I quit Amazon 15 years ago. Never will go back and in fact do not buy from Amazon. I don’t sell clothes, modern toys, or other market flooded categories. On my personal webstore, I have got to make time to learn how to drive more traffic or find a legitimately good ecommerce marketing company. I would LOVE to make as many sales on my webstore as I do on any platform. The 3rd party platforms have gotten extremely greedy and could care less about the sellers…all while charging ridiculous fees, almost no support and fostering scammers in alarmingly growing multitudes (I honestly believe a lot of Amz employees are in on the scams/thieving too)!
Does anyone actually buy from the 3rd party sellers on Walmart? I personally avoid them because they are significantly overpriced, also charge shipping and there are a lot of counterfeit products. I bought a Neutrogena product that I always buy from Walmart and somehow I mistakenly bought from a 3rd party and when it arrived I instantly knew it was fake. I can’t believe Walmart allows the Chinese knockoffs as that is not only dangerous but also loses the buyers trust.
I tried Amz FBA for a while. Just know it is likely just a matter of time before they hold your inventory hostage for some unfound claim or simply destroy it…oh and then suddenly they are on the same listings selling the items directly, when you are the private label brand owner. So how are they suddenly selling your branded items…thieving maybe??? It is truly a good place to make more money than on some other platforms. Just go into it with your eyes open and read about what other sellers are currently going through to help assist you.
I have a small business where I make my own goods and sell on both eBay and Amazon. My sales with Amazon is roughly twice but I enjoy getting the sales through eBay more. Amazon customers can be demanding and returns are more common. Seller support with Amazon huh? eBay has far greater seller support and they have a program for international shipping which the others don’t. I have gotten several orders through eBay through International shipping and all I do is ship to eBay’s shipping center and not have to worry about International rates and tariffs. Listing on eBay is easier than Amazon. Getting paid is another big deal, never once had any problems with eBay and you have options. Amazon every two weeks and there has been times when that was skipped be cause of some glitch.
I appreciate your article, but let’s not kid ourselves, there are some negatives to a few places you mentioned. Bonanza does no marketing at all, in fact they would much rather you do social media advertising on your own and this does not work for people who do not use social media. Facebook marketplace is only good for flipping furniture locally and sourcing. After that, it’s full of scammers. Amazon FBA favors big sellers and is not friendly to small sellers. I guess the best thing about them is that they take care of all returns and other customer problems.
Nope. Almost none of these places are better for the sellers. They all charge high fees and make it extremely difficult for the sellers to make any real money. Shopify is a good place for an online shop, but then you spend twice as much time driving customers to it. All these online market places have gotten away from supporting their sellers and only into making money for themselves.

Not accurate: A) Amazon’s large sales difference is made up of their branded items, and streaming services. As Ebay only has branded shipping supplies and a few other things and no streaming services. HUGE difference!! B) Public sourced information on Amazon’s customers are ALL registered (active and not active) including streaming. Ebay’s quarterly users report is based on listing/selling and buying activity of anything during that quarter. That’s like saying “I have 1 Million dollars… I mean if you add up all the records over the past XYZ years, then yeah. Opposing to what you currently have over a 3 month period. First of all we just went through a pandemic. There’s a horrific economic collapse and now inflation among other terrible things. How the hell are we supposed to survive financially with an app that takes three weeks to a month to get paid. I don’t like the idea of sending my valuable stuff off to a buyer that gets to keep it for a month before we get paid that is beyond screwed up. I said we all been together and file a massive nationwide class action lawsuit against eBay for making the economy worse.

Gahhh.. I have been an Amazon seller for 22 years.. They do not care about their sellers.. The policies are very restrictive, and they come out with new rules every few weeks. Bots are everywhere and charge sellers with policy violations all the time. Sometimes warranted,, sometimes not. On top of that,, you are advocating for FBA.. That is crazy. Once you send your product to an FBA warehouse,, not only does it take weeks or months to get checked in,, they lose inventory all of the time.. Back to the policy violations,,, If you have inventory in an Amazon warehouse,, when a policy violation occurs and you are deactivated, they refuse to pay you or give your inventory back, AND sell off your stolen inventory with “Warehouse Deals”.. or liquidate YOUR inventory by the truckload.. NEVER go FBA.. Seller services are out of India and they just read from a script.. You could be talking to a wall.. Amazon used to be a good place to sell,, and I still do all FBM (fullfilllment by merchant) only.. They take 15 percent of the sales price AND 15 percent of your shipping.. Pro seller account is an additional 39 bucks a month. If you have a warehouse in California,, the state is sending HUGE tax bills. Also California has restrictions on items.. California Energy Commission (CEC). Sellers of these products must also register them in the Modernized Appliance Efficiency Database (MAEDBS)… CEC registration requirements for lighting products, pool products and portable spa products, portable air conditioners, computers, and monitors.
After ebay got rid of PayPal they started initiating returns without our permission than taking MORE money from us than we received from the sale. I don’t know about other sellers but i can’t afford getting paid 69.00 for an item than getting charged 85.00 for the return, than spending an hour getting the run around on the phone. That’s a 15 dollar loss and an hour of wasted time. I imagine that either the big sellers just have to let it go because they don’t have time to deal with it or ebay is discriminating against small seller’s by making it miserable enough that they just leave. Ebay must be raking in a pretty extra penny. Imagine if they only skimmed 16 dollars a month from every seller and half of it goes ignored because no one has time to fight with the customer service bot about it. Mercari and postmark are nice for small sellers too.
eBay seller experience (especially new seller) is TRASH. I spent almost 3 weeks with these clowns trying to list my first item. And after those 3 weeks? Still nothing and customer service want my social security number, my life plans, etc. No joke they asked me how many items a month Im going to sell, why, etc. The hell if I know? Why do you need this info for me to sell a $20 kids toy? I went on Mercari and listed my first item in less than 2 minutes. Never looking back, ebay is a dead platform.

Ebay is horrible. I’ve been selling for years and during Covid shipping was delayed. They took money from my account and never gave it back despite me having evidence of it arriving at it’s destination. Eventually I got suspended and they never gave me a clear reason why. They told me they cannot tell me for privacy reasons. Classic big corporations ruining individuals lives just because they don’t want to invest the time and effort to help you out. You are all replaceable and for them it’s easier/cheaper not to have you as a customer instead of helping you out.
Have been dealing with ebay years now. 100 percent rating. I recently purchased an item. Made the payment immediately. Never received the item. You can clearly see on the sellers part that they never shipped it. Ebay did absolutely nothing to resolve this.We had to file a complaint to our bank to try to resolve this. When you have your own brand… if a buyer sues. It’s the brand owner that has to deal with it. If you sell all kind of brands your chances of getting sued are less… Do I get this right? If I go to Walmart and buy something and that thing gets me hurt… I will sue the brand… not Walmart… Right? I am not saying I am a person like that… I never sued anyone. But their is those kind of people in this world. This is the reason why if I start a brand. I will make sure that it’s something that can’t hurt anyone. But then again.. it’s almost impossible.
A word about FB Marketplace. There are no startup costs, but just be aware that you must have enough funds upfront to support your sales. I recommend starting small and having a separate funded account. It takes time to get paid for your sales. Also, if you have a sale, and purchase from WM, there will often be no tracking numbers provided, which can make your customer antsy. Make sure you communicate this to your customer. If you use Amazon for your sales, set up a separate non-prime account. If they bust you you’ll lose your entire Amazon account.

Feel like half the people on here leaving comments work for ebay, pretty sure most people still doing well sales wise are paying anything from 20% upwards to 45% in sales fees to maintain consistent sales factoring ad spend etc. Plus amazon has a much larger market size. Also ebay rarely supports the seller in disputes, when evidently false claims are made, including not even removing negative feedback which has been proven false, in term affecting the business. Plus whilst amazon may instantly refund buyers, at least they will not proceed to hold all of my funds. Ebay is not better, not anymore. At least amazon has very clear cut policies, systems, which seem legally ok (unlike ebay) and will resolve things according to this. Plus they will not actively shut down sellers in the name of paid brand favouritism in the same way ebay does.
Another issue to take into consideration is that Ebay alienates buyers by refusing to allow them to leave any type of negative review of dishonest sellers. I was recently flagged by them as being an extortionist because I left a totally true, honest, negative review of a seller I dealt with. In America, I am granted free speech. When you try and prevent that, I also have the freedom to go elsewhere. Which in this case…..Ebay is dead to me. I have absolutely no trust in them anymore.
