To achieve a dream DIY manicure, you will need a CND Shellac base coat, top coat, color of choice, UV LED gel and shellac nail polish curling lamp, cleanup brush, and polish remover. Acrylic nails can be created at home using acrylic powder, which is activated with the monomer to mold and form an acrylic nail. The EMA monomer is the liquid used to create the nail.
To maintain the beauty of artificial nails at home, you can buy a nail fill kit from a beauty supply store or pick up the necessary tools. A nail file and buffer are essential for shaping your nails and creating a smooth surface for the acrylic to adhere to. Nail primer and dehydrator are crucial for preparing your nails and ensuring they are ready for the acrylic to adhere.
In the age of DIY, you don’t have to spend a fortune at the nail salon to get professional-looking manis and pedis. Acrylic manicures help add structure and longevity to any nail look. To fill your nails at home, remove old paint and apply new layers of primer and paint. Start by rubbing off old paint with nail polish.
There are two main types of nail files: emery boards and glass files. Either works for at-home gel manicures. In summary, achieving a professional-looking manicure at home doesn’t require expensive salon services, and DIY nail fill kits can be a cost-effective and straightforward option for both beginners and professionals.
📹 A Beginner’s Guide to Perfect Nail Fills
If you’re struggling with your fills- this video is for you! Today Greg explains how finger angle, pearl size and technique all come …
What’s the difference between a fill and a full set nails?
A fill is a nail treatment that involves removing the grown-out portion of a manicure, preparing the nails, and filling it with a new manicure. This method prevents overprepping the natural nail bed, which can cause it to feel weak and flimsy. Gel manicures, dip manicures, and press ons can damage the natural nail bed by peeling off the gel, ripping off press ons, filing, or buffing too much. Fills leave 10-20 of the gel manicure on the nails at all times, creating a strong protective layer on the natural nails. This prevents damage to the gel layer, allowing the nails to grow and not break. Fills are a popular choice for those who want to maintain their nails’ health and appearance.
What is the difference between gel fill and acrylic fill?
Acrylic manicures are more expensive initially but can be more cost-efficient over time. They can be filled to prolong their lifespan, costing $20 to $40 per fill. Gel nails require regular redening to maintain their appearance. The choice between a gel manicure and acrylics depends on factors like durability, dramatic length, and nail health. Acrylics are ideal for long, elaborate designs, while gel manicures offer a more natural look and are less damaging. Gel polish, with its high-shine finish and less chipping, may be more suitable for some individuals.
What can I use instead of a nail file?
To trim nails without a nail file, avoid biting your nails as it can weaken the nail edge and make it more likely to break. Avoid using power tools like grinders or belt sanders, as they can be harmful and can cut into your nail bed, damage your finger, or hurt your hand. Instead, use tile grout or the emery board-like part of a matchbook. Remember to always wear a nail file when trimming nails.
What do they use for full set nails?
Acrylic overlays are popular nail extensions that add length or a natural look to natural nails. They are designed to protect natural nails from elements, prolong the longevity of the color, and provide a fun and stylish shape. They are easy to shape and can be painted with polish for a polished appearance. Acrylic overlays are less expensive than other artificial nails, making them a great choice for those looking to add extra flair to their nails.
They are also a great option for those looking to add a fun and stylish touch to their nails, while also protecting them from everyday wear and tears. Overall, acrylic overlays are a great way to add a touch of flair to your natural nails.
What can I use instead of full set nails?
Dip powder, also referred to as SNS, represents a novel manicure system that effectively supplants the conventional use of acrylic nails. This innovative approach involves dipping or brushing the nails in a fine-colored powder, effectively replacing the need for acrylic nails. Subsequently, a clear sealant is applied to the surface to provide a protective coating. The product is suitable for simple manicures and can be used for nail extensions with nail tips. The application of dip powder is a relatively rapid and straightforward process, and it is perceived to be a more hygienic alternative to acrylic nails due to the absence of harsh chemicals.
Can you infill gel nails at home?
Gel nails can be filled using Mylee’s Builder Gel, Magic Extender Gel, or Fix ‘N’ Flash Tips as a base. However, gel nail polish needs to be removed completely before applying a new layer. Infilling gel nails saves time and money by filling in nail growth with new gel, saving the product. It is crucial to follow the infilling process correctly to ensure a clean gel mani that lasts for up to three weeks before needing to be infilled or removed. This method is particularly useful when your gel mani has grown out and needs a refreshing touch.
How to do a gel full set at home?
To create gel nails at home, follow these 8 easy steps: 1) Prep your nails, 2) Push your cuticles back, 3) Buff your nails, 4) Wipe your nails with rubbing alcohol, 5) Apply Gel Base Coat, 6) Apply Gel Polish, 7) Apply Gel Top Coat, 8) Apply cuticle oil. This DIY nail art is similar to salon-style work, but requires the right equipment and patience to learn. It’s an enjoyable and effective way to create your own gel nails.
What is a good alternative to acrylic?
The most durable alternatives to acrylic nails are dip powder, poly gel, hard gel, and soft gels, with a reported wear time of up to four weeks. The least durable option is that of press-on nails, which have a lifespan of only a few days to a couple of weeks. Polygel and builder gel are optimal for the creation of three-dimensional nail art.
What do I need to fill my nails at home?
To fill your nails, mix acrylic liquid and powder in a small dish. Dip an acrylic nail brush into the liquid and dab it into the powder, repeating this process 4 to 5 times. Apply the mixture to the middle of your natural nail, tapping it evenly across the nail. Use the sides to fill in corners and near the cuticle. Pull the excess mixture down the nail to smoothly cover the existing nail. If too much acrylic mixture is applied, use a cotton swab with nail polish remover to wipe it away and try again.
Is a fill cheaper than a full set?
Acrylic nails are a popular beauty trend, offering length, strength, and a canvas for stunning nail art. They can be expensive, with refills typically costing between $15 and $30, depending on factors like location, expertise, and design complexity. Regular maintenance is crucial to prevent nail infections and promote the longevity of acrylic nails. Whether you visit a salon or DIY, understanding the costs associated with acrylic nails is essential.
A salon typically charges $30 to $60 for a basic set of acrylic nails, depending on factors like location, expertise, and design complexity. Regular maintenance helps maintain the nails’ appearance, prevents infections, and promotes the longevity of the acrylics. Understanding these costs and hidden expenses can help you get the best value for your investment in acrylic nails.
What to use instead of monomer for acrylic nails?
Monomer liquid is a crucial component in nail art, allowing users to customize their nails’ color, finish, shape, and length. However, when monomer liquid runs out, it can be a disaster. To avoid this, there are several alternatives, such as using polyester resin, rubbing alcohol, dip powder activator, dip nail powder method, or pressing on nails. These alternatives can help maintain the quality of the nail art and ensure that the nails are ready for the next event or big event.

New to Acrylic or need a refresher? Here at Coscelia Nail Art, we love to educate on the products and industry we love!
Thank you so much for sharing your wealth of knowledge with the public, PARTICULARLY during the pandemic! Many of us still wanted beautiful nails, many of us may even use doing our nails & nail art as a way to cope, & I’m so grateful for the wonderful teachers like you, who are so generous with that knowledge! I love YN Products too!
When you pulled the acrylic forward on the left side there was a small gap between the acrylic & sidewall. After you were done filing the gap was gone. I have this problem almost every time I do a fill. But after I file the gap is still there. How do you make it look blended when there was no acrylic applied in that small gap?
My problem is that I tend to be such a perfectionist when it comes to the cuticle edge…..I really need to work on this! I have switched from using tips to using forms and I LOVE IT! My nails underneath feel so good…..they feel really natural….when I wore tips my fingernails actually hurt, but now that I have a set on and I used forms, I am not experiencing that pain at all. I am so thankful to you Greg, for being such a great teacher and not only explaining but showing how it’s done. I’m a visual learner so it helps tremendously to see how it is actually done. Thanks Greg!
Oh my god I am so thankful I have found your website. I’ve been trying to do my own acrylics for years now but no matter how many tutorials I watch, I just can’t seem to get the hang of filling in my nails. I was going to go to a salon and get them filled but instead followed this article and my nails look so good!! I cannot thank you enough Greg!
When I was 21 I took cosmetology class to learn how to do nails, and I used to do acrylics for myself and for my grandmother I did not have any experience at all. Our nails were extremely messy, but I was learning. I think it’s a perfect idea. Spending money every single month. I want to learn how to do that. In 2020 during Covid, I learn how to do regular gel nails. Every month I do my grandmother‘s manicure in gel. I do my own gel pedicure just to save money, and spend $30 every month for my refills and gel manicure.
Before I finish perusal, just want to ask & share, so one of my acrylics broke off and I just reshaped my nails & I cheated, I used a tip with clear dip for foundation until my fresh acrylic comes. I’m not professional so, I’d like to know if I have to remove all of the dip and start w the tip and acrylic? Or can I keep the dip tip thing and add the apex on top of the “fake it til I make it ” mail?
