Will Ketchup Provide An External Door Handle A Brand-New, Glossy Look?

This guide from Access Residential Hardware explains how to refinish exterior door hardware, ensuring it looks like the day it was installed. Sanding the surface is important, but not enough to scuff up the finish. Research the materials used in your lock to determine the best fit for your home. To be safe, remove the handle and try polishing the inside with steel wool.

If your door handles look dull and filthy, try using tomato sauce, paste, or ketchup to clean them. Apply the ketchup liberally to the door handle or knob, ensuring it’s well covered and leaving it for 15 minutes. After that, use a clean cloth and warm water to wipe the hardware clean.

To remove paint, boil your door handles. Tomato sauce is an unusual but effective method for cleaning brass door handles. Apply a thin, even layer of the ketchup to the door handle, leave it on for ten minutes, and gently wipe with a soft cloth. The longer the ketchup is left on, the cleaner your brass fittings will be. Leave them for 10 to 15 minutes for the most effective results.

In summary, using tomato sauce, paste, or ketchup can help restore the shine of tarnished brass door handles. It’s essential to use material-specific solutions such as lemon juice, baking soda, soap, and water to effectively clean and maintain the shine of your door handles.

  • Another nice way to keep water spots and stains from occurring. Anything that has an oily content will work. One of the oldest tricks is furniture polish I learned many years ago, which I have been using for about 30 years, and it works. You spray all over your faucets, sinks, and bathroom tiles. Wipe lightly the faucets, sinks, and tiles. It keeps hard water from building up on your tiles in your shower. Try that too. Thanks for another tip. ❤

  • You know that Rain-X stuff they make for the windshield of your car? It also will make water bead and run off of your shower doors and any fixtures in the same way. Much better than squeegeeing your shower doors or wiping down the faucet every time you use it. Works on glas/metal surfaces in the kitchen also. That’s an actual trick that works.

  • Toilet paper can scratch the chrome, or other, finish. Also, you can also use car wax, RainX, etc, (with a microfiber towel) which would be easier and not leave greasy surface. Also, no matter what you use, you’ll have to do it every time you clean the sink – even just soap will reduce or eliminate surface coating.

  • This is a great trick. I actually have another slightly weird similar tip which is if you have very light pet scratches in the paint of doors, use vaseline. If it has fully taken the paint off it won’t work, but if it is regular interior paint on a door which has that slight sheen to it, buffing a tiny amount of vaseline into it will hide it from most angles. Buff it really well, you don’t want it to be sticky or super shiny lol, but it will fill the tiny crevices just enough to smooth out the visible scratches.

  • Birmingham UK. Looks like it creates a thin barrier. I do a similar thing with soap (think I may have done toothpaste also) over a mirror, then rubbed off. Then when shaving the steam from the hot water doesn’t cause the mirror to be foggy. I’m guessing I could use Vaseline as a substitute here also.

  • Nice and shiny, until the first time someone touches it, the fingerprints are now more visible and will also transfer the oily film onto the light switches, mirror and everything else you touch. Sort of more like a way to make a mess that’s shared by the entire family after going to the bathroom and “washing” their hands with an oily sink. 😂

  • Beautiful!!!…for the momemt! In west texas, that would be covered in dirt/sand before noon. Any kind of oil or even cleaners likw Pledge are no good unless you’re just trying to shine up for a party that night, an open house event in real estate, or something in that nature. Oh and what do people think of the greasey hands when they leave this restroom? I’m sorry I’m not trying to be ugly but just thinking outloud

  • It seems to me, that just like using tire shine on your tires, armor all on your car dash, petrolatum products in your hair to make it appear shiny, or a freshly washed car when it’s still wet looks good. It’s just a coating. Wouldn’t the vaseline make everything a little greasy feeling, though, looks nice?

  • Good God, I is it possible for you to make a longer article about a shorter hack? Seriously this could’ve been done in 35 seconds and I would’ve loved it you drug it on for minutes and I feel like my life is passing me for my eyes washing this ridiculous scrubbing your sink with toilet paper. We get it keep it simple OK you get a lot more likes.

  • After every use of my sink, mostly for shaving, I just simply wipe it down with the towel hanging nearby. Takes less than 20 seconds and my ceramic sink and tap chrome work are always clean and shinny. Plus its free and no chemicals being put into the drains. It just takes a little self discipline and you will always have gleaming sink area.

  • I used to put Vaseline on my lip when I got cold sores, Then I cut down on manufactured food rich with refined sugar only added in only to make you eat more of it, faster, now I never get flu, colds or cold sores, I wondered what I could use the Vaseline for, interesting tip. (edit I forgot to say, I get less flatulence now, with a lower sugary food intake, before I used to fart all day long)

  • Do you not pay attention when they tell you to never put grease down your drains? What do you think this stuff is. Goop. yeah thats not going to do your septic system any good, and not only septic but will aid in gooping up your drain and pipes as it will coat your pipes and then hair and other debris will stick to it and make it a goopy mess. until it clogs or causes slow drain. Bad idea, really bad idea especially if you have a septic system. Dont do this and stop telling people to do this. smh
