Ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets are often less expensive than custom-built cabinets due to their mass production and use of less expensive materials. These cabinets are commonly found in big-box home improvement stores or online retailers. RTA cabinets are typically cheaper than those purchased at Home Depot, Lowes, or other large stores, as they are made from less expensive materials.
IKEA offers stylish and modern RTA cabinets that come flat-packed and are cheaper than most other cabinets. The best part about this brick-and-mortar dealer is that you don’t have to pay delivery. Installation for Ikea cabinets is easier for most people, as they don’t level the cabinets to the floor.
However, RTA cabinets are not cheaply made. They are cost-effective, offer various designs, and are DIY-friendly, making them popular for budget-conscious homeowners. RTA cabinets are usually made of laminated particle board, which is cheaper and lighter than plywood or hardwood used in other types of cabinetry. RTA cabinets are great for quick renovations on a budget but are high quality enough to last for decades.
In summary, RTA cabinets are a cost-effective option for homeowners looking to renovate their kitchen on a budget. They are made from less expensive materials and are typically made of laminated particle board, making them a cost-effective choice for those looking to save money on their kitchen renovation.

How can you tell cheap cabinets?
Cabinet backs can be categorized into thin panels, metal hanging rails, picture frame construction, or particle board panels. Cheaper cabinets may use thin panels, leaving the wall visible, or poor quality cabinets may have particle board panels at the full height. To cut a hole for wiring, reinforcements must be added when hanging the cabinet. Soft-close hinges are crucial for opening and closing cabinets, and weak or poorly made ones can cause doors to become loose, sagging, or never close properly.
The best quality hinges have a special mechanism that allows doors to close softly, using a nickel plate on a hardened steel hinge. These hinges can adjust six ways, allowing adjustments for seasonal movement and wood expansion and contraction.
Why is it so expensive to install cabinets?
Cabinets require significant labor, including cutting and sizing materials, delivering them, and installing them. The installation process is crucial, as it requires skill and expertise to ensure level cabinets, smooth door openings, and longevity. Many people prefer not to buy and bring their own cabinets home, making it a costly endeavor. Skilled kitchen cabinet contractors are worth the investment as they can ensure the cabinets are installed correctly and last for years.
How to tell if cabinets are cheap?
The Swedish furniture retailer IKEA, renowned for its use of medium-density fibreboard (MDF) in its furniture, is undergoing a transition in its product range, with the introduction of wood doors and drawer fronts. These are being manufactured using lower-grade particle board or chipboard.
What is the cheapest type of cabinet?
Particleboard is the cheapest type of wood for cabinets due to its cost-effectiveness and sustainability. Made from wood fibers and resin, it is produced at a lower cost than solid wood and allows manufacturers to use fast-growing trees and wood byproducts. However, cheaper wood options like MDF and particleboard may be less durable than solid wood, susceptible to water damage, warping, and wear over time. They may also lack the aesthetic appeal and longevity of higher-quality wood options. Therefore, solid wood like oak or pine is often considered a more affordable choice for cabinets.
What are the disadvantages of RTA?
Regional trade agreements can have several downsides, including trade deflection, increased economic dependence, reduction of economic sovereignty and independence of economic policies, and domestic industry bankruptcy. Non-member countries can exploit tariff differences for their own benefit, and economic dependence can spread quickly. Economic unions, where member states adopt joint policies, may be unsuitable for individual member countries’ interests, favoring large-scale economies and ignoring other member countries’ interests.
Additionally, increased competition can lead to domestic industry bankruptcy due to inefficiency and low competitiveness, and labor mobility may be low if regional trade agreements are only at the free trade area stage.
Why are built in cabinets so expensive?
The construction of kitchen cabinets necessitates the use of specialized joinery, hinges, drawer glides, and organizational systems to ensure durability, which consequently results in higher prices due to their capacity to withstand decades of wear and tear.

Are RTA cabinets less expensive?
RTA cabinets have gained popularity in the remodeling market due to their affordability and quality. They come in ready-to-assemble packages with various door styles, finishes, wood varieties, and hardware types. RTA cabinets are less expensive due to the lack of factory assembly and lower shipping costs. Is it cheaper to buy cabinets or have them built?
Building your own custom kitchen cabinets is cost-effective as you can choose the materials you want firsthand and avoid paying for artistry. However, designing your cabinets can be exhausting and time-consuming, and you will need to purchase all the necessary tools and materials. If you already have the necessary tools, you can borrow them from a friend. However, having a shed full of tools will only take you so far if you don’t have top-level wood crafting skills. To avoid waste, it is crucial to evaluate your level of expertise before embarking on this arduous task.

After constructing a few more cabinets I have decided that they aren’t that bad. I’ve had several more clasps break, but you can fix this by using a small drywall screw to screw the clasps together and directly into the plywood. A few more well placed screws keep the cabinets together quite nicely. Aside from that, they are pretty good. There are definitely cheap parts, but they are cheap cabinets, so you get what you pay for. If you have any questions, feel free to leave them in the comments below!
I think it just might be what you purchased. They have varying quality cabinets at RTA. Mine had better material. I have dovetail cabinets with soft close drawers from Jarlin. I didn’t have whatever plastic you had for assembly. All of the stuff I had was metal. My only complaint was not having instructions in the box, but they had articles online. I paid $5300 for 7 cabinets. I’m very happy with my purchase.
