Which Decoration Colors Go Well With Grey Walls?

Jenny Williamson of West Rose Design is a fan of gray, and her office features charcoal gray walls mixed with warm woods, golds, and camel brown for depth and richness. Grey is the most versatile color to decorate with, with 20 different shades available from yellow to pink. Interior stylists reveal that there’s a right shade of gray for any room, and blue is a great accent color for gray walls. Softer, lighter colors like light blue, green, and yellow can make the space feel more open and inviting.

Modern decor can be enhanced by stylish black-and-white photographs in tasteful frames. Light grey walls can be complemented with a statement navy feature wall or a ceiling reminiscent of the night sky. Pale grey rooms can seem chilly, but many colors complement gray nicely, such as whites and blacks for neutral choices, blues and greens for more contemporary greys, and warmer beige or purples for a more traditional tone.

Colors that go with gray are equally endless, with cooler grays pairing well with blues, purples, and teals, while warmer grays (think mushroom and putty) pair better with reds, oranges, and other warm shades. Tomato red makes a bold statement when used with a mix of white and softer grays on the walls and textiles.

In summary, gray is a versatile color that can be paired with various colors, patterns, and textures to create a unique and inviting space.

How can I brighten my room with grey walls?

Grey is a versatile color that can add warmth to a space, especially when combined with a grey sofa. To add color, use multi-colored scatter cushions and throws, such as blush pink or vibrant yellow, as bright accents. Complementary colors with warm undertones can be low-key, but daring contrasts can be used. If cool tones are used, consider using a darker shade for accent walls or architectural details. If you want to move away from an all-grey palette, consider using jewel shades or rich plum tones.

Furniture can also be a way to incorporate more color into a grey living space. Mid-century style furniture is popular for dark grey living rooms, but these pieces tend to be made from woods with darker tones. Uplift a dark wood table or teak cabinet by replacing existing legs with gold or copper hairpin ones.

  • Not sure why this article was recommended to me…funny enough…I used to rent this apartment, then a couple of years ago, my wife and I bought a house and were trying to decide on the interior color…couldn’t agree on anything other than we used to really like the color of the apartment we had just moved out of…I call their office and asked for the color scheme…their maintenance guy calls me back and what do ya know!! It was frigging agreeable gray…we painted the whole house agreeable gray…baby room and all.

  • Do me a fave and talk to us about passive or reflection. They are my top to reccomendations when a client speaks the word grey, and then I narrow down specifics from there if not by default sticking with one of the 2. I do agree, pun intended, that agreeable grey is one of the safest color best to match with anything anywhere.

  • Thanks for another great article! We just painted the kitchen and DR AG in January, with BM Super White trim. AG is definitely cooler than SW Modern Gray, which appeared more beige to us. BM Edgecomb Gray was too beige, did not seem gray at all. It was very similar, but warmer, than SW Modern Gray. After planning to use Edgecomb, we didn’t like how beige it looked when the painting started. AG was the perfect choice, very neutral, never too cold.

  • Great article, i have a sample from agreeable gray that i ordered off samplize along with BM pale oak, accessible beige and canvas tan, i have a north facing living room with pinky beige tile that has some taupe and cream in in and its hard to choose a good light gray that doesn’t have green as i read it will make the pink in the tile stand out more, out of the 4 samples agreeable grey is the one i like more but for decor im not sure if blue(like navy, indigo) or maybe aegean green for pillows would look good with it

  • Glad to see this article. I need to paint my stairwell and connecting hall. Selecting a color for this low lighting area with dark wood trim in bottom hall and staircase with oak trim upstairs is a nightmare! Only one window in upper hall for natural light. Maybe this will work. Can’t afford a mistake with cost of painting. Will try sample. Thank you for this info!

  • When I went to put my house on the market a couple years ago, my Agent and her decorator came in and said, oh dear you should paint the interior. The decorator said “SW 7029 Agreeable Gray” on all the walls. I will admit it looked great, and the first person to look at it on that the first the house listed gave my asking price.

  • I am so laughing out loud as I just redid my home with agreeable grey and picked these colors out last year and changed ceilings to alabaster! I am loving this color however in my north facing room the color does feel more cool with a cooler blue undertone and not the warm greige that other parts of my home feel. I do love this color though!

  • Most people hail this color, and it’s not bad. But in my kitchen, it appears as ICE BLUE. Lighting doesn’t matter in this area, trust me. I even showed it to an SW color consultant. She was kind of amazed by it. Yes, in this sense, it absolutely clashes with the golden oak AND my dark floors in the next room. Test it out first, it’s not a fix all. Besides in my kitchen, its a nice color.

  • I want to paint cabinets gray but nothing to dark. I’M also doing all over gray light or midtone gray. Does does Sw light french gray as cabinet color coordinate with sw oracle or network grays as a wall color? My house is open floor plan. Or would you recommend one color but different sheens. Thanks

  • Bought a house several months ago in a gray, cloudy part of the country and the entire interior was painted in Agreeable Gray. I truly disliked being enveloped in this color – it looked muddy, unflattering and depressing on the walls. I guess it was barely tolerable in the south facing rooms but really died everywhere else. Just repainted with C2 Tusk and a few others (C2 Secret, C2 Portage, C2 Aspen and C2 Pearl) and it has made a huge difference. Agreeable Gray is now a bad memory. I just couldn’t stand it, particularly waking up to it.

  • Agreeable Gray is what we used to to paint several rooms in our house. Our living room is Shoji white which goes beautifully with it. I’m going to repaint my hallway and front entryway as I want something different. With Led lighting it does seem to have have a tiny bit of purple undertones in those dark rooms (which I don’t like.) in a natural well lighted room Agreeable Gray is really pretty.

  • Hi. 🙂 Please, let us pray together. Dear God who art in heaven hallow be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever in Jesus Christ’s name we pray amen.

  • I love the flannel grey. I want to do my walls grey, but I’m at a loss of what color grey. I have a dark brown sofa & a 1920’s original wood flooring. Kind of like a medium hickory color. I have 4 bay windows, but don’t get direct sun…but nice light in day time. Anyone have any idea’s on which grey to go with? Thanks
