To create a Zen-inspired bedroom, consider using soft, natural colors and minimal furniture. In a Japanese bedroom, balance, openness, and stability are crucial, so keep your furniture minimal and low to the ground. Natural light is the best light source for a Zen-styled home.

What is a traditional Japanese bedroom called?
A washitsu, or “Japanese-style room(s)”, is a traditional Japanese room with traditional tatami flooring. It typically has sliding doors ( fusuma) and may have shōji or a tokonoma for guests. Traditionally, most Japanese dwellings had washitsu-style rooms, but modern Japanese houses often have only one washitsu for entertaining guests and most rooms are Western-style. Many new construction Japanese apartments have no washitsu at all, instead using linoleum or hardwood floors.
The size of a washitsu is measured by the number of tatami mats, which range from 1. 5 m 2 to 1. 8 m 2. Typical room sizes are six or eight tatami mats in a private home, or half-sized mats in a 4. 5-tatami room.
How to design a Japanese style room?
Japandi design, a serene aesthetic combining Japanese and Scandinavian styles, is gaining popularity in the US. This approach encourages relaxation at home by blending the cultural ethos of both regions into one technique. Japanese design is grounded in simplicity and a connection to nature, featuring clean lines, rough-hewn textures, a neutral palette, and minimal styling. Harmony is key, with complementary shades and textures being emphasized. Masa Kaneko of Crafits Design Studio and Ippin Project in Brooklyn, NY, emphasizes simplicity as a basic aesthetic sense related to design, architecture, products, and fashion.
Contrary to Western beliefs, Japanese designs “prefer less decoration” and promote removing distracting elements. In essence, Japanese interior design abides by the rule that less is more, incorporating natural materials and textures, a neutral color palette, and a focus on simplicity.
What are the colors of Japanese bedrooms?
Japanese interior design is known for its minimalism, functionality, and appreciation for nature. The classic black and white color scheme emphasizes the beauty of natural materials like wood and bamboo, while earthy tones like beige, brown, and grey create a calming atmosphere. The concept of “ma”, or the space between objects, is crucial in creating balance and harmony. Natural materials like wood, bamboo, and paper are often left in their natural state, highlighting their inherent beauty and imperfections. Japanese furniture is typically low to the ground, with clean lines and simple forms.
What color is sacred in Japan?
The color white, or shiro, is a sacred symbol of the gods and spiritual purity in Japan. The Emperor of Japan traditionally wears white clothes for Shinto rituals, and a bride’s dress and head covering are white. White also signifies death in Buddhism, and samurai suicide is performed with white and black stripes in funeral zones. Black, or kuro, is a masculine color used for samurai attire and the boys’ festival Kodomo-no-hi. Shinto priests wear black caps as a symbol of enlightenment.
Red, or aka, is popular in Japan, with many shrines and temples being red. Red was once seen as a way to scare away evil spirits, and it is now used in Shinto priests’ attire and on sculptures. Red is also used in festivals, with festival zones marked by curtains with red and white stripes. In Kabuki theater performances, red stripes on actors’ faces symbolize justice.
What is the Japanese bedroom theory?
Japanese interior design is based on five principles: minimalism, simplicity, natural materials, and Zen influence. Minimalism involves decluttering spaces to create a calm atmosphere, while natural materials like wood, bamboo, and rice paper infuse warmth and texture. Zen philosophy, a cornerstone of modern Japanese design, transforms homes into sanctuaries of peace and relaxation. Research shows that embracing Zen can improve health, happiness, and energy levels, making it a powerful tool in creating a harmonious and comfortable living space.
Do Japanese husband and wife sleep separately?
Japanese couples often choose to sleep separately due to different work schedules, as waking up late or leaving early doesn’t provide good quality rest. To ensure undisturbed and healthier sleep, couples should choose to sleep in different rooms. Japanese mothers sleep with their children, and fathers must decide whether to share the same bed or go to a different room. Co-sleeping can help parents and children get more restful sleep, maintain stable temperatures and heart rates, and reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome. This contributes to better self-esteem, faster independence, and better academic performance.
Japanese couples value their sleep and don’t want to be disturbed while sleeping, which means they don’t need snoring, restless sleep, or kicking. Despite not having the opportunity to sleep in different rooms, Japanese couples still wish they could get their beauty sleep.
Is sleeping on tatami healthy?
Tatami mattresses are a type of Japanese bedding that consist of a natural, hand-woven straw mat placed on the floor. They are known for their comfort, support, and ability to promote good posture and reduce pressure points during sleep. The firm yet yielding surface of a tatami mattress helps align the spine properly, leading to a more restful and rejuvenating sleep experience. The straw mat, known as “tatami”, offers a firm yet comfortable surface that conforms to the body’s natural shape, making it an ideal choice for those seeking a comfortable and supportive sleep.
What is traditional Japanese interior design?
The Japanese Interior Design Style, rooted in its culture and traditions, is often associated with Scandinavian design due to their similarities. The Japanese design language reflects a deeper philosophical understanding and a sensuous, playful, and thoughtful expression. Wabi-Sabi aims to create Zen through seven design principles, including Kanso, which emphasizes using simplistic elements in spaces that are easy to find, use, maintain, and replace. Zen symbolizes balance, which can be established in irregularity, and Fukinsei represents balanced asymmetry, resembling an oxymoron in harmony.

I think air nomads were based on Shaolin and Tibetan Monks, but the person they casted for the live action Netflix series, Gordon Cormier, is Filipino-Canadian. He looked the part though. The rest of the air nomad casts such as Gyatso and the other monks look East asian. You can justify your rug because Gordon is brown! In the anime Ang looks white but he’s just pale lol edit: I mean cartoon!
I said it when I saw your IG stories at the time and I’ll say it again – I don’t know how you didn’t pass out when that spider appeared 😂😩 Love the room and love the shape of that mirror. Sooo inspired to get a custom rug now!❤ Also – I vote for 2 posters definitely! Potentially cardcaptor sakura and Kiki?
Hi Sundai! The struggle is real to transform a room, LOL! OMG that spider was big as a dinner plate, dang!! 😂 Duchy said I’m outta here! Maybe you can have your bed frame made if you can’t find one. I love Crunchyroll, I stream it too! The mirror is gorgeous, I love the shape. If it’s cloth around the edges use Scotch Guard to protect the fabric. Test a small area first though before applying all over. I love the Avatar rug, girl! The air purifier/table/charge is genius! Neutral color pallets are the best and most aesthetic. Two posters would be nice one the wall!
2:44 – We have dock spiders here so we actually have to spray for them sometimes if they’re really bad. They’re so big but completely harmless. I highly recommend a spider catcher so you can drop it outside (am not brave enough – but it’s an option). I have to literally stay in another room if there’s a wasp/hornet because I’m allergic.
I love me some Sundai!!! You’re awesome love! One thing I will say love, is that there is extraordinary power in the tounge. I would stop claiming sickness, believe me I know what it is to be sick, but a great deal of my healing came from me speaking health over my life and not giving me being sick so much power by constantly speaking it and claiming sickness. God Bless you love and whatever it is I claim healing and excellent health for your life!❤🫰🏾🙏🏽
This is one of those times when I’m grateful to have a hoover (vacuum). I own a spider catcher too, but that big a spider. Nope needs hoovering. Then you’ll be at peace. Edit: this article made me lol. It’s such fun seeing other people expressing the same exasperations I have with putting things together at times. But the outcome was super cool! Thank you. And love the ideas, gonna nick some.
The way I’d just burn the house down if a spider that huge was up in my room. My cats do the same thing we have huge spiders here even small ones when my brother isn’t around I get my cat and the cat just swats it and runs off. WHY DO YOU MAKE IT ANGRY AND LEAVE !! Love the room makeover so pretty. I’m in the middle of fixing my room up, but I’m dealing with heat and mosquitos makes it so damn hard to do anything creative.
Girl you are so brave!! I would have destroyed the whole room, slamming a broom into everything, then set it on fire, and ran to the neighbor’s for help! 😂😂😂 I love gardening and plants and can take a breadth and ignore them outside, BUT when they come into MY SPACE…I lose my d*mn mind!!😅 Oh and the room is beautiful by the way!!🎉
You need one of those hand vacuums with the extender that how I suck up spiders. Lolll it just if they are big I literally wait weeks until they are dead to empty the container and cover the open so there’s no way they can crawl out. I have the black + decker pet handheld. Just aim and suck those suckers out of yo life!
Sundai Puff is getting so big ❤and duchess left you to take care of the spider 🕷️ by yourself 😅 I would be freaking out i hate spiders 😮 your room looks so nice girl take care sending lots of prayers for you and your sweet family take care your awesome ❤🙏 wishing your sweet Mom a Happy Mother’s Day ❤🙏
Oh, my God that was a huge ass spider. Thank goodness I have an electric fly swatter. I remember one time I had to kill big spider with my electric fly swatter but was scared that it would get away but luckily it didn’t and end up getting zapped. I didn’t want to pick it up so I use my vacuum and dumped it in the trash.
Girl, I love that table you got because it’s an air purifier. I know, I need to get Something for my house too I got 2 cats and a dog and it gets dusty in here very interested in that and I do got to say, I love everything that you add it, especially that mirror I love the design of it, it’s not your ordinary square mirror. Good job love it…👍👍 And we could never get enough of your kitties. They’re so cute….🐈🐈
See I might be moving to Japan soon and if I see any of those insects you be posting I’m going to cry so bad…like does Raid even work on them? Will that anger them even more? Then if I’m screaming in my quiet building I’m going to be labeled as the typical noisy foreigner…like neighbors please this is a cry for help🤣😂🥲
🫨I told you to screen ALL your windows and doors AND windows, spray your ENTIRE house perimeter, perimeters of ALL rooms, ALL door & window frames EVERY MONTH! GIRL!!! 😅 After I had a brown recluse bight me between the booty cheek…I don’t play. NOTE: If you want your Air BnB to be successful you NEED to do the same there as well!!!
Sundai, I have that kind of bed and I am so happy with it. I bought it online. It is from Karup Design, there is one model kind of combo with tatami mats on the top and then you put their futon above. They sell all of that and you can choose your futon style and softness. I am not sponsored btw, but I am in love with that 😂
when you have an insect spray them with that foam bath cleaner they go to glory instantly Then for the mirror put that fabric seal stuff on it and it will coat it so the cats wont bother it but it stinks very badly and will still get dirty. the only other thing you can do for the mirror is paint the cloth literally
When you be dealing with them Huntsman 🤣💀…. I DO NOT LIKE THINGS WITH LOTS OF LEGS! Is that the only kind of spider in Japan?! I feel like that’s the only spider I see looking at Japan You Tube! I bet you that thing woke you out of your sleep just by walking! And ya’ll be killing me with them knee strong beds!
For that mirror – textile/fabric impregnation would work or wax. Wax will be more like a layer on top while impregnation will go deeper in the fabric 🙂 And that type of spider will do more good than bad in your home. They keep other pests away☺️ harmless to humans and very useful in controlling mosquito and cockroach numbers. Friendly neighbourhood spider!😜
