What are the principles of rustic design?

Rustic interior design is a natural, rough, aged, and casual style that originated organically and evokes a sense of past times when people repurposed items or built them from scratch. It is characterized by its emphasis on rugged, natural beauty and often consists of woven, raw wood, wooden and antique furniture, textured, organic textiles, and non-shiny metal.

To create a rustic interior, one can strip the home back to its original features, incorporate large, solid pieces of furniture, and use textured, organic textiles. • Loved this article! This is my style. I had only neutral colors of taupe and ivory throughout my home a few years ago, adding seasonal touches with pillows, florals and candles, then started adding some black accessories to ground things. I bought a large abstract canvas print with colors of caramel, rust, ivory, charcoal gray and black (reminding me of the natural colors of stone) to hang above my sofa. I have expanded my colors to include these and love it. I’ve always loved natural elements of plants, baskets, stones, worn wood and rustic pottery paired with brass metal.

  • I feel like these looks can be implemented in most American ranch and bungalow homes. We have a basic 1980s box and we are covering the popcorn ceiling in wood planks and adding arches. When we can afford it, we will be replacing all the windows with black colonial windows (right now it’s all bubble glass and grout) and we painted all the walls a creamy white. We are also using a lot of thrifted wood and metal furniture in the house and will be going with stone and Spanish tile backsplashes.
