Can you mix modern and traditional art?

Art can greatly influence an aesthetic, guiding the choice of furniture, textiles, and accent colors. It is essential to stick to a single wall color or subtle palette, as both traditional and modern designs thrive with clean walls. Balance and symmetry are key, and modern and traditional art designs thrive in rooms that don’t feel off-center or overwhelmed. Art, furniture, and decor should be arranged within the landscape and center pieces in relation to each other.

Transitional decor allows for flexibility and growth, allowing for the incorporation of various styles, silhouettes, and shapes. It is a foundation aesthetic that allows for change without committing to a singular point of view. Transitional design has roots in traditional aesthetics but features fresher, updated silhouettes and softer palettes.

Contemporary and transitional design are distinct aesthetics. Contemporary interiors define a moment in time, while transitional interiors define timeless space and place. Transitional design combines modern and traditional styles, while contemporary homes combine multiple popular styles in an ever-evolving fashion. Erin Sander, an interior designer based in Dallas, believes that contemporary design borrows from many different styles and combines them all together, making it a current and on-trend style.

How to transition from traditional to modern decor?

To update a room, consider modern furniture, art, and area rugs, and avoid matching everything. Instead, create a coordinated decor of complimentary pieces. Start with an inspiration piece to guide your color palette, such as a vacation photo or favorite scarf or pillow. If you don’t have an inspiration piece, consider your closet colors. Art can make a statement and provide a focal point, so switch from collage walls with smaller framed photos and decor pieces to one large, canvas-mounted art piece when updating your home from traditional to contemporary.

  • I want to make the whole house traditional but my husband wont let me. He likes industrial. But I find traditional the most cosy of al interior design styles. Update: sorry I ment classic, I want to make our home in the classic design style, with the richer colours, not neutrals, I dont like neutrals. I got the two mixed up 🙂

  • That’s my living room @8:44! So I can now name my design style. Definitely “Transitional.” I have many quality mid century modern pieces found on Craigslist that I use in the same room as an item two that I received from my grandparents. I keep the wood tones consistent which creates a seamless look.
