Ways To Create A Cozy Little Patio Area?

To make a small patio look bigger, consider using corners and surfaces as much as possible. Potted plants can be perfect additions to corners, while hanging plants and string lights can create vertical space. Consider adding curtains for added privacy and verticality. Add enough seating to make the space feel like a destination for family members to gather and socialize.

To make a small patio into an alcove, provide a visual focus, such as a small statue or sculptural tree. A neutral small patio can be created by using light gray stone pavers to ground it and assembling a wooden structure over it. Create a safe, level patio by first things first, if using pavers, tiles, and other materials.

Incorporate contrasting shades, such as black and white, to frame a small patio. Black columns and soffits contrast the white brick in this home. Choose key items that fit the space and accessorize with decor to enhance those pieces. Make use of corners and surfaces as much as possible, and incorporate shaded seating.

Embrace the evolution of outdoor spaces through refining and updating. Create shaded seating, go all in with one material, make it functional, bring in airy furnishings, and accent your angles. Small bricks or river-run pebbles can make a petite patio look nicer, while larger bluestone pavers can be used for a grander outdoor space. Turn even the smallest terrace into an outdoor oasis with a chic patio bistro set and a trellis outfitted with string lights for extra privacy and ambiance.

How do I layout my patio?

To create a spacious outdoor space, place the longest piece of furniture along the longest wall or edge, facing the focal point. This will anchor the area and encourage guests to sit and chat. Cluster pieces into functional spaces based on their intended use, such as a dining set or seating around a fire feature. Finally, bring a resort-style feel to the backyard with convenience pieces like side tables and ottomans, providing guests with places to set down drinks, plates, and bags.

How do I plan a patio layout?

When designing a patio, consider the following eight factors: determining the purpose of the patio, designing around other backyard features, creating an indoor-outdoor connection, choosing the right patio flooring, considering a patio or deck railing, considering sun and shade, and coordinating with your home’s architectural style.

Determine the purpose of your patio by considering its location, size, shape, and layout. For example, a small private patio should include privacy features and ample space for lounge chairs, while a large backyard deck should accommodate guests and have zones for dining, lounging, and entertaining.

Design around other backyard features, such as trees, pools, and views, to create a cohesive feel and take full advantage of your property. Respect critical root zones and incorporate mature trees into your design, as many cities have tree integration policies that prohibit cutting down mature trees.

Can you lay a patio directly on soil?

Laying paving on soil can be a simple and effective process, provided the right knowledge, materials, and tools are used. Most leading paving manufacturers recommend laying paving on a combination of compacted soil with an MOT Type 1 sub-base. A well-laid patio can enhance the appearance of your outdoor area and make it more functional, providing a space for activities like barbeques, outdoor dining, or lounging. It is not necessary to create a concrete foundation for paving, as the foundation should be strong and durable.

This blog post will guide you through the steps of laying paving on soil, from preparing the site to laying the pavers and finishing the job. By the end of the post, you will have the knowledge to complete a paving project that will stand the test of time.

Is a 10×10 patio too small?

A 10×10 patio can comfortably accommodate up to four people for relaxation around a dining table or a fire pit. The size depends on the space and family size, so choose furniture that is comfortable but compact. Decorate the small patio with outdoor rugs, lighting, plants, and water features. Create an al fresco spot with a table and chairs, install a built-in or portable fire pit area for roasting marshmallows, or create a conversation area with loveseats or armchairs and a coffee table or side tables for an all-purpose gathering and retreat.

Design small patios to be adapted to specific uses, such as a fire pit conversation area or outdoor dining space. Ensure that the space works with the style of your home and landscaping, whether it’s a back patio for a small yard or part of a larger outdoor space.

How to make a patio look nice?

Interior designer Tori Rubinson suggests filling planters with low-maintenance plants, succulents, or herbs to refresh outdoor spaces. She also suggests upgrading an outdoor rug, mixing and matching dining chairs, creating a canopy bed, creating a conversation space, stringing up lights, setting the table, using artificial grass between paving, painting the patio, and installing artificial grass between paving. Designer Lauren Shaver creates a “block print” design for a simple rug, while designer Mary Patton adds color to a wooden dining table with two bright yellow wrought iron chairs.

What is a good size for a small patio?

For a 4th of July bash, it’s essential to have a patio and adjacent spaces that offer at least 25-30 square feet per person. A standard patio should be around 400 square feet, with spaces like a deck or open lawn for people to mingle. The size and amenities should be considered for each gathering type, including ages and interests. When a primo patio space is established, it’s likely to attract more friends and family. The goal is to make your patio the envy of the neighborhood.

How do I maximize space on a small patio?

Small patios can be a charming and usable outdoor space, especially when combined with the right furnishings, accents, and lighting. Hanging weather-resistant outdoor fabric like Sunbrella can create privacy and reduce direct sunlight while enhancing the aesthetic appeal of your small patio. Install an outdoor curtain rod and use the drapes to designate an entertaining or conversation zone on your back porch or patio. This will make your space look deceptively large and ready for barbecues, game nights, bonfires, and more.

Add a mirror to your home’s exterior to reflect sunlight and make your outdoor space feel more open. If your patio or deck is uncovered, choose a garden mirror made with materials that can withstand the elements but don’t hang it in direct sunlight. Mount this outdoor accent using wood shims and a crafts store mirror. This DIY mirror can be made with wood shims and a crafts store mirror, adding vertical decorating space above the potting bench to enhance your patio design style.

How to layout a small patio?

To choose the right patio furniture for your small space, consider the following tips:

  1. Measure your space and check the size measurements of the furniture before making a purchase.
  2. Plan your patio layout by sketching it out and placing furniture along the edges of the patio, making room for a coffee table and rug in the middle.
  3. Choose furniture that is easily moved to experiment with the layout and has multiple functions, such as a floor ottoman for extra seating or a footrest.
  4. Don’t be afraid to move furniture around once placed on the patio.
  5. Consider using metal farmhouse benches from the Better Homes and Gardens collection at Walmart, which provide ample seating and are weather-proof and waterproof, essential for the Seattle climate.

If your small patio needs a major facelift, start from scratch with these steps:

  1. Measure your space and check the size measurements of the furniture before making your purchase.
  2. Plan your layout by placing furniture along the edges of the patio, making room for a coffee table and rug in the middle.
  3. Enjoy the process of choosing the right patio furniture for your space.

How do you lay a patio for beginners?

The construction of a patio can be achieved in six straightforward steps. The initial step is to excavate the area designated for the patio to a depth of 150mm. This is followed by the placement of a 100mm compacted sub-base. The next step is to cover the sub-base with a 40mm concrete mix. The paving slabs are then laid at a depth of 15mm. After this, the slabs are left to set for 24 hours. Finally, any gaps between the slabs are filled with concrete mix.

  • So glad I clicked on your article, your website name got my attention as I thought it might be something to do with Canterbury England which I love. But within minutes I felt like I already knew you. All of your tastes and ideas are exactly what I like. You have no idea how much inspiration and motivation you have given me with this article, as I am super stressed at how to make over my patio and backyard on a budget and no-one to help me. The music is beautiful and you have a lovely voice and a wonderfully personable nature. Oh and your patio and backyard is divine, so cosy and homely but beautiful as well.

  • Love the new arbor and all your plants and planters! I miss you posting in the morning. I used to watch your articles during my breakfast time. Now I have to wait until late evening to watch. Would you reconsider posting early in the day again? Your patio space is beautiful and inviting. Thanks Sherry!

  • Love this! I live ware there is so much WIND 💨! We have a three season porch that we spend LOTS of time in. But for out doors I look for items that will not blow away! LOLO! I found a cement- taros end table! All weather rocking chairs. And my flower pots have rocks in them! My son and I built a small fish pond and I need to be glad for that, no nick-nacks ! I put them in the porch. Thank you for you beautiful ideas 👍🏻💕 I will use some !

  • All of the things on my deck are sourced from op shops, recycling centre or market place, but one thing I did buy new was my solar pump, to change out my old electric water feature to solar and spent a “little” bit more to ensure it had battery backup for night time use. Bonus it has a light to see it at night also.

  • I thought last years patio was very creative, but this years is now my favorite! I was thinking;”No, don’t remove the teapot! It’s so cute!”, but, with the new wall decor stretching so high up the wall, it looks great! Adding little lights and decorative finds to the flower pots is such a good idea. If I didn’t have such a “black-thumb”, (works well both on indoor plants, and outdoor plants!), I’d try some of these for sure! I’m sure I can try the fountain, though…

  • Having been born and raised in New England, it’s always wonderful when summer rolls around and you can spend more time outdoors. Having a patio like yours, so cozy and inviting, is pure heaven. You always do a wonderful job decorating, in or out. Have you thought about putting lights on the inside of the umbrella? Great when dining at night! And I hope some of your flower choices give off a sweet aroma to help relax you when you’re outdoors. Hope you and your family have a wonderful summer!

  • OMG!!! 😍🤩🥰🥰 I absolutely LOOOVED this article! So much thought and inspiration put in to it. I live in an apartment with a balcony that is kitty cornered with another building in the complex and have been struggling to figure out how to style and create a private space. I am so excited now with your ideas and plan to incorporate them in to my design. Thank you and the universe for aligning your article with my aspirations 🥰💖

  • The bane of my existence is what that vine is called!!😂🤦🏻‍♀️ AKA variegated vinca major (blue periwinkle). It is so invasive in NC. I pull more of that out of my flower bed than actual weeds. It would be pretty though, in moderation. Just keep your eye on it…grows fast and is sneaky. As always, wonderful article Sherry. Love all of your upcycles!

  • Go with honeysuckle. Our wisteria tore our gutters right off the house and got into our attic, tearing the strip with the attic venting loose and ruined the mesh in several vents. All it takes is one season not paying close attention and it can and will ravage everything it can wrap around or grow through. And it was a BUGGER to dig out. Wisteria is beautiful, but if you like your siding, roof, downspouts, or gutters attached…don’t ever let it get close to your house (or power lines, or basically anything you don’t want it to tear down.)

  • You are soooo creative! I just moved into a new house and have yet to ‘do up’ my balcony. It’s quite spacious, rectangular and is covered. I put all my boho stuff ( painted pallet sofa, rattan & wood chairs out and that’s about it. This vid has really inspired me to do a lot more. It only gets the morning sun so I do have to figure out what types of plants to buy. I moved from the mountains down to sea level- such a different climate and only took a few plants with me, not knowing if they all would thrive or not. Anyway, thanks for your inspirational article. 👏👏👏👏👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

  • What a beautiful place. Everything is so beautiful and inviting.. You put some of these high end designers to shame. Your hideaway is made of love for your family. Best of all most of it is what you come up with thrift items. You have given me lots of ideas for my own spaces. Always, always wowed and waiting for Monday to come around. Many thanks and Hugs friend. Rebekah

  • I wouldn’t put wisteria or honey suckle on your new arch, I have both plants, and I love them. But they both need strong support structures. The wisteria will tear up the arch, so will honeysuckle to a lesser extent, a good alternative would be a clematis vine that you can cut back every year, I have one that blooms in the late summer, and has a lovely smell. You have a beautiful patio❣️

  • I loved all of it! I was wondering about the metal pergola. Is it very noisy when it rains? We have a pergola that has a fabric top. It’s so windy here that it rips every year so much so that we have to replace it. I’ve been thinking about the iron pergolas but I’m not sure about the noise. Thanks for all the inspiration!!!

  • I have been working on my patio this week, and you have given me so many ideas! I am waiting on lights I have ordered. My space is covered and curtained like yours. My curtain rods are copper tubing, aged and patinaed now. perusal you put everything together was so enjoyable! I just love all your articles!

  • It looks beautiful. So if you want your waterfall to run at night, Thrift a floor lamp in the shape of a candy cane. Fined a lampshade that has a wire frame. Remove the material from the shade, replace it with clear flexible plastic. Now take and buy the peel & stick waterproof paper. The kind that looks like stain glass or whatever you like. Then place it on the clear plastic. Replace the lampshade back on the floor lamp. Now buy a pack of small porch rail solar light. Or battery operated with control, Flat lights. You are going to attach the lights to the top of the lampshade. The lamp above the solar waterfall will make it work. 😊

  • I would caution you if you purchase a wisteria! They can be a real pain growing rapidly and entwining themselves into every crevise or corner. They are so strong that they can even take a structure like a porch roof down! They have a criss cross root structure under the soil stretching out far from the plant base and are almost impossible to remove should you decide to do so. They are like an iron strong, never die plant that has beautiful blooms, but is a real pain in the neck! It is your choice, but a clematis or a climbing rose might give you less problems in the future and you could still enjoy them. Either one could give you a “screen” for privacy too. Just saying….

  • Love the article. I have American wisteria. It is slower growing than Chinese. They can grow up to 30ft. To big for the arbor. I’d try clematis, morning glory, or black eye Susan vine. The last 2 are anuals and not invasive. In a warmer climate that wisteria will take over your back yard and has runners that will climb everything

  • I think I may have had “clematis” back in high school. 🤔😏😂 Just teasing…love your website, Sherry! I enjoy saying, “Let’s get started!” with you each time and my young adult daughter knows not to bother me for the next 20 minutes or so when I do. Thank you for teaching me all your cool stuff! 😊💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕

  • Oh Sherry, you have created an absolutely beautiful paradise like haven for your backyard. If I had something like that, I would never want to go inside 😅. All your creative touches make everything so magical. I just love it!!! I hope you can take advantage of it all to its fullest this summer. Big Hugs! 😊🤗😚

  • Hi Sherry, your patio looks absolutely beautiful, but I knew it would as everything you do looks gorgeous. You have such a wonderful talent with all your thrift store finds etc. I’m so inspired by your articles and I’m going to have a go at doing my grandsons front porch as I’m the only one who uses it, it’s very small but I’ve got quite a few ideas going round my head that I think I can make it look nice. My grandson won’t be very happy as he doesn’t like me changing his stuff but I’m over living in a male house with nothing anywhere except his anime ornaments so I’m just going to do it and see what he says. Blessings to you Sherry and have a great week. TFS.

  • ITS VERY PRETTY, BUT ITS A PLAYGROUND FOR EVERY SNAKE ON YOUR PROPERTY… SNAKES LOVE SOFT COZY DARK COOL PLACES, MAKING YOUR PATIO A PERFECT HOME FOR SNAKES TO HIDE, I WOULD BE WONDERING EVERY TIME I WENT OUT THERE, IF THERE WAS A SNAKE UNDER A PILLOW, IN A PLANTER, MAYBE SIPPING SOME WATER OR JUST CUDDLED UP ON A CUSHION, OR HAVING A SLEEPOVER UNDER YOUR RUG 🥴🐍🥴🐍🥴🐍🥴🐍🥴🐍🥴
