Why are Farrow and Ball so expensive?
Farrow and Ball paints are more expensive due to their higher pigment content, which results in deeper colors and more sympathetic colors. They were the first to transition to a water-based range in the industry, surpassing industry standards. In the 1970s and 1980s, most manufacturers created acrylic paints with fewer pigments and added plastics for coverage, stability, and consistency. In the last decade, water-based paints have taken over to reduce the use of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the environment.
Farrow and Ball now add between one to 20% more pigment to improve opacity and coverage. Some companies used to charge extra for using Farrow and Ball, but brush-men like them well enough. Some companies may expect Farrow and Ball buyers to provide better biscuits.
What brand of paint lasts longest?
The longevity of exterior paint depends on several factors, including the quality of the paint, environmental conditions, and the quality of the paint used. High-quality 100 acrylic latex paints like Sherwin-Williams Duration and Rhino Shield offer protection against fading, cracking, and peeling, while lighter paint colors like beige, tan, light brown, light blues, white, and light green reflect sunlight and heat away from surfaces, reducing UV damage and keeping the building’s exterior looking fresh longer.
Elastomeric wall coatings provide a waterproof barrier, and products like Rhino Shield come with long-term warranties. Professional application by experienced services ensures maximum durability, while regular maintenance, including cleaning surfaces, checking for damages, and applying sealants, preserves appearance and function over time. Sun exposure is a significant factor affecting the longevity of exterior paint on commercial and industrial properties.
What paint do most professional painters use?
Professional painters use premium paints like Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams, which are environmentally friendly and offer a wide range of options. Semi-gloss or gloss paints are ideal for a polished finish, while high-quality acrylic paints are ideal for interior walls due to their durability and resistance to fading and staining. Our team of interior house painters can help with single rooms or entire homes, and can arrange a free consultation to discuss their services.
What paint brand do contractors use?
Painting contractors often choose Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams for quality paint due to their popularity and success. However, choosing the best paint is an impossible distinction. The best painters often go back and forth between brands, often based on availability rather than superiority. Clients may have specific color preferences that only apply to one brand. At Painters Inc., they have chosen both brands at nearly equal rates in years of experience.
If a customer has a preference, they will follow their lead. Using either brand will result in excellent outcomes, as it is more about what is available than which one is better. Overall, the choice between Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams is a personal preference and can impact the decision-making process.

What interior paint lasts the longest?
The quality of paint is crucial for its longevity and maintaining its original appearance. High-quality paints have better binders, which affect stain and crack resistance, adhesion, and durability. Latex paints with 100% acrylic binders are especially long-lasting, as they are more expensive but provide better durability and better adhesion. Quality paints also have more additives, making them easier to apply and providing protective qualities.
When choosing paint color, some colors stand the test of time better than others, such as whites, grays, blues, and greens, as they can complement various décor styles. Bright colors can lose their appeal when clashed with updated styles or décor, so it’s best to choose a paint color that can endure a few interior design updates before changing it.
The kitchen is a high-use room in a house, and it experiences wear and tear due to heat from preparing meals, constant touch of cabinets, and smoke and fumes from cooking. Therefore, it’s essential to choose a paint color that can withstand a few interior design updates before making a change.
What is the difference between Farrow and Ball and Dulux paint?
Farrow and Ball primarily offers interior and exterior wall paints, but their product range is limited compared to Dulux Trade. Dulux Trade is known for its exceptional color matching capabilities, allowing for custom color matches for precise looks. However, Farrow and Ball’s strength lies in its unique and carefully curated color palette, which may not offer the same level of flexibility in color matching or customization. For those seeking specific colors, Dulux Trade Paint may be a better choice.

It is possible to achieve further savings on the product by engaging the services of a contractor, who is able to access special pricing. What color is replacing gray in 2024?
In the new year, warm, light brown will replace gray as the neutral of choice. This change is driven by a desire for warmth and color in rooms while maintaining an earthy palette. Farrow and Ball predicts that layering multiple sandy, caramel tones in one room will be on-trend. The paint company’s color curator, Joa Studholme, believes that using lighter tones like Oxford Stone on walls and stronger Tanner’s Brown on trim will make the room feel lighter and larger.

Benjamin Moore is without a doubt my favorite. BM has beautiful colors and the paint functions extremely well. It doesn’t fade over the years the way some others do and it goes on the walls easily, no need for tons of coats. However it is a bit pricier than others so when trying to paint a big space sometimes I do Behr because its still a solidly good paint but much more affordable.
Why does ben moore allow places to carry their paint when they dont really know about the different aspects of the paint or even carry updated paint chips. I went to ace and got a sample card. Long story short, their chip was so old, it looked completely different than the chip at a ben moore main store. Terrible
Hi James, my family has a vacation home near the sea in Greece. It gets very humid and moist during the summer. Plus, we are only the once every year if we are lucky. I’m looking for the right gloss for the bathroom and bathroom ceiling? What’s your recommendation? I’m having Aura bath and Spa shipped from Germany, since it’s not available on Greek market. Coincidentally, Dulux is very widespread in Greece. AKZO NOBEL has a huge footprint. Are there any products that you could recommend for iron wrought (balcony), interior doors, etc.? Your insight would be greatly appreciated.
Behr has the best quality and most useful samples but I gravitate toward the BM and SW colors more. I am currently looking for grays to paint my house interior and SW does not have samples because of the pandemic? or something, so I have to go to Lowes to get an HGTV SW sample and that paint sample is so cheap and only comes in Satin, when I am a flat and matte person. The BM samples are big and expensive and only come in eggshell. 🤦🏻♀️ So I have been in color sampling hell for awhile now.
I have a problem that needs a solution. I painted the guest bedroom in a color match of farrow and ball’s Pink Ground. I bought a sample, along with other pink samples and tried it out on the wall first. So I painted the room and it turns out it doesn’t work because I have a sloped ceiling. I can’t paint just the walls because there is no sharp edge where the ceiling meets the wall. So pink ground went on the ceiling. The effect is that the paint color has been magnified. All that pink is bouncing off all the other surfaces and it makes the room feel claustrophobic. I don’t want to just repaint the room White. I’d like it to have a light pinky peach hue. But I can’t find a color to replace it with that has the right LRV. I’ve looked into French Macaron and French Manicure. I love these two colors but their LRVs are not a whole lot brighter. So what now? Do I paint a color on the lower third of the wall and white everywhere else? Just go back to white? Get a 75% solution? Any ideas?
If we went with Duration Matte for walls what would you suggest for trim? Satin or semigloss? I like the skip one rule, but our painters typically do semigloss for trim, which I would what to do if we chose to go with an eggshell sheen for walls. Worried with the Duration Matte walls and semigloss trim that the trim will stand out way too much? Also, with the Duration Matte being versatile in all rooms. Can you still use eggshell in bathrooms? Wanting to keep it simple with the same sheens for walls! Would love your suggestions!!!!
what’s the difference between pro mar 200, 400, emerald and super paint…..also the voc content in these paints is that something people with allergy have noticed?……..also in your opinion is it better to use spray vs roller……and if using spray does it need 2 coats or just one ?….the painter im considering is saying he will use spray and without waiting for spray to dry go over it a second time is that how its done ?…..have no dogs or kids ..in las vegas area if you know someone in my area would not mind a recommendation
Such a great review. I always get Emerald just because I’m extra but now I’m super curious to try this and superpaint. I only do DIY and so only paint every so often, but have come to really appreciate the process when I do. The only thing I know for sure is to stick to SW products. I’m sure BM makes great paints but like duration, not sure I’ll get to experience them on my own. I’m sure if I went through thousands of gallons as you have I’d have an opinion on saving $10-20 per gallon, but was afraid to risk being unhappy stepping down. Are there any post application benefits to duration such as ability clean, longevity, touch ups? What is the reason Emerald is considered a “superior” product?
@SuperVassarBrothers thanks for the article. I had watched your Aura review so wanted to check on this one as well. I’m painting a small full bath that has had mold issues even though we use the fan (and have changed the fan). Unfortunately, it also has an acoustical tile ceiling 😔 It’s an old house and that’s what was in it when we bought it 30+ years ago (and we didn’t know better back then). We aren’t at a point where we can redo the ceiling in there yet so I’m hoping to just make it more pleasant to be in there until we can. I’ve cleaned the walls and ceiling as best as I can to get the surface mold off and went over it all with vinegar. I’m going to be using the Zinsser mold killing primer (I know you recommend oil but this is the only full bath in the house so I have to get it done in a day). How well does the Duration cure? I have 2 daughters, so sponge baths are out 😂 Anything else besides fans and a dehumidifier that would help with drying and curing? Thanks for the info. Even though it’d probably make most professionals cringe, I’m going to paint over those ceiling tiles, just to seal in the stains and improve the aesthetics in there. I can’t stand looking at it anymore.
Emerald is way better…. And this is coming from someone that absolutely loves duration… But it just doesn’t get the same quality of finish even on some lighter colors. On high end projects or large walls in general, or dark colors… I automatically go for emerald to save myself the headache. It’s just in a league of its own… Just like the emerald trim paint.. Unmatched performance.
Nice review. I use Duration satin myself. It is great if you have decent walls with little or no detectable imperfections, otherwise matte (or egshell) is good too. I’ve also used the Emerald line and like it, mainly because it does come in egshell and I use in on my tongue and grove ceilings. Both covered well even when the cut edge started to dry before I got to that section. I’m always amazed that people will buy the cheapest paint they can get and wonder why it turns out bad. You tend to get what you pay for.
We built a garage suite over this past year and based on one of your earlier articles we went with Duration in the upper apartment and garage for all of the walls and trim. It is is an awesome paint. I painted all day and rarely had paint on me at the end of the day. We went with Satin on the trim instead of Semi-Gloss. I like the look but not the touch as much – not quite as smooth and seems less durable but time will tell. The only picture framing was when I discovered that one of the stores mixed a second can of a darker color with a Deep Base instead of an Ultra Deep Base and did not tell me. I found out too late. 🙁 Used 200 on the ceilings (except bathroom which was also Duration based on your recommendation) and PVA primer. Primer + 2 coats everywhere on new walls and they look great! Thanks for your recommendations – we are very happy with the results! As an aside I tried Emerald on my garage shelving as a comparison and it seems much better and more durable. If I was to do it again, I think I would use Emerald on the trim everywhere else.
Painting the whole house with worldly Gray. We want to do duration or emerald as it’s durable and we have a kid. however, how shiny is the satin? Is the mat just as washable as the satin in duration or emerald? It doesn’t look like I can find eggshell in any of these or low Sheen. I also saw the Benjamin Moore has a washable matte
Ready to paint a bedroom feature wall using a very dark color and soft white on the rest of the walls over the current flat SW Kilim beige on the walls. And also using the same soft white color over Kilim beige semi-gloss in a bathroom with a shower enclosure. Was hoping for one coat to cover, but you are saying two coats would be needed, for both the dark paint and soft white paint? SW store says sure one coat is all that’s needed. Appreciate the help. Glad I found your YouTube page.
how’s the moisture resistance and washability compared to BM Aura bath and spa. the BM is 100% acrylic which I think helps in durability and moisture resistance. I tried to look it up but can’t find out whether Duration is. looks like Solo may be the only line from SW that’s 100% acrylic? lastly, what primer do you recommend for bathrooms with humidity. thanks
I’m planning on buying two gallons of the Duration or Emerald (either Satin or Matte) soon for a bedroom and it will be my first time painting. I would like to know which rollers and brushes (size and type) would you recommend using with these paints for the wall, ceiling, trim and bi-fold door? thank you!
Jeremy – Thanks for all the reviews and education. Question: I am finishing my basement. Just used kilz drywall primer on bare drywall… then I textured… now I’m trying to get educated on the paint to put on the walls.. and found your articles. We are wanting a simple white, using it for both walls and ceilings…. Will I regret using the duration matte on the ceiling? Seems like the right choice for the wall… but you have recco’s for ceiling paints… I have a Graco airless sprayer… and I’m looking for the easy button and just use one type of paint for walls and ceilings… but will I regret having this on the ceiling… it’s a walkout basement… and standard basement bedroom with a tray ceiling. Thanks.
Let me help you out. Dont put the answer to the question in the article title. It makes me not even want to watch the article. The title tells me the answer to the question, so theres no need to click and watch. If i agree that Duration is the best, then I already agree and there no need to watch. If i dont like Duration, then I definatley wont watch. Leave a mystery in the title that will draw people in to watch, then convince them as they are perusal to the conclusion the Duration is the best. Hope this helps get you more views
Thank you for this article. My wife and I have decided to paint our interior with SW Pure White in the Duration line. However we are disagreeing on the sheen I prefer matte on the walls since Pure White is a warmer color, but she wants a satin finish. The interior space is small and gets decent but not great natural lighting, hence why she is insisting the satin. I’m just worried the satin might be too bright for a small space and kill the warm feel I want to achieve. Should I just budge?
