THIS is what made Roseanne a fantastic show. It was real. They didn’t sugarcoat stuff, they didn’t have to make everything flashy, it was gritty, it was real and it was believable. They didn’t try to hide peoples demons, they put them out there for everyone to see and sometimes they even succumbed to them.
The sad thing is what this woman said about how some people in the neighbourhood I lived in were getting their medications they needed! This is because not really addictions but because medications get dropped by insurances or people just can’t afford them anymore! This scene is common with what is going on everywhere and is not talked about in America.
I’m not condoning what Roseanne did, but god damn I can’t even imagine the betrayal she must have felt from this. She knew these people for 30+ years, some of them since they were children. Most of them wouldn’t even be acting if it wasn’t for her. The show was called “Roseanne”, you can’t take Roseanne out of it & expect it to be the same.
The fact that all these actors who worked with Roseanne all those years and most of them owe their big breaks to her but WENT ALONG with that completely asinine cause of death is shameful and insulting to Roseanne. They didn’t have to agree with what happened with Roseanne but they most certainly should have demanded a better and more plausible death for her.
I got so mad when they decided to kill her by an overdose. They chose to humiliate her pretty much. They couldn’t just kill her off, they had to make her look bad. But the jokes on them, because all they really did was show that even the most amazingly strong person can be taken over by the horrible curse that is the opioid epidemic. The opioid crisis doesn’t care who a person is…they just take lives and leave families in tatters
I hate the reason they killed her off… they are making money off of a show that only had success because of her. It’s heartbreaking to see how quickly some of them turned on her. But I also like the depth it provides with the her loss. I like that we see a man who after four decades still loves his wife… our society needs that… to see a successful marriage… despite hardships, marriages can still last today. We see children who are grown. Yet still close to their parents. Parents who didnt stop being parents just because their kids became adults.

I dont think that was all acting on John Goodman’s part. Roseanne was his TV wife and work partner for a damn decade and I have no doubt that they care deeply for each other. Roseanne’s sudden departure from the show/death on the show must’ve been really hard for everyone, especially John. How do you keep doing your best work when the person who you worked so well with is now gone? I see this as Dan mourning the death of his Rosie, and John mourning the departure of his coworker Roseanne.
I grew perusal Rosanne but learned to appreciate it even more the older I got but no episode hit me harder than this one I’m a recovering opiate addict I got hooked on them in 97 after a steel mill accident after 28 trips to rehab I finally got clean 4 years ago I consider myself very lucky even with a failing liver I overdose 8 times and buried my daughters mother due to addiction it happens far to often I almost lost everything I love to addiction please if you or anyone you know has a problem with any kind of drug don’t give up on them we’ve lost far to many already
I can’t believe they wrote her character off like that!! I grew up perusal this show and it was always family oriented. Rosanne deserved better!! Not to mention the continuity errors. I remember when they killed off Dan. But losing Dan to a heart attack, although was heartbreaking but understandable. But Rosanne dying of an overdose?! No way!! This show was way too good and amazing to end it on that sad note. 😢
What irritates me the most is that the family does not seem all the distraught with Roseanne’s death. Her character was beloved by all, not only viewers but the characters on the show. It is just really odd perusal this. I love Roseanne’s character, I don’t condone what she did, but she made a mistake and they should not have killed her off, especially in this disrespectful way.
I was upset that Roseanne was booted from her own show. Honestly, though, it was a mistake to bring the show back. As great as the entire cast is, Roseanne herself has changed. In the early nineties, Roseanne was a liberal feminist. She changed in the twenty years after the original show ended to a Trump supporting conservative. She wasn’t the same person anymore as the Roseanne character she played. People like the Connors, in the late 2010’s, they’d be conservatives, not liberals. So, Roseanne was really working against herself. Even if she never said anything about Valerie Jarret, it was only a matter of time before she was a guest on The View and she pissed every one of them off by praising Trump. The media would’ve turned on her then. I think the way they wrote her off was good, but the show is just not the same without Roseanne.

this whole thing is such a disappointment. roseanne was such a big part of my childhood and i feel like this political correctness thing has just creeped into every crevice of every piece of culture i like and just ruined it. i’ll still watch the first four seasons but i have a hard time not thinking of what sellouts the actors are to throw roseanne under the bus like they did. this whole thing has really soured me on the show.

I work in health care and I can tell you that they do not ever show the benefits of narcotic medication. They just want to point fingers and blame someone. When in fact it comes with a lot of “personal” responsibility. It also takes a doc who does not hand it out like candy to be responsible. I for one have had over 30 surgeries. 8 shoulder and four back, which I just had a few days ago. Without the medication I have been taking for 6 years responsibly I would never be able to work. I am so sick of being looked at like I have a problem because my pain is not understood. Doctors are too afraid to prescribe because we have misinformed people and politicians who are more worried about numbers then reality. Fact is I would rather be dead then suffer from this pain. But the medication which I am responsible gives me a chance and the ability to take care of myself and my two boys. There are a lot of people who benefit and are responsible. But when you have people who know someone who dies they want to jump the gun and forget about us. When you have politicians who are worried about reelection instead of people like me who are dependent, they are creating people who look to the streets for drugs causing a bigger out of control problem. So their solution. Let the patient suffer if Motrin does not work. Oh well. Better to let them hurt then take the low chance they become addicted. You will never hear how these benefits us. The media only wants you to know what they want you to know. Just like how many guns save people every day.

They could have suspended her for a year from the show (without pay)and they could have explained her absence for a year that she went to rehab for opioid abuse. Then when a year was up they could have a feel as where they should go from there. But to give her what was essentially the death penalty in TV terms. That was way overkill. Of course she didn’t have to sign the show away but they had her over a barrel on that one. I think it was just overkill.

This whole thing makes me sick. I know that the actor got cancelled, but the character/show didn’t deserve this. I never really gave the reboot a chance and now that I’m rewatching Roseanne I was curious to see how it all went down. What a horrible way to get rid of one of the best TV moms of the 80s/90s. Sure she was a bit rough, but she was believable and truly wanted to be a good mom.
The acting is forced, and mechanical now. Everyone just seems over it now. Like they appreciate the money, but they seem not into it and probably did it because of the money and maybe pressure from fans. Even when Roseanne was there, show still sucked. Should have never brought it back. The show was perfect in the 90s from beginning to end. Unless reviving old shows to watch as they were as marathons or something, let’s leave them untouched and in the state that they were when they ended. If it last longer, they will probably try to make Dan a new love interest to pass off as roseanne…probably let him have a relationship with that lady he cheated on her with..
This seems a rather hateful way to do away with the character that the show was centered around considering the show was never hateful before in any way. I think this is going to completely rub the shows huge following the wrong way. Any fan could have told them this idea was a mistake that would cost them their livelihoods. Addiction is a real problem in America. That’s a big problem, and it does not discriminate. It doesn’t care who you are. People think addicts are homeless, jobless low life people. Shouldn’t Roseanne of just apologised saying she didn’t mean to offend anyone and then someone from the network can say something else like people have a right to say what they want and get over things in the past and people need to get over words offending them or else racism will just continue if they get offended over the words some fools are just going to keep on saying it. After that get on with the show with her on it? Better than a tv show making it look like U gotta start killing off tv characters and trying to make them live in shame the rest of there lives for something someone else thinks is wrong. It’s just sad at THIS point. I know I’m late but I always wanted to comment. I’m black and forgive Roseanne and loved this show. I know Rose was a good person. It was HER SHOW for crying out loud. She definitely should’ve been let back on the show. They even could’ve interpreted a scene of such mishap and accident, becoming a humbled apology that could’ve brought us ALL closer together. Wow, I can’t believe they killed Roseanne off! I was so happy last year when they brought Dan back to life. 🙂 I think I am just going to ignore this new series – for me, season 10 was the end of the story, and they all lived happily ever after. 🙂 The idea of continuing the show without Roseanne is stupid, and disrespectful to Roseanne Barr. It’s also utterly ridiculous to boycott her just over one insulting joke she made, or for expressing her political views. Everyone’s got the right to express their personal views. I’ve been a Roseanne fan since I was little. I don’t always agree with her liberal political views, and I sometimes found them inappropriate when she tried to make the show “PC”, but she’s allowed to believe whatever she wants to believe. It doesn’t stop me from enjoying her work.

The original show was one of my favorite shows as a kid, I’m black and I feel like it was an accurate depiction of working class family like back in the 90s. Even though the family was white, and my family is black. They were in a working class suburb, my family lived in the city, I still found it relatable to my experience growing up more than Family Matters, Fresh Prince of Bel Air, and The Cosby show, and don’t get me wrong I loved those shows and it was great that they showed positive depictions of black families. But Roseanne was closer to my experience growing up. I never got around to perusal this reboot because I was too busy and not really into perusal TV much around the this released. Roseanne!! I still am, and always will be a fan! You broke so many barriers on important issues, including racism! You just can’t win…first everyone berated Rosanne albeit for good reason, then it was the big news as everyone followed her fall from grace. Then they come back, still fuelled from the now annoying, oh so common toxic social media outrage….and now people feel bad for her again. Ambien does not cause racism but it DOES make ppl say and do things they normally wouldn’t if its taken improperly (take it only before laying down, no more social activities after, none) its embarrassing for the person too because they say and do things that don’t make any sense, its not a TRUTH serum! Roseanne has always been a crass individual and that’s what made her so famous (Ive always been a fan), she wasn’t thinking clearly when her mind decided, hey this is funny! This is why I rarely go on social media, everyone is a bully now. I understand that these subjects need to be covered but they could of just added a gay friend and have Jackie date a black guy here and there and cover the base’s . The only male kid on the show is a gay kid and that might be empowering to some but I think it’s a slap in the face to the core audience. Rosanne has some strong views in her personal life but she should of kept her job, just have her tone it down a bit, but we all have extreme views and they become amplified when trying to be funny. It’s not fair.
Let me speak as a pain patient and a person that loves the original show. I’m saddened that people do not understand what it’s like to live in serious pain day in and day out, it never stops, you would do anything to stop the pain. The way they got “rid” of rosanne is a smack to all pain patients, we are sorely ignored and labeled as drug addicts, let me tell the difference between the two. Addicts lives spiral out of control and they would do anything for a high including take pills from another person or make something themselves. Pain patients seek doctors care and we normally have a laundry list of medical problems, we do as the doctor is advises, and most importantly we thrive in life. My family has to watch me suffer in pain every second of everyday does that matter, what about these families? Wish people wasn’t so judgmental on a subject they know nothing about so instead of educating yourself you judge. I haven’t watched the new show just because they depicted her as an addict, addicts can’t help but show signs that they indeed have a problem, you can’t put pain patients and addicts in the same category because it’s totally separated. How they wrote rosanne off was morally wrong and depicts her in a false light. Street drugs like flakka, heroin, fake fentanyl is considered an opioid (bet some didn’t even know that) that is the problem in this country. We all understand that sharing meds is definitely wrong but all shouldn’t have to pay the price for what someone else decides to do and that is what’s happening.
As someone who has used opioid based medication for many years I don’t understand the pain that goes with addiction. I have a lot of sympathy for people who do though. I was paid out for a permanently disability after damaging my back 20 years ago. I’ve managed to continue in a career as a carpenter since then . I’m very much monitored by my very excellent doctor. These days I usually only take a couple of codeine phosphate tablets a day and I’m very aware to work carefully.. I always understand that I was lucky to never have found an addition apart from sugar. My teeth and midriff attest to the fact.its heartbreaking to witness addition at its worst. I’ve seen family members suffer greatly because of it. It’s only a tv show but it sure rings true. I hope that if there is someone who reads this and is suffering due to substance addiction that they can find the help they need and a good doctor who actually cares.
its funny, never watched the show back in the day. It now plays on a must see TV website. I stopped on it one day – IT WAS SO FUNNY. I was a convert. Watched the new “woke” show. Total crap without Roseanne. Also, noticed all the woke elements (interracial marriage, cross dressing/trans son, etc) – all that has been totally downplayed or eliminated. The show without Roseanne can’t carry anything. Slow roll down the drain. All this for a made up racial comment. Also – in this show Roseannes sister gets a call from a “friend” in the coroner’s office with the overdose claim – Thats a violation of HIPPA laws. Shouldn’t she be fired for that?
These shows have done something few have the balls to tackle the downside of capitalism. When it goes to far there is such a divide between the rich and the poor it’s unreal. It is a funny but real show, the fact is there are real life Conners out there who are struggling to make ends meat, who work every hour god sends them and they never get ahead, they raise their kids to the best of their ability. One thing you can be sure about poverty is its creates desperation when people get tired of the system constantly putting them down, they rebel and eventually it can lead to crime and death from medical issues etc. Every country in the world especially those with the wealth like the western countries shoul have a certain quality of life, no one should be struggling and killing themselves just to keep their house, keep the electric on and provide food for themselves and their families and what about those with no families to help. I respect these shows so much for their humour, their heart and their many important messages.
A lot of people Hate this. I Applaud it. It shines a light on much larger problems in this country. “Big Pharma” is getting rich while the working poor (and the elderly) have to decide between Housing and Healthcare; and Drug addiction. ROSIE should be proud of this, too. Her former cast mates handled this episode with Class. I stopped perusal the first go round. Might have to go back and “binge-watch” a few now. Bravo!
Wasnt all of this over making an offhanded tweet while fighting Ambien induced sleep? People do insane sh1t on Ambien…and given the current state of hollywood and much darker agendas from much more famous people being revealed, i would say that Roseanne controversies look like sesame street compared to some of the other bigger names out there. Ahem “James Gunn” “Tom Hanks” “Roman Polanski” yet Roseanne is the one who gets ripped apart in her very own show. They couldnt even give her a respectful death, they had to turn her into a closet opiate addict. Chuck Lorre strikes again! What a bunch of crap. Ive always and will always love Roseanne the actress/comedian.
They should’ve ended the show after Roseanne’s death. It makes zero sense to carry on a series without its main character. You can just tell that the writing is just terrible by having Becky just randomly having pills in her pocket or suddenly just finding more of them in the freezer. That’s just terrible writing and a horrible way to sendoff Roseanne. Regardless of what you think of the actress, her character didn’t deserve to go out like this.
I know I’m way late to the topic but ABC swore they were going to “kill her character off with dignity” wow is this dignified?? I’m not saying addiction is evil or wrong hell I struggled with my own addiction myself but the way they did her overdose had nothing to do with dignity towards her character!! Just my opinion!
I didn’t like the OD part at all. Especially after Glenn Quinn. He died in real life of a heroin overdose and they have him dying from drugs on the show. Then they have Becky fighting addiction and in the original series, Jackie and a few others with alcohol. Roseanne was one of the main folks that took care of everyone and nursed them back to health. To write her off like they did was just wrong. Yes, she said awful things and fully deserved the backlash for it but she did create an amazing show that ran for a lot of years and still continued on after she was no longer a part of it because the fan base was that strong. She deserved better than what they gave her. It’s not praising her for her words/tweets, it’s a praise and thanks for her creation and the people within it.
One of the many reasons I left the Democratic party was the way Rosesnne was done in. Now, while I dont believe she is racist, I do feel given this countries past history, referencing any black person to any character out of planet of the apes is just in poor taste. I would not have canceled the show but a heart felt apology would have been made. Ive had a busy life and have not watched The Connors as I used to Roseanne. But from what I have seen I do like it.
This was such a disrespectful thing they could have done to the character into the actress that played her. Everybody who still participated in that show should be ashamed of themselves. I mean if everything they could have done to the character opioid overdose? Really??? They should have never revived the show especially in these very sensitive times of such soft people.
This show was ruined the moment they got rid of Roseanne and turned into a woke joke. I’m glad she’s happy n moved on with her life but none of these people had her back when she needed them. They are all selfish and evil. They wouldn’t had a damn career if the show didn’t have her to begin with! I grew up perusal Roseanne and she is a legend!
Well I think their trying to show a problem in this country the war it’s raging against pain killers as a person that has been on painkillers for years because of a work injury after years of helping me which worked just fine and under strict doctor care they took them away because of the war on pain pills and now I get treatments that haven’t helped the pain at all now people can’t get relief for pain because doctors are scared to death of having their license taken away
Chuck Lorre did the same thing to Roseanne that he did to Charlie Sheen in 2 and a half men. Sheen had a borderline brutal death in that series where he slipped and fell on a platform in paris and was hit by a train and “his body just exploded like a full balloon of meat” So i guess if youre one of Chuck Lorres lead actors and you fart backwards look out, your character will suffer a tragic cowardly death.
As addict I found comfort in people just as fucked up as me. Funny how you seem to attract fellow junkies. We know what it’s like and usually consider it help. I can’t describe how bad you head gets. My last day of heavy use, crawled up the garage to snort one more, had 18 fifteens that day, laid at the foot of my bed, my children and wife were sleeping, I thought to myself if I don’t wake up in the morning that will be just fine.
