Large windows can transform the exterior of your home, improving views and making it lighter and brighter. Other tips to increase kerb appeal include cleaning the exterior walls, power washing your driveway, installing outdoor lighting, trimming hedges, and clearing up clutter. Replacing roof tiles is another important step to improve the appearance of your home. Tiles missing or growing moss can make your house look run-down.

Slate can turn a tired roof into a beautiful thing, but it’s essential to consult a roofing specialist and ensure it works with the existing building. How to make the exterior of a house look mid century modern?

Mid-Century Modern design is characterized by the use of natural materials like wood, stone, and glass in the exterior of homes. This creates a warm and inviting atmosphere, with wood siding, stone accents, and large glass windows. Flat or slightly sloped roofs are common, and if your current roofline doesn’t match this style, consult a contractor for a modification. Bold, contrasting colors are often used in Mid-Century Modern homes, with vibrant door colors like turquoise or mustard yellow and neutral tones like white, beige, or gray complementing the bright accent color.

Curb appeal can be enhanced by a few simple updates to your home’s exterior. Paint a bold front door, plant colorful pots, build a great fence, spray away grime, show off your home, wow with window boxes, design a pretty pathway, and grow the good vines. There’s no need for a “For Sale” sign in your yard to consider investing in projects to increase the curb appeal value of your home. Adding fresh accents like throw pillows for deck chairs or hanging plants can offer a significant bang for your buck and provide a thrill every time you pull into the driveway.

Repainting is not a significant financial investment and is relatively easy to do. For a more conservative approach, choose a historic color typical for the area or neighborhood, such as an almost-black Charleston green or a soft coastal blue. Going bold is fun too, with yellow with a gold or mustard tone being a popular choice. A raspberry shade on a white house is also a favorite color.

  • First I’m so happy I got a chance to get caught up on your articles. I started a new job a few months ago in spray foam installation and I have been so busy! I remember when you first got this house from perusal Home and Family and you and Paige did the portable closet from pipes and plywood. I remember thinking your house was so traditional cute but that it wasn’t what I pictured as your style!! Lol NOW THIS IS YOUR HOME!! ITS SO GOOD!! I’M SO HAPPY FOR YOU!!! Girl I don’t even know where to start the colors! the fence! The furniture!! And OMG SHIRLEY KNOWS HER ISSHHHH!!! How lucky to be able to pick her brain for advice!! Ok I’m done with my freak out. lol It’s just so good!!! I’m gonna try my best not to get behind on your articles! Especially if this is what I’ve been missing!

  • The renovation inside and out is amazing! I’m not such a big fan of a completely open floor plan. I don’t like seeing the kitchen mess while eating dinner. I say that because my husband is a chef and uses almost everything in the kitchen to make dinner each night! Yours looks beautiful and am so happy for you that it suits your needs. The front and backyards are beautiful and I completely understand how the renovations boosted the value of your home. Congratulations!

  • Brava! Quite the transformation…both in the interior & exterior🎉! It went from blah to brilliant. 🤩 One of the 🏡H&G🌿 websites truly ought to snap you up! Your sexy 🖤 black & timber🪵mod farmhouse🐮 makes a wonderfully fresh statement. 🥰Love an extended shaded porch☀️! Outstanding finishes, furnishings & overall scheme.👏 👏👏 Everything in our state is extra 🤑costly, so I understand wanting to save💰. Sorry your experience turned into a nightmare🤦‍♀️, but happy you were able to move through it. 🧏‍♀️Appreciate your transparency. 🦋Shirley Bovshow is another LA treasure🎁. • Your contractor woes are super relatable. When we first bought our house, we wanted some flooring done and hired someone through a flooring store. He was licensed but he had all his relatives working for him and they weren’t terribly skilled. They left the job unfinished. We’d already paid for the materials, but not the labor. He just kept avoiding our calls, meanwhile our house was ripped apart and one whole floor was unusable. In the end we went to the floor store and they gave us his wife’s phone number. We called her (turned out the relatives were hers and she felt bad about the mess they’d made). The original guy turned up the next day and finished the job in one day. From then on, we have been super careful who we hired to work on our home.

  • Gorgeous porch furniture and I’m so glad that you love your makeover. It makes me happy to see you so excited. Alas, I’m not a fan of the new fence, it’s all too industrial looking for my taste. I live in the Med and we are a fan of white. White deflects the heat so a black house would be a definite no no in our hot climate. Thanks for the article, it was inspiring nevertheless. ❣❣❣

  • So many of us have had the bad contractgor experiemce; unfortunately. I had a HVAC guy just totally back out of things promised, did a sloppy job, and wont return calls to do the warranty work i was promised. I opened a complaint with BBB, but that is a complete waste of time. It has been 2 years, but thank you so much for this info on how to properly follow suit. I am absolutely moving forward with opening a complaint with the dept of licensing.

  • THIS. O. M. G!! Absolutely fabulous article with lots of tips and ideas as well as some phenomenal companies! Those rockers – holy guacamole, man! We live in Costa Rica and are just about to start our home build in the mountains. We’ve been thinking about the traditional leather-back CR tickets but those chairs from Masaya Co. are so so lovely. Totally understand your obsession with them! Gonna look up their website and see about having them shipped to Costa Rica. Thanks so much for sharing!!

  • 🤭rly the Reno that you have accomplished on your home is gorgeous… Not to be a downer, please tell me you installed motion sensor lights outside? Sharrah & Tyler on @kinwoven home completed an outdoor project & pieces were stolen!! You’ve already had an expensive lesson learned!! Don’t want it to continue🤗😘

  • Absolutely a fabulous before and after🖤🤍🖤🤎🤍🤎 It’s a welcoming design 🖤 I love black and those rockers are a work of art❤️ Everything is so stunning!! Sorry you got mixed up with a bad contractor 😬🥺😖 My hubby was a contractor for over 20 years and he ended up fixing a lot of jobs other didn’t do correctly. Sad what some will try and pass off like that. Thankfully it looks like the new guys did a fabulous job!! Enjoy all that peaceful beauty😍

  • I am so freaking jealous of your talent don’t get me wrong I have my own but I don’t have a creative bone in my body I am a math and science mind with a degree in animal science I have horses cattle chickens I live on a ranch I have a huge garden for edibles only I don’t plant anything that isn’t an edible screw Monsanto but my flowerbeds in the front of the house I stripped and have been staring at it for months because I’m at a complete loss what to do I don’t have a wonderful friend as a YouTuber who can tell me what to do and if I ever get your address say goodbye to those chairs lol my problem is the animals cost so much to feed and take care of I mean thousands a month that I don’t leave money over for the kind of renovations that you have done I build stalls and places for the animals and fences don’t get me wrong we are self sustaining and I don’t regret my life but that is so freaking beautiful I wish you would help me with mine your talent is beyond amazing you will be a household name one day I know it keep at it girl I’m 66 years old my daughter is 37 and she has talent that is endless in another area but I can’t get enough of your articles and I can’t wear the stuff you wear you also have a model figure why don’t you do some stuff for my age group I’ve said this before I also am very Marylin Monroeish I love your stuff but I can’t wear it I can embellish things and so basic things but you really have it all beauty talent I know your life isn’t perfect nobody’s is but if I could go back I want to be you lol

  • I downloaded Canva to play around with a few ideas my husband and I are considering for our house, but I’m not very savvy with it. How did you change exterior colors so flawlessly with your home’s photos? I think I’ve been doing it the hard way and it looks like a cut/paste collage a 5th grader would do.

  • It’s really cool how your house is normal. Not like other diy fashion websites with massive 3000 square foot marble everything walk in closet the size of my master bedroom houses. So refreshingly relatable. Not like “heres how to score deals from Walmart brought to you from my closet in my million dollar house”
