Scottish interior design is influenced by the combination of regional crafts and natural beauty of the region. Infusing Scottish design into contemporary UK interiors allows for a fresh and innovative approach, allowing homeowners to incorporate modern takes on Scottish traditions such as stags and tweed. Scottish interior design styles seamlessly blend tradition with modern aesthetics, often embracing natural colors, textures, local artisanal crafts, and rustic charm.
The Scottish landscape features bottomless blue lochs, misty grey skies, hills dusted with purple heather, and rolling green hills. The architects envisioned houses that combined the coziness of a Highland croft with the airiness of a modern house. However, large-scale housebuilders mass-produce these faux-period houses, which are often clustered together with little spacing between homes.
Scottish homes are rooted in shared history and design principles between both cultures, focusing on conservation, beauty, and sustainability. Michael Angus, Scotland’s Home of the Year architect, showcases some of Scotland’s stylish and unique homes, such as the Campbell-Jones clan cabin with plywood interiors and a 19th-century terrace in Aberdeen. Traditional Scottish buildings are solid, low, and often made of stone, with tiny windows to protect from the weather.
In summary, Scottish interior design is characterized by its blend of tradition, modern aesthetics, and natural elements. The country’s rich cultural heritage and unique designs contribute to its unique and stylish homes.

I am always buying frames, recently four more in different sizes. I am doing a room with only gold frames at the moment. My best recent find is a huge heavy one that some ‘artist’ covered in blobs of nail polish after sanding off the original finish ! It is going to be a large mirror, I paid ten dollars and I will make the mirror glass with a spray. I do have an unused bathroom full of frames in every size and pieces of glass as I cut my own to size, easy to do.
Great review of this book of Scotland. I’m sure the warm colored interiors from the walls, to the books, rugs, furnishings, and of course, the fireplace would make winter a little easier to endure. Love the tartans and tweeds too. Always enjoy the “extras” you show us (shopping, trips, walks, crafts, home keeping) and the general looks perfect and “in charge” at your home. Thanks Mary!
