Your suggestion of not rushing to judgment made me laugh at myself for crying out, “Well, you can tell they don’t have a big dog.” Slowly adapting our condo to be warm, but still leaning towards hanging all the furniture on the walls & from the ceiling because of the constant German shepherd shed :)) Had to fire Roomba. Some of the Japandi rooms look flat. No color except the wood tones and cream. No green plants to fill and soften the space. No color in coffee table books, vases etc. some of the rooms with teal or blue walls look like they’re now limited to ONLY “repeating” teal. The ’70’s home looks like it’s lost in a SEA of wood. Wood is beautiful, but it needs contrast to appreciate it.

I got large tiles on my floor (imitating marble) it looks good, it’s not tacky at all with the beige tones it has… but my flat is 2 mins from the beach and I wanted a cozy vibe with wooden table and light wood furniture. The problem is it doesn’t seem to go well on this flooring, it would have been better if the floor looked like wood too. Everything I see now in deco has wooden flooring and I’m struggling a lot to decorate this flat now 😢. Should I go for a more sophisticated vibe on this floor? So much clutter. The Sharon Radisch is UNLIVABLE. There are less than 10cm of free surface to do anything on the entire apartment! Why have so many shelves and side tables if you’re going to fill every usable cm with meaningless fragile vases just waiting to get knocked down and break? The only good thing about it is the green wall.
What color wheel are you looking at? I am an artist. Orange is across from blue on the color. Red is opposite from green. Violet is opposite from yellow. No Brown, no black, no white on the color wheel as a color of and in itself. So again, what wacky color wheel are you looking at? Maybe a trip to an eye doctor would help you to view the color wheels bit more accurately.
Don’t get me wrong, your style is amazing and your vision is extremely unique and you have a lot of talent, but I feel like you’re always trying to separate yourself from trends like you’ve never followed them and aren’t influenced by them and like your current style has always been your style, which if you go back to old articles you can clearly see where you did and have followed trends and where your style has drastically changed from your LA apartment to purchasing your two homes. Unlike you I love red, my kitchen units are red and cream with white walls. It’s a modern version of the forties. It’s been that way for 12 years and it always looks bright . Our business is all about tech. However, I am like you, I refuse to allow my home to become a smart home. My number one reason is that it opens your home up to strangers. Did you know that through smart TV’s other people can look in at you? Anything with a camera, people can look at you. How do you think those computer games that you are in the tennis game or exercise or dance class. The camera is projecting you into the character on the screen. Any portal that has a camera looking at you, even your phone or laptop can be hacked into to watch inside your home.
I LOVE vintage, but I’m a teeny bit open to tech. I can’t help it. I just got a google nest for my birthday.🙂 I don’t like dark colours for myself. I only like ” colour drenching” with very light colours, especially off white. I tried red accents and I was miserable!!!! I LOVE to add colour, especially relaxing colours.
I, like you, try to stay away from trends and stay true to what I find beautiful, interesting, and intriguing. One thing my husband and I have done to add character and speak to our love of old architecture is, we add 1 piece in each room from old architectural salvage. We have a 100 year old mantle in our family room, 150 year old French doors as side lights into our pantry, an old printing table in our entry way, corbels on the wood picket fence around our garden. We are always looking for cool new pieces to add. We add about 1 new piece every 6-8 months. It makes it really fun and uniquely our style.
It’s so interesting that you don’t consider yourself a trend follower! Please don’t read this in a negative light. I always feel like you do this in your own way! And your spaces are beautiful! However, I feel like when boho was trendy you were doing that. And now that more traditional spaces are trendy. That’s what you have as well. Again, you do it in your own way, which I love! But I do find that you seem to follow the trends more than you think. Maybe agreeing with the majority of the trend list will change your mind too?
A true designer is someone who works with the design style and wishes of their client and not someone who passes up on ideas saying “I don’t like it so imma skip it”. This was a good opportunity for you to present your ideas on how you would work with a specific design style even if its not your personal style.
You and Drew opened me up to ALL THE THINGS I can achieve with my own two hands (I didn’t intentionally use your signature quotes they just came out naturally lol)! You renovating the cottage inspired me SO MUCH! I finally purchased a humble 70’s 2-bedroom townhome in Houston last summer and have been having so much fun making it MY home one DIY at a time. We just bought a house in the country, former owner decorated in modern farmhouse, not my style, just not sure how I’ll be able to incorporate my style with it. I like a mix of moody, boho, eclectic, mcm! Finances are tight so I’ll have to live with how it is for a year. Hopefully I can make a mood board to eventually make it mine.
The older I get, the less colorful my walls are. I bring in color with textiles, accessories and books, which I have read or use as reference. As far as furniture I have everything from an 1870 treasure sewing machine to 2 month- new recliners in my living room. I have hand me down furniture from my great aunt born in 1884, my grandmothers born in 1894 and 1909, and my parents born in the 1920s. When anyone in my family is getting rid of furniture, they always contact me first.

I am closing on a house in a couple of weeks that has a lot of the neutral earthy colors I like. But….the living room has a large poppy red wall with white shelves of random sizes and shapes. I hate it!!! The first thing I’m going to do is tear out all that shelving and paint the wall a neutral color. I can’t imagine looking at that wall for any amount of time! BTW. I feel like these lists are 85% like a cheap magazine’s astrology section, saying things that are very obvious. Like, yes, luxury materials like natural stone will be in, they always are. The actual trend is in which kinds of natural stone are in. Like, it used to be granite, and then not granite at all, and now it seems some designers are starting to embrace it again. Being sustainable is another one, every single year they say that’ll be trendy. People, hopefully, don’t do that because it’s trendy, but because we have a massive climate change crisis going on 😅
The example you pulled from Pinterest for the landing suggestion with the furniture hugging the walls was just so chic! It made me think about how rules are always so context dependent, since there’s that rule saying that one shouldn’t hug the walls with furniture and leave a big open space but actually it makes so much sense in a landing, and I’ve seen so many super elegant spaces like this for example common spaces near lifts in elegant multiple flats or hotel rooms with a reception or something like that. I do agree that because the space is so big it would make sense to have something in the middle but I actually really like the grand feeling of the furniture hugging the walls especially with a statement rug and light. I don’t know if furniture in the middle would really ever be used I feel like it could be really in the way while having little set ups with chairs or little tables to place keys or even sculptures like a chest of drawers or even a display cabinet of sorts, could be so pretty. I personally would absolutely turn this room into an all encompassing floor to ceiling library with hidden doors! Not all doors, but it would remove that feeling of it being a non-space, a through space that is badly designed to be too large, by reducing the visual impact of at least some of those doors. And it would lend itself to cozy reading nooks and I’d still keep the center of the room free of furniture other than a statement rug and light. Also, any excuse to have magical hidden doors?
I really enjoyed this Podcast. Your presentation is always engaging and pleasant. That said, I think I’m a bit old-fashioned with trim because I still like the freshness of White against a bold color. I also, think that red is an important color for me personally so I’ll add it no matter what. I very much enjoy most of your content, but as an enhusiastic podcast listener, I must point out that you aren’t making a podcast yet. I know the podcast is still fairly new, but your mindset is a third YouTube website that people can try to listen to as a podcast. Your content still focuses on sharing visuals. You sitting in one place to talk vs. being more active is not the difference to making a podcast. Podcasts are about audio NOT visual. If you were listening to a podcast as you were stripping the beams, you wouldn’t want it to be pushing you to stop and check a screen for the photo ‘popped in.’ It’s not worth listening to you in the podcast app as your content isn’t designed for that space yet.
