I started as a pitman for a excavating company in 2017, holding the laser for the operator digging basements. Within 6 months of being a professional labourer, was given opportunity to try the machines. I already had mini excavator experience from basement waterproofing work. Once they saw what I could do, pretty much been operating since. Now I’ve switched companies, joined local 793 with new company, making 37n change, 10% vac pay and great benefits/pension too.
Also a late bloomer. Started in HVAC industry as a glorified helper at 16$ an hour over 3 years ago. I’m now double that hourly wage as a Type 1,2,3, and Universal EPA certified technician. Get in and show up with the best attitude and be a sponge to info and technique. You will excel faster than you think. If your currently working at Walmart store/distribution center, ask to be trained on forklift, walkie stacker, and/or scissor lift. They’ll start with walkie stacker, few people get forklift and fewer get scissor lift training. That can get you into other jobs outside of Walmart. They know this so it might take some time to get that training.
Great article. I went to college for a year and just got tired of school. I got hired as a laborer for a residential construction company. It sounds like a terrible job but I actually loved it. I stayed with the same company for 10 years and learned new skills everyday. During the great recession many of us in the trades had to find new opportunities. I finished school and became a teacher. I enjoyed it but always missed the freedom of construction work. I left teaching prior to the pandemic and started my own home repair business. My only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner. My advice to anyone thinking about the trades would be to go into plumbing or become an electrician. You have to be smart and dedicated but they pay far better than many jobs that you pay tens of thousands of dollars for and spend years in school. Added bonus when you get tired of the rat race you can work for yourself :).
With your trade will come a lifestyle. 42 years in commercial HVAC&R and I have never missed a paycheck but there have been many 60+ hour weeks, worked 30 saturdays a year call outs in the middle of the night missed school plays, ball games and birthdays. Different trades put different demands on your time so choose wisely. So pick a lane, show up early, stay late, exceed the customers expectations and you will prosper. When us old timers see that you are serious, we will teach you and encourage you. But leave the goddamn cellphone in the truck!

I appreciate the honest candid view of things. I would also like to say that as someone who once did skilled trades as a high school dropout I now am a graduated engineer. I’ve been blessed but big life choices and lots of hard work can pay off. Not saying schools always the answer but most of us can do better than where we are.
