  • Engine brake and retarder are two different systems. The retarder is fitted to the transmission output shaft. The engine brake, does not change any gears. It shuts of the fuel supply to some of the cylinders, turning a portion of the engine into a compressor. That is why the sound changes to varying degrees when the engine brake is activated. The higher the setting, the more cylinders that are being used to brake, 1, 2, or 3, in the case of a 6 cylinder engine. With a retarder, there is a flywheel of sorts fitted to the drive shaft, and an electro magnet is use to ‘push back’ on the shaft rotation. When using the retarder in ETS2. You will hear a whine as it is activated. The engine brake, is called a ‘Jake’ brake by most North American drivers. And it’s annoying when some jerk going by my house, on a flat road, things it’s cool to have it barking as he comes to the light!😡

  • Another keybind option that good to know is Cruise Control Resume. With this option activated with a keybind, if you’re driving at a certain speed and have to show down or stop all of a sudden, when speeding up again and the speed limit crosses 30 km/h or mph and you activate that keybind, the Cruise Control Resume will take you back up to the speed you had before slowing down.

  • I also use keyboard and mouse while playing this and the most groundbreaking thing that i’ve discovered is that you can bind the gear up and gear down to the scroll on the mouse, it’s like playing in a automatic but you have more control. And I put bind the indicators to the left and right mouse buttons because it’s way more comfortable and I have more keys to bind to.

  • I use Cruise control adjust all the time 🙂 I’ve set it by 5km/h, that way you can easily slow or speed up when entering/leaving the city, construction site etc. If you have automatic retarder or engine brake allowed in the setting, it slows down with one of those option – for example in Quick jobs truck usually don’t have retarder. When you ajust the speed down while having Cruise control on, it breaks with Engine brake automatically 🙂

  • For the people who can’t find the Cruise control display on certain trucks, you can also change the menu information in the center display (handle), by going in settings and changing the ‘Dashboard Display Mode’ (it’s below Cruise Control resume). I couldn’t find in my new scania that display of the CC which left me very dissapointed, and then I learned you can switch between information with that setting lmao

  • That’s what we call engaging the Jake Brake man.. i just assigned it to 1 button to turn on an off when i hold that one button. Not increase or decrease. Just on off one. Above those.. I also recommend cruise control as well. Easy to speed when not paying attention. I’m new to all the sim games an I bought a steering wheel and what not to make it more gooder. Well it did. My question is. Do you have to buy cabin features to activate them ? Like you know on Flight Sim you have the mouse cursor to move about the cabin to click on knobs an what not. Well can you do that on ets2 and ats ? Or naw ? I set up a dual screen and found the fastest way to do that was open nvidia and it has a blue faq on left that asks to set up dual monitors and the rest is click thru to expand the screens to surround. Opposed to doing it by code way. Different strokes different folks ? Buy yea lol can you activate cabin buttons with cursor some how is my question ? Thanks for your article. Liked an sub.

  • G’day Milan, Thanks for the articles, yeah these features are really useful, looking through the Key Settings there are some great features that are not active standard. I play using a Logitech Momo Wheel that I got for $0.99AUD a few years ago, for all players that haven’t got one I would recommend keeping an eye out for a used wheel set at a reasonable price as it is so much better than just Keyboard + Mouse & even Game Controller

  • I’m one of those who don’t have steering wheel, so I’m using keyboard for driving and mouse for viewing. I have gaming mouse, therefore two buttons on its side are turn signals. Then left mouse button is for zoom, right mouse button is engine brake, scrolling mouse wheel is for retarder and middle mouse button (press wheel) is for resetting my view. Maybe someone will find this helpful 😁

  • Engine braking uses a diffirent timing for the exhaust camshaft to open exhaust valves when the piston reaches top dead center twice so the piston compresses air and disables fuel entering the cylinder so the engine is basically compressing air and letting it away to lose rotational speed and energy in gear to slowdown the truck

  • SCS Software, it’s time to hire them to work with standard truck sounds. Personally, for me this version is not something special and not essential, for me this version just changes the number to 1.46. This is of course my opinion, but for me this version, there is nothing special and game-changing for the better. I hope in the future to see the improvement of the standard sounds of the engines. At the moment they sound like broken vacuum cleaners, I have in mind the standard sounds of SCS Software.
