📹 Kilz 2 Primer Review – Why We Like It and When You Should Use It
In this video I’m discussing why I like Kilz 2, when I use it, when I don’t, and what projects I recommend the DIY Painter to use it on.
Should you wear a mask when painting primer?
Painters should wear a respirator to protect their lungs from exposure to chemicals and hazardous dusts, even though paints and coatings meet strict VOC regulations. To monitor potential exposure, start with air monitoring, which can quantify concentrations of dust, chemical components, and hazards like lead, mold, or asbestos in renovation work. There are various ways to monitor your work environment, including contacting OSHA Consultation, a third-party Industrial Hygiene consultant, risk insurance companies, or even doing it yourself if you are competent in industrial hygiene sampling methods. By following these guidelines, you can ensure a safe and healthy work environment for your painter colleagues.
How long are primer fumes harmful?
To protect your home and family from indoor air pollution during painting, follow these tips:
Buy only the necessary amount of paint and store any leftovers away from the house. Choose water-based paint with a safe VOC content, as recommended by the Utah Department of Environmental Quality.
Increase ventilation to the painted rooms during and after painting, using windows and fans to reduce VOC concentrations.
Take frequent breaks to breathe fresh air, avoid placing furniture, decor, and clothing back into the room until most paint off-gassing has occurred. Cover fabric-covered furnishings with plastic sheeting or drop cloths to prevent VOC absorption.
Wait at least 72 hours before returning to a freshly painted room, even if you can no longer smell the fumes.
Use an air purifier to reduce VOC levels in the air, such as the Molekule air purifier, which destroys VOCs at the molecular level.
By following these tips, you can enjoy the benefits of your painting job without worrying about the health effects of paint fumes.

Oil-based paint primer fumes can cause skin irritation and neurological effects, including dizziness, headache, and nausea. Fume extractors are ventilation systems designed to capture and remove harmful vapors, fumes, and particles from workspaces. They create negative pressure inside the workspace, allowing air to be sucked through filters, trapping harmful particles or fumes. These particles and fumes are then exhausted by an exhaust fan, preventing them from entering the lungs. Long-term exposure to these fumes can lead to skin irritation and neurological issues.
