Anybody remember life before Lowe’s and Home Depot? Yep. They still had stores. You need wood, you go to a lumber yard, you need metal, go to a foundry or a distributor. Lowe’s and Home Depot just tried to do everything at once and it was destined to fail. I find myself browsing their sites to for things I need and when I find something I like, I have to special order it. So if Lowe’s and Home Depot are going to force us to special order things, why wouldn’t people use Amazon instead to get exactly what they want in the same amount of time? Seems like Lowes and Home Depot would do much better by offering more than 1 or 2 brands. Some of these joints don’t even have basic tools, like a pipe cutter. I went to home depot the other day and they had zero pipe cutters. Plenty of tubing cutters, but nothing for heavy pipe. At Lowe’s and Home Depot you will be paying a markup for bad quality materials like warped 2 x 4s. Anything on the shelves will be basic with anything advanced requiring a special order. I dunno man. Good riddance to them both. I hope the lumber yards and specific material businesses can regain their foothold stolen by the Walmarts of home improvement.
I know multiple people that do this kind of work like electricity stuff building buildings and stuff. And they say never ever do your own electricity. Can’t tell you how many people use mastic mortar in wet areas. Mastic mortar is for dry areas the mortar will not setup in areas where moisture is present. Things that can destroy your house are better left to people with knowledge. Not saying you cannot attain the knowledge yourself but understand prepping for a job is far more important than the job itself. I built our tile shower 10 years ago and have no issues, but I spent a couple months reading up on materials before ever deciding what to purchase. I watch the articles on proper prep and applying the water proofing membrane and curb to the drain. It took me much longer to do the job than the pros, but I saved 12,000 off the price which made it all worth it in the end.
My HVAC system hasn’t worked this whole Summer. I’m in South Carolina. Heat indexes over 100, humidity over 60 most days. Luckily, we have 2 small 5,000btu window units. My car needs brakes, I’m riding on metal, the control arms are broken and the a/c compressor in the car needs replaced. I’m a cancer patient.

Now, if people move towards renting instead of owning, that would eliminate a significant part of certain types of those home improvements. The projects that are most likely to decrease are structural and yard related projects. The type of projects that are likely to increase are things like repainting rooms, changing window treatments, floor coverings, light fixtures, changing door and cabinet hardware and simpler things.
Most of what homeowners are gonna run into, problem wise, is city regulations and permits. Almost all states, counties and cities require a permit of some sort to have any kind of work or repair done to a home. Where I live, a permit is required just to build a porch or small deck. And if your building a shed that will not have power ran to it, depending on size, a permit is required. All electrical work in my area requires a permit and a licensed electrician, unless its to change out switches, receptacles, light fixtures, fans etc etc etc. So thats the challenge most homeowners are gonna face when tackling tasks on their own. Me, however, do all this type of work and dont charge an arm and a leg or your first born. I have a set price list for various installations as well as a rate for larger projects, which makes me more of a budget friendly handyman 😉👍
Many people can do their own repairs and if they can’t they will hire a handyman or recruit a friend. If they have to get it done they will. Some things you can put off some you can’t and the things they can’t will get done even if it means pulling out the credit cards. And remember too these contractors aren’t going to be as busy maybe causing them to lower their prices.
My friend what you are saying is mostly true. What you left out is the fact that the county and the city have total control over all construction work in their areas. I used to be an electrician and helped people as best as I could with their problems and costs for electrical work. Then the contractors took over the politicians in the area that you were trying to help people. Some of these so called electricians have been responsible for house fires and even worse, but they had the contractors and politicians backing them up. What could I do? I quit so that I would not be sued by the city or county for not having a city license to do said work. Good luck folks.
There have been I believe 56,000 contracts broken by potential home buyers. That should tell you something also about the economy. More people are staying put unless or until the interest rates comes down and also because of lack of inventory, new homes are basically junk because builders are rushing through and hiring people who don’t have the experience or skills to build it right.
Not sure if I agree. This is the information age and we can do more then we have ever done. I know there are limitations with certain people’s abilities but there are those of us who understand how to research like running electrical wiring exposed to elements you need run ground rated burial wire so it doesn’t rot or determinate when exposed to elements and yes I understand my limits and I myself won’t wire in a C-span smart panel for my solar panels that I desire for my home. I think most people understand their limits. People can do amazing things out of necessity. don’t discount the Ingenuity of humans.
I do my own work on my car and house. Most work is easy but work like an HVAC system shouldn’t cost 30k and a handy person can install their own but would require a Cooling Company to do any freon work required and code normally requires electricians to hook up the wiring. I rewired a house I owned in Michigan some years ago. Adding a second electric panel is easy but if you are a jamok that screws things up by just looking at them, stay away.

My husband does his own DIY, difference is we get a Permit, get an Inspection done, and city provides Approved documentation, and we keep that on file and on-line. He does thing right. Important for homeowner’s insurance. Always pay for a permit, never just do it. That’s crazy. Do things the right way or it may come back to haunt you, especially if you decide to sell your home down the line. We file all permits, receipts, and documentation for everything we do to the house. NEVER do otherwise. Get everything inspected and passed and signed. Have all the paper trail, and hard drive and photos of everything.
I work at a home improvement store in the midwest. Overstock lumber is a lot less than the previous year. Can definitely see the difference in less supply volume, either from less mills or who knows maybe less labor at the mills too. Does seem like less contractors coming through, if we didn’t have the hispanic population around our store we wouldn’t float well because they’re literally almost 1/2 our total sales in the yard seems like.
I don’t go to Lowes anymore. It used to be a fairly good store, not anymore. At least not the store near me. They never have what I am looking for or they are always out of something. I tend to mostly go to Home Depot now. Though Home Depot can be that way too sometimes. One of the down sides to online shopping I guess.
This brings back memories I lived up the street in the apartments called Creekside Apartments and I worked all of them I worked at old Navy I worked in Jcpenney I worked at all Broadway shoes and also I shopped a lot at Sam Ash sad to see them go and also went to the movies there a lot when I worked there I work there until Jcpenney closed it was a thriving mall especially Saturday Saturdays were the day when people came out families they had a few restaurants there I think they had an Applebee’sAnd some of the restaurants I can’t remember but it was a thriving mall I want to say in the 90s early 2000s up to about 2010 you started to see stores close and leave I thought it was a nice piece of real estate I keep hearing that they’re going to close and turn that area into housing or apartment complex

I want to do a lot of things around the house but I can’t afford small trinkets in Lowe’s or Home Depot for $8 or $10 for screws. A lot of their stuff is made in Communist China but they charge as if their merchandise is made in Chicago. I’ve personally spent large sums monthly in these big box stores to maintain various properties. Over the last year or so I’ve been alarmed at how few people I’m encountering inside those stores. What’s equally troubling are the number of clearance markdowns of up to 70% off. It will not be surprising if they begin closing stores; they’re reaping the consequences of their rampant price gouging these last few years.

I’ve learned a lot about the handyman trades from observation, like to visit houses under construction and study the way things are done. It’s actually a habit of mine, everywhere I go and everything i see, I make mental notes in how it’s done correctly or if it’s done incorrectly, You can learn a lot too, from studying the many things they sell at Home Depot, how it’s used and where it’s used and what kind of need it serves or problem it solves.
I suppose you think it’s old fashioned, but there’s plenty of good books, some you can check out from the public library, that teach you electrical, plumbing, HVAC, roofing, drywall, painting, concrete, remodeling, carpentry and construction. I’m a professional handyman and most everything I know today, over the years, I learned from reading books. Another thing too, books are much more reliable than You Tube. People who write books are the experts you can trust
I don’t think there is an insurance that covers any damage to your home if you did the work yourself. You can always buy Builders’ Risk Insurance but now you have a monthly cost you didn’t expect to pay or didn’t know you needed it. If you want to do it yourself you really need to know what you are doing because any damage, flooding, fire, etc., resulting from your work, well your regular homeowner’s insurance isn’t going to cover squat.
Menards is way better than Lowe’s or home Depot . It has a gigantic lumber yard . I have never been a Lowe’s fan I have shopped in them a few times but I really don’t like the stores 🏪. Home Depot the prices are too high and they don’t carry that much lumber anyway . Menards is 10 times better. And even if you need something electrical ceiling fans or new bathtub 🛁. Menards is way more organized. The way they have the inside and outside of the store 🏪. And besides do you want to load whatever you’re buying two times ? Put it on cards push it through the store check out . And then loaded in your vehicle no ! You go to Menards you just get a purchase ticket for whatever lumber you’re buying or landscaping blocks or whatever . Then you just drive your vehicle around back 🔙. It’s a drive-thru lumber yard . Who wants to pick up the material two times just to get it in your vehicle to go home ? Whoever designed home Depot stores is a dummy . Even if you buy drywall or something else . I don’t want to load it on a cart and push it through a store. I just want to drive right up to it and put in my vehicle . I purchased a refrigerator at Lowe’s I don’t know why I did I just was there but . It was a huge ordeal I had to wait around in the parking lot in front of the store 🏪. For them to bring it out and there’s all those people and stuff in the way . If I would have just purchased it at Menards . I could have just got my receipt drove around back .
A pipe developed a pin hole on our water heater, leaked onto the closet floor that it’s in. it managed to knock out the pilot light, So to ACE hubby went, got what he needed and replaced the pipe, relit the pilot light, np. Any roof leaks we get on the roof with sealant and use a paint roller to spread it on.. No more leaks. It’s got white streaks ontop of black shingles but who cares 🤣🤣🤣
Ok, the US economy is in either a recession or even a depression. It is only logical that businesses are looking into how are they going to survive. So yes getting rid of under performing locations is actually a good idea. During the Great Depression, The DL&W, Pennsylvannia, and New York Central managed to make changes and not go bankrupt during those years. The CRI&P went broke because it relied heavily on agriculture which was hit hard in those days and didn’t have much in overhead haulage. So yes we are going to see companies go broke and close down and others retrenching and running leaner. Yes those who did not manage their money well and have too much consumer debt will feel lots of pain and maybe lose everything because they thought they had to keep up with the Jones. This is what happens when you get greedy. Greed will always bite you in the buttock.
