Christmas in Britain has a rich history, customs, and traditions, with many traditions dating back to Queen Victoria’s reign. The Christian tradition of putting up decorations on Advent Sunday is prevalent, with the first Christmas tree being set up on 6 December. However, in Roman Catholic tradition, the Christmas tree is not traditionally placed on Christmas Day.
Christmas decorations are typically put up in late November or early December, usually coinciding with the start of Advent. In the UK, Christmas lights on the high street are typically switched on in November. Early December is a good time to get the festive feel, as office Christmas parties are kicking in and the streets are generally full of merry spirits.
By 1860, Christmas trees were popular among the middle classes, who would have a Christmas tree in their parlour or hall covered with candles, sweets, and other items. According to tradition, Christmas decorations should go up on the first day of Advent, which is the fourth Sunday before Christmas. A fifth of people, mostly women, begin planning for the holiday in November. Over half of British adults believe November is an appropriate time for shops to put up Christmas decorations and displays.
The last weekend of November has become an increasingly popular date to put the Christmas tree up, although it varies from family to family. To start decorating for Christmas, start on the first day of Advent, straight after Thanksgiving, on December 1st, and decorate in your own way.

Victoria and Albert were not the first royals to install a Christmas tree, as Queen Charlotte introduced the first evergreen tree to England in 1800. They are closely linked to the tradition because they were famously illustrated standing beside a decorated tree with their children. Victoria and Albert enjoyed turkey as a main meal, sharing mince pies, starters, soups, turkey, and chipolatas. They also indulged in plum pudding for dessert. The food was rich, incorporating beef, boar’s head, and cold meats.
The engraving was published in the 1840s and quickly gained national attention. The tradition of decorating a Christmas tree and enjoying turkey as a family meal continues to be a significant part of the royal tradition.

Why is everyone decorating for Christmas so early?
Psychoanalyst Steve McKeown and therapist Amy Morin have both found that putting up Christmas decorations early can extend excitement and connect people to their childhood memories. They believe that nostalgia helps link people to their personal past and helps them understand their identity. Research by Science Direct in 2020 also found that people who prepare early are seen as more personable, as decorations interacted with sociability in a complex but interpretable way.
In the absence of Christmas decorations, raters accurately distinguished between the homes of sociable and non-sociable residents, attributed to the relatively more “open” and “lived in” look of the sociable residents’ homes. This suggests that putting up Christmas decorations early can help people reconnect with their childhoods and maintain a sense of community.

Rebecca. My doctor always sends a prescription for acyclovir that I take 3 days before lip injections. I never get the lip sores. They have a cream acyclovir to put on sores that heals them up super fast and stops the itching and pain. Love you two ladies. Rebecca you always crack me up and make me smile. ❤
❤Rebecca, I love ❤️ you❗️You are so talented 💖 But I think 🤔 you need to have a softer feminine look. I don’t know if it’s my screen but you have a lot of harsh lines with you 💄 makeup and hair! I’m just trying to be honest, because I care about you! I miss your girly class look with longer hair! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Rebecca, the clear glasses you are wearing look really pretty on you! Fun article! A couple of years ago I went from having ALL the ornaments on my try to just using the silver, gold, green, brown, cream, neutral with warm clear ilghts. I also bought a new tree from Terrain, and it is much more beautiful and better space between branches, easier to handle by myself. It’s so beautiful.
Hy Rebecca and Sarah..can’t wait to see the decorations 🥰🥰 just a small detail on our beloved country Malta…it’s a small island in the Mediterranean sea..maybe someday you can come and visit us but recommend to come in summer if you love the sea of course. Many thanks for your magnificent design tips and much more thanks for the Christmas decorations as you’ve been my favorite decorator all these years. Much love from 🇲🇹Mirianna from Malta🇲🇹

I just love you so much. You’re the best decorator that I’ve ever followed and watched all your articles. I do have to say that I did copy your idea of the Polar Bear but my version was Melissa and Doug, which is a very inexpensive brand this only around $100 for my Polar Bear. The ones that you have if you ever decide that you wanna get rid of them I would love any of them and also reindeer 🙏❤️
Malta is an Island in the Mediterranean. In the Bible St. Paul lands on Malta after the ship he was on was shipwrecked on his way to Rome. On the island he was bitten by a poisonous snake. He shook it off into a fire. The Maltese people waited for him to die instantly but the snake bite had no effect on him. So maybe a bible story fits with Christmas.
Rebecca, I am wondering if you are going to put your O Holy Night metal wall, decor? That is one of my favorites…may I ask you kindly where I could purchase one? Someone left a comment in the chat about how to decorate basically on a budget. I would just go shopping for the affordable items and then whatever you pick out put together such as a swag with fairy lights or a tabletop Christmas tree with fairy lights. You can use ribbon or anything that’s inexpensive. Go to gift shops and try to find them. Be inspired by what you see. I always look for bargains. I had bought some decorative cotton rope of blue and brown that I decided to wrap around my faux evergreen wreath. Gives it a more country rustic look
Oh my gosh Rebecca, I am so excited to see your hair because you just did exactly what I was thinking of doing. I used to be blonde my entire life until I was 47 then I went dark but I am so tired of trying to cover those stinking grays it’s become a chore so I thought why not just go white as the snow. My grandmother had pure white hair, we’ll never know what my mom had because she had dark hair till the day she died and I thought white has to be so much easier to keep up with. My daughter gets married in October and then I think I’m going to do it after that. I don’t wanna make such a shocking change right before pictures for the wedding.
I Live at the border of Metairie & Kenner, I brought all of my Christmas Decorations in to the house because I was worried about my back building. We had around 9 inches of a rain, and very little damage as far as wind. I got my power back yesterday afternoon. First time that quick in a long time!!! I am looking for a new tree so I can’t wait to see your article about the trees!
Hi Rebecca and Sarah 😊 Love the articles. I’m from Georgia. About your lip blister, if you can get a doctor to write you a prescription for Valacyclovir, that will help that blister dryup. My husband take it daily. It is also used for shingles. Anyone, you are adorable. I love Christmas as much as you guys. Wish I could be there with y’all. Hope you see this. I’m perusal on Friday 😊
Rebecca you remind me of my friend Marla. She’s petite lively and always in motion. Well, we’re both getting older so maybe not as active as we used to be. Really enjoyed all the real moments in this article. Doorbells and phones ringing, swollen lip and sitting on the book. Can’t wait for more Christmas articles. I have white hair, I grew the color out after i took severance and retired early. I get tons of compliments on my hair. You will too.
You ladies are absolutely beautiful and such a joy to listen to. Rebekah, you look absolutely fantastic with your new hair color. It’s a keeper. I know you are honoring the Lord by making the Christmas season special and shine for the glory of Jesus Christ. 🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄
I know how it feels not to have all of your Christmas decorations, I am 99.9% sure that a family member got rid of mine. I had collected them for almost 30 years and they were beautiful, and worthy of passing on. The first few years after they went missing every time I thought about them I thought my broken heart would come crashing out of my chest some how! Now I decorate three huge candle sticks and they look nice on my Bombay chest, and that’s the extent of me decorating for Christmas.
