now they are quite dull in comparison. I like that Target and Walmart had the 2 sets of pillow cases!! That is a huge bonus
Honestly the best SOFTEST sheets right out of the package are from Target but they aren’t the Threshold brand you purchased. They are called Room Essentials microfiber set. They come in white and various colors. I have tried ALOT of sheet sets and I have to have soft breathable sheets. I get hot at night but not with these. They aren’t thick they are thinner but they are super soft and feel dreamy. Love them so much had to buy sets for our our bedrooms. I bought a new set recently from Sams Hotel Collection because someone suggested them to me. They are too thick and too perma press for me. I gave them away. Still like my Room Essentials Microfiber set from Target.
An interesting comparison. I may have missed something, but it’s hardly a fair comparison to rate one higher for fewer wrinkles when you removed that one from the dryer right away but left the other in the dryer for a day…or took them out at the same time but stuffed them in a laundry basket rather than folding. My preference is for the second Target purchase because, the same as you, I love that extra texture. But being a very simple person, I think one can go overboard on texture and the Pottery Barn looked too plush. Having said that, I have no problems with it (other than the price), just not for me. Also, I think the first Target one would be perfect for spring/summer too because of the colour. I will tell you from experience when we lost everything in a tornado in 2013. I had a LOT of things to replace. I bought some from Pottery Barn and some from Target. All of my Target items were straight and good quality. Everything I bought from Pottery Barn was wonky or damaged when it arrived. Haven’t bought a single item from them since. Even on sale. I was so disappointed in their products overall.
Where did you get the insert for duvet and I know many just use duvet on top but the one you have must have been reasonable. A nice quilt could also be used under comforter. Any suggestions? I need and want to redo my bed and get the walls painted. We are at the age have to hire for some things. I would need art but it would need to be framed. I have a large print over my bed now. My bed is a poster style. It’s very pretty. Quilted is the new way but will never have one because of age and what I have is nice. Love your decorations and your website. It has been so long since I had a new comforter could buy the pottery barn one. I need everything. I completely redecorated a room two years back and bedroom was next. It gets harder being older. I really didn’t like anything about the PB set. The quilting way to busy with your headboard tufting, #2 was a yawn. But #3 was the happy medium. The quilting going across the bed kind of fooled the eye into making your bed look like a king size on camera, and gave a modern up to date look that I didn’t see in the others! The last one from Target of course. The set from Pottery Barn is not an investment. It is a splurge. It will not hold value or increase in value, and be just as prone to staining and snagging as the one from Target. A better investment would be to buy the more economical options and use the money saved to either pay down debt or put into an actual investment fund.
I have always bought the most expensive bedding I could. Including for my children. When my daughter was in 4th grade she wanted 500 thread count twin sheets for her bed. For Christmas! I found them, Peacock Alley carried twin sheets. I usually purchase all my bedding at Dillards. Croscill is my favorite. And Noble Excellence. I know I wouldn’t be happy with less expensive options. My last set was 18 years ago and lasted forever. I just didn’t want anything so masculine for my next set. Less expensive is ok for younger people but not me. I personally prefer Dillards over Pottery Barn.
Excluding the price I definitely love the Pottery Barn one best. I like the color better and I think it looks more expensive. It should because it definitely is! My second choice is the second Target option. It looks very nice but not as nice as Pottery Barn. I have bought both Pottery Barn and Target bedding and the Pottery Barn was more generously sized. The Target was a bit skimpy on length and width. I did end up with Pottery Barn but sure didn’t love the price.

The Pottery Barn set is beautiful; but at that price, I’d feel like it was a “lifetime” purchase! One thing I would ask is what about the drop on the sides? Sometimes I have found (with my king-sized bed) is that the drop on the sides is too short. I hope that velvet one at Target comes in blue ‘cause I’m ordering it! ❤
I bought the Target bedding months ago. It’s ok. I have a king bed and it doesn’t fit right and if I don’t smooth my sheets and blanket, you can see, from how thin it is, that things aren’t smoothed. I am going to buy the Pottery Barn bedding now. Hear me out…..I have a Pottery Barn coverlet and shams. I have had it for at least 10 years. I also wash and dry it at least once a year (it’s white). I love the Pottery Barn set, except the price. The color and texture make it look high end. #3 From Target is fine and looks great. If you’re someone who likes to change their bedding often, Target makes this more affordable. It really boils down to personal taste and budget. Great job showing the options!
Leslie, I believe you nailed it with the last one, it looks gorgeous. I always bought Pottery Barn in the past, every pillow and blanket in my home were from Pottery Barn and then I would order stuff online from them and it was always on back order and recently, I noticed their Customer Service was not very nice and so I just started shopping Target because they have such a beautiful selection. Don’t get me wrong, Pottery Barn has beautiful things but when you can save that kind of money and get the same look, it’s a no brainer. I love when you do these article’s. I have a similar quilt from West Elm (same company) and the stitching started coming undone after one wash. So upsetting! My Pottery Barn sheets got holes in them somehow in less than a year (washing weekly but multiple sets) but my Kohls sheets are still going strong after ten years… that being said I’ve loved every duvet cover I’ve ever gotten at Pottery Barn!
Leslie I was curious if the Queen quilt would cover a king size. I have what I guess might be a platform with a would frame coming up pretty high. I have usually bought the Queen as I don’t like the quilt or comforter to cover the beautiful wood side of bed. Plus its hard to tucked in on bottom as it comes up too. Thanks
Thanks for your attentive comparison. Most of the time, I tend to prefer the Pottery Barn selections. This time, I prefer the Target version #3 actually. I don’t like the segmented look of the Pottery Barn quilt. You really nailed it with the third one. The shams and pillows are comparatively spot on.
I loved the color of the Pottery Barn one best but the quilting on the third Target one was a perfect amount for me. I would not pay the Pottery Barn prices so would purchase the third Target set. I have a cream colored quilt from Target that is similar to that one that I’ve had for years and it’s held up pretty well. Thanks so much for these comparisons.
I love the color of the PB one, but that last one looks very nice, too! For the cost I would 💯 go with that last one! The texture was very important as well which is why I did not care for the second one. Editing to add- When I saw the thumb nail with the PB one, I actually prefer the Target one at the end.
You did a great job with the comparisons, but for me the pottery barn is Absolutely so richer looking but the price and for me the third one came the closest too pottery barn, but if I had to chose the pottery barn one can stay for the next season(Christmas) where the third option is to light green in my opinion. Love the sets but the problem I have is that none of these sets come with the correct size shams. It is a shame that Pottery Barn’s quilt only comes with a standard sham when you have a king bed set. I use king size shams, and I keep looking until I fine what I am looking far. I have noticed that a lot of companies are doing that, not good at all. You do a great job with the comparisons.
I actually thought the PB set had “too much texture” when combined with the buttons on the headboard. The first Target one would have been find to me, but when you had the third option, I must agree that it is perfect. I have a lot of that green color throughout my house, and I loved the navy with the green. Thanks for the inspiration!
I love the quilted Target color better than the gray green of the Pottery Barn and I would feel 100x better with that price point!! I LOVE ❤❤❤your comparison articles and I especially love when you do the comparisons without telling us until the end because I love to see which I like best without bias and try to guess the highest priced one.
I have a lot of pottery barn bedding, but I also absolutely love CasaLuna from target. I actually have the last quilt that you showed and I picked it up brand new from the Goodwill for $20. I have a pottery barn outlet not too far from my house. I haven’t purchased bedding there in probably 5 to 6 years but back in the day they would run some really good sales on the bedding.
I love green, so I liked all 3 sets. But, I could not pay the price for the Pottery Barn set. And I feel that the patterned quilting in the set from Pottery Barn competes with the tufted headboard. I like both sets from Target, but if you desire more texture, the 2nd Target set is the one!! The price is right and I love the blue/green patterned pillow. It was very smart of you to explore all your options. 😊
The Pottery Barn was more beautiful but really expensive and even if you take it off at night, my cat would be sleeping on it during the day. The first one from Target just didn’t have enough wow factor. The second one from Target was definitely better. If you want an investment piece that you would use for a long time, like 7 years, I would go with the Pottery Barn set. If you know you like to change up every couple of years, I would go with the second Target one.
If cost was a major issue, Target version 2 would be a perfect choice although the Pottery Barn set did look more luxurious. I am desperately looking for new bedding but every time I think I have found something I can live with, it doesn’t come with a bed skirt and I need that since I don’t have a pretty frame. The current set has a pleated bed skirt that I made from two curtain panels that matched the comforter perfectly (such luck) and while it turned out really well I found it a lot of work and don’t really want to go through that again. I don’t have Target here so I can’t even go looking there. I guess I just need to keep looking.
I think the second one you found at Target is definitely the best one. Of course I Loved the one from PotteryBarn, but for the difference in price I would definitely go with the Target. In fact I am looking for the same green bedding. Now if I can find it in one of the Target stores here. Thanks for the article I enjoyed it.
