What does red lining do to a car?
Modern cars have computer systems called rev-limiters that prevent the engine from straying too far into the redline by cutting fuel flow through the fuel injectors, fuel rail, or carburetor or disabling the ignition system until the engine drops to a safer operating speed. These systems are usually set to an RPM value at redline or a few hundred RPM above. Electronic Control Units (ECUs) in automatic transmission cars will upshift before the engine hits the redline even with maximum acceleration.
If manual override is used, the engine may go past redline for a brief amount of time before the ECU cuts power to pull it back or auto-upshift. When the car is in top gear and the engine is in redline due to high speed, the ECU cuts fuel to the engine, forcing it to decelerate until the engine begins operating below the redline.
However, a car is not prevented from redlining through inadvertent gear engagement. If a driver accidentally selects a lower gear when trying to shift up or down, the engine will be forced to rapidly rev-up to match the speed of the drivetrain. This can lead to rough and noticeable engine braking and likely engine damage, known as a “money shift”. Redlining in a diesel engine can be caused by fuel from an unintended source, such as flammable vapour in the intake air or a broken oil seal in a turbocharger.

I have the 2019 XSE, Wind Chill Pearl White with the awesome red interior. Mine is a fully loaded 4 cyl., love, love, love this car. Gas mileage is phenomenal, we drove from NC to SC, 800 mi. round trip, plus travel where we vacationed, on 1/2 tank of gas! I get sooooo many compliments on this car, the technology is amazing and easy to navigate, has the JBL premium sound system, loving the heads-up display, I could go on and on! NEVER wanted a Toyota ‘till I saw this Camry. Juast an absolutely beautiful vehicle %!
Great review! I also have the 2019 black and wind chill pearl with the red leather seats and the JBL premium sound system with the amazing moon roof. I get so many compliments and enjoy pulling up to work in it every day. The gas mileage is great. It took no time for everyone to figure out who it belonged to. This is my third camry and by far my favorite. My previous camrys were the LE model. I’m glad I decided to treat myself with this one. The only thing that I miss is not having Android Auto as it didn’t come out til 2020. Had a few issues with the remote start app and my Note 10, but I worked with Toyota and the dealership and 2 days later there was a new update pushed out to my unit and it has been working since. Great customer service.
Half of the interior is plastic. More plastic than a 2013 dodge avenger lol ….32 grand is a rip off for a 4 cylinder car. Sorry. I’d rather the new 2020 Sonata turbo N line 2.0T that’s coming out or even the Veloster N for 34 thousand Canadian or even a Veloster 1.6T ultimate w performance pack for 29000 0-60 in 6.0 seconds stock. The Camry is a mom mobile with the 4 cylinder.
I purchased my 2019 xse 4 cyclinder pearl white with black top, red interior, panoramic sunroof & JBL sound system in Jan of this year. Apple car play is amazing, btw. I love how it has eco, normal & sport mode. To those people complaining about horsepower and not being able to get a v6 for the price of a 4 banger trust me just 4 cylinder in sport mode drives like a 6 in sport. I test drove both hardly any difference to be honest. No complaints best car I’ve ever owned. Could’ve bought any other “luxury car” but Camry all the way and can’t beat the reliability of Toyota! Favorite feature is how I can start my Camry from my phone since it’s linked to “Alexa” GREAT REVIEW Rubio and greeting you from the San Francisco Bay Area 👍🏻
Love my ’19 Camry XSE, but it does have a couple issues. The gas mileage isn’t even within 10mph from the advertised. Best mileage I’ve gotten was 25 on a ~100 mile freeway drive. They advertise highway as 42. While I know it’ll never get 42, I expected to get at least 30-32 on a free way trip. It also really needs Android Auto. Toyota Nav and GPS sucks
Nice car, my wife got one, I got a 2015 Charger R/T love it, if I have to buy a car other than a dodge, Camaro or mustang this is the car for me. this New Camry’s are awesome car. But one thing, how about some fog lights. The last time a talk about this I get blasted by one Youtuber explained to me that’s fog lights are for fog. That’s wasn’t my point, Almost every car now has fog lights, u just think that this Camery will look awesome with fog lights. Oh and one more this maybe a 320 horses will be a good idea. Is a cool nice car anyway.
I wish this car had a memory button for the seat setting. The rims around the tach meter and speedometer are shiny stainless steel. When the sun hits them, light reflection is a problem. Them pretty tires are so brittle. They get destroyed by potholes. Make sure to buy the warranty for rims and tires. The dash is not easy to clean. The texture of it is very rough. The glass part of the radio attracts so much dust.
I gave up for my manual Subaru Impreza and Honda Civic for a Toyota Camry and I really love it so far. I know it doesn’t have that quick response that I used for my Subaru, but I just hated the clutch going out on Subaru’s Since I replaced that twice in lest than 40K. Toyota and Honda are just reliable period. My Honda Civic had almost 300K didn’t replace clutch, only oil, break bads and CV joins nothing else.
Nice article, very detailed and never boring. You covered the XSE features very well. I was torn between the Camry SE and XSE and finally got the 2019 SE. It was so tempting to kick in the extra $4000 for the XSE plus another $400 for Wind Chill Pearl but I’m very happy with the Super White SE and actually prefer its 18″ wheels over the XSE’s 19″ wheels. Of course you can save maybe $1500 more going with the base L or LE but the SE is the low end of the sweet spot that gets even better with the XSE. I did look at the Honda Accord but think the Camry is a better car.
I know you are stating under $32k, but I’m sure you are just referring to price on window sticker. While shopping online, I see all the dealerships around me have internet pricing around $3k off sticker and some have another discount even on top of that, so alot of XSE 4 cyl are like $27-29k depending on packages on the vehicle.
After test driving a 2019 Honda Accord Sport… the next day my co worker showed up in one of these so I had to see what it was like.. and I was completely turned OFF. The interior is extremely cheap compared to the Accord and Toyota still makes ugly exteriors so Ill stick with purchasing the Accord 🙌
couple things, the pano roof is a expensive gimmick that will cause you headaches. Noise, heat transfer coming in, lower mpg, expensive repairs, all glass roof in accident equals NO GOOD. Try to find a XSE without it though. Toyota likes to suck the life out of you with extras. I have 2 dealerships around me and all have that shit two tone roof or panos. The red interior stuns, but betcha cant live with it each and every day. Its too in your face bright for the eyes imo……………wont age well at all That styling is to over the top
If I had the money I would buy one today. By the way, I just got off the phone with my salesman. He told me that my Bolt order was canceled. He said GM would not be building my no option Bolt. I know Bolt production is ending but this is ridiculous. This is truly unfortunate. Any insight you can offer on this development would be greatly appreciated. Gr8 vid as usual. 🚙 🇺🇸 🔌
I like both the monochromatic look and the black or carbon details. So hard to decide. Glad you pointed this out. I like the duckbill or smaller spoiler. Look at the red dip. NO Ferrari looks this good inside. Glad customer built it to his specs! Not a red car fan, but I don’t hate on this look! These articles are quick, informative and thorough. Excellent job. Keep them coming. 👍 Love the C8 🇺🇸
