The International Residential Code (IRC) is a set of regulations that govern the design and construction of residential buildings, specifically focusing on one- and two-family dwellings. It includes requirements for building, plumbing, mechanical, fuel gas, and electrical requirements for one- and two-family dwellings and townhouses up to three. The code also includes requirements for exterior wall coverings, which provide a weather-resistant envelope that protects the building’s interior from the elements.
Exterior house numbers must be visible, minimum 4 inches high, of contrasting color, and legible from the street or road fronting the property. Chapter 7 provides requirements for wind protection. Exterior wall coverings must provide weather protection for the building, with materials of the minimum nominal thickness specified in Table 1404.2 being acceptable. Steel masonry lintels bear at least 4 inches and are painted for corrosion resistance.
Flashing has been installed at exterior window and door. Other types of paint suitable for early application include cement paints, silicate paints, and washable temper depending on the final decoration in view. Buildings or structures moved into or within a jurisdiction must comply with the provisions of this code, the International Building Code (51-50 WAC), and the IRC.
Upon the final inspection, the building or structure and general owner must submit the building permit application and building plans for review. Guidance for proper deck framing can be found in Section R507 of the IRC.

Is exterior wall structural?
External walls are load-bearing as they support the roof and upper stories of a building and may also bear weight from external elements like snow or wind. They may contain important structural elements like beams or columns that need to be considered when planning a renovation project. Partial walls, such as half or knee walls, may also be load-bearing, separating spaces while maintaining an open feel.
Identifying any structural elements within partial walls is crucial before removing or altering them. To determine if an interior column or post is load-bearing, look at the building’s blueprints or use tricks to determine if the post bears a load.
Is IRC used anymore?
IRC remains a popular choice among open-source projects, including the Undernet, which is one of the largest real-time chat networks in the world, connecting over 35 countries and serving over 1, 000, 000 users weekly.
What is the most popular IRC?
As of June 2021, there are 481 different Internet Social Network (IRC) networks, with Libera Chat having the most users with 20, 374 channels on 26 servers. The top 100 IRC networks share over 100, 000 channels on about one thousand servers. IRC experienced a significant decline after its golden era in the 1990s and early 2000s, losing around 60 of its users between 2003 and 2012. Users moved to social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, as well as open platforms like XMPP.
Freenode, which had around 90, 000 users in 2016, has since declined to about 9, 300 users. The largest IRC networks are traditionally grouped as the “Big Four”, which change periodically, but due to the community nature of IRC, there are many other networks for users to choose from.

What is the code of practice for painting buildings?
The British Standard 6150 provides a comprehensive set of guidelines for the painting of buildings. It addresses the essential aspects of preparation, initial painting, and maintenance of painted surfaces, including both internal and external painting.
What is the procedure of painting in building?
New construction painting is a relatively easy process compared to existing house painting. The process involves evaluating the area, removing windows and trim, installing baseboards and trim, caulking, filling, removing switch covers and outlet covers, sanding uneven surfaces, priming the surface, applying paint, and cleaning. The five main surfaces to consider are interior, exterior, wood, sheetrock, and plaster.
Interior paint should have a binding resin for adhesion and smearing, using shellac primer. Exterior paint should have a softer binding resin for fading, peeling, and chipping, using exterior primer. Wood should use acrylic paint for exterior wood, with an oil-based primer for sealing the wood and preventing tannins from entering the paint’s surface. Emulsion paint is best for plaster, with a mist coat of watered-down emulsion paint. Sheetrock should use 100 latex or acrylic latex paint, with Polyvinyl acetate (PVA) primer for durability.
In summary, new construction painting is a simple and efficient process that requires careful preparation and application of different paints and primers.
What is the Chapter 7 of the international law?
Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter outlines the UN Security Council’s powers to maintain peace, allowing it to identify threats to peace, breach of peace, or aggression, and take military and nonmilitary actions to restore international peace and security. The UN Charter’s prohibition of member states attacking other UN member states is central to its purpose of preventing war, as reflected in the Nuremberg Trials’ concept of a crime against peace.
Chapter VII also gives the Military Staff Committee responsibility for strategic coordination of forces, consisting of the chiefs of staff of the five permanent members of the Council. If necessary, the UNSC authorizes member states or coalitions to act nationally or through regional organizations to address threats, using all necessary measures, including outright force. Military action performed through land, air, and sea forces is specifically allowed, including troop deployment, enforcement of a no-fly zone, and aerial bombardment.

I have made a few articles on new construction builds. Is it against the law for me to walk into a residential home and articletape or do I have to have permission. The builder on one of the jobs that I articletaped called me and told me to remove my article he did not like me showing his work. He told me he would call the police if I went into another one of his jobsites and recorded. The jobsite was horrendous and full of code violations.
after perusal this article i checked my new house construction, found these issues, is there a way i can get codes that are violated 3 ply lvl not bolted together, only nailed Bathroom vents going to soffit one engineered truss bottom chord is broken trusses are nailed to interior wall top plate load bearing & exterior walls not bolted to the slab
As far as the anchor bolt being on a load bearing wall. If the concrete guys don’t place them. Is it up to the framing contractor to let the inspector know before they start work? Or is the framing contractor allowed to drill into the slab and then becomes their fault if they don’t? Also if they are not, do they need to send off to a structural engineer to get a stamp of approval to drill into the slab and add the bolt? Thank you sir! Great article!
This is very good.. here’s the but part or question you said your a Georgia inspector… But even with international codes all states will buy pass the international codes buy stating to contractor that they only go buy county and or city codes, thus you usually as contractor are told even in classes to abide buy that first .. you in most states fight Three different code inspectors at time .. I know this and asked and told inspector I followed the international codes which is over and county and or city codes but they get mad and start power tripping you .. how do you handle this .. but after being mad to make corrections another inspector asked me why I did this I told him and he laughed in fact this guy taught the school for the trade but he said just go over the heads if we are sure we are right .. of course fighting or pissing an inspector off is not what we like to do but he was right as well .. this article is on par to the way we run our jobs and most times beyond but from time to time we are caught buy power tripping inspectors.. why not have one code not three this would stop all confusion of this and most could go buy the correct code that’s acceptable and read correctly by all parties.. again great job … And yes to many take short cuts and inspectors are needed without doubt
Really enjoy your articles. I am in the middle of budling a house in Georgia and in the middle of plumbing and electrical myself i made a mistake with the vent and drain pipe on a 2×6 wall interior it’s a barndominium actually but I have around 4 holes I didn’t have to run for a vent pipe I had a plumber come tell me I didn’t need a vent for the laundry sink sense the drain is going into the main 3inch drain with the washing me drain and the 3 inch main drain has a vent but i do need some answers on a lot of things well maybe not answers but guidance and if it is up to code or not. Is there a way I can contact you and maybe go over with some pictures
Help, just bought a new house in Florida and found under the exterior wall where it sits on the concrete wall (about 3 feet of concrete base before exterior wall starts ) hasn’t been sealed. You can see an interior pipe because the concrete hasn’t covered it, I can see all the wall seal paper and insulation, this can’t be up to code standards as it’s not sealed !
Hi First off Thank you for sharing your view on inspections… I am an Instructor of the electrical trade and teach online and have incorporated your articles into my classroom… I have a request, Can you do an Electrical Violatio9n article of just electrical issues,.,, as an Instructor who searches for classroom content I find that it is difficult to collect article that has High Educational Value, So I like your articles, and would like/SUGGEST A DEDICATED TO ELECTRICAL article… Thank you As I look forward to viewing this
I know all this codes are supposed to have a valid reasoning behind. But sometimes I wonder if we do really have to follow them. On that handrail, why it needs to terminate on the wall? Me as a homeowner, I would like it as shown. I can’t envision any reason besides being a possible hazard if you hit it with nay poart of your body and the termination is rough. Which would be an accident, and that can appen with almost any thing on your house, a toilet, a door knob, a sink any appliance.
Couple of general comments. First, it would be good to inform the viewer of your credentials for presenting this material, i.e. ICC certifications. Second would be to provide specific code references for a violation. You or me (PE & MCP) simply saying something is a violation does not reinforce to the student what the code actually says. For example, the fastening of wood trusses to interior partition walls is not a code violation in itself. It may be in contradiction to the manufacturers installation instructions. The movement you a discussing here is called truss creep.
I’m living in Philadelphia I have house renting what the code for back door he leaving a room door at the back door mad I call license inspections because it was seriously cold all winter we couldn’t sit downstairs the back pantry room affects the kitchen the kitchen affected the dining room and living rooms connected together please tell me what I can do because my landlord trying to get over on me and I want to be moved to another house better
When u get your truss layout paper work from the company that builds them if you look in the paper work they show you how and what to use if you come a cross broken trusses…ive seen where inspectors said that it is ok to use that for a guide to repair the trusse and ive had inspectors make us get letters and we would have to cut out the broken pieces and replace it then plywood it on both sides …..
Love your vids, Mr. Inspector! At about 13:00 where the framers created a chase that has to be fireblocked: is just some cheap half inch OSB sufficient to seal that chase on the top, or do you need to use something else? Also, if the chase is more than 8 feet taller than the slab, do you have to use 2 different fireblocks, one at 8 feet and one at the ceiling?
How can you a person forget about the anchor bolts…. 🤔 I’m a lawn service guy in Tallahassee Florida and I know that 🤣…. anyways thanks for the article…..me and wifey building dream home this year Jehovah’s willing 😁….. learning a lot Thxs….. My G/C is going to frame our house…but definitely will send him this article he just got his GC license…… 🤔
I worked with a structural engineer, got drawings/specs, and now have a permit to remove a 9′ section of load bearing wall to create a passageway between two rooms. If you were the framing inspector, are you going to want to see ALL the framing exposed up to the top plate (new LVL header, double jack studs, etc)? If not, I don’t have to take down crown molding or re-drywall.
Question I live in Atlanta my home had water damage due to burst pipe in attic my master bedroom ceiling came down and my guess bathroom ceiling came down also a lot of insulation is it the insurance company responsibility to replace the insulation in the attic my home was repaired but no insulation in the attic?
Hello Sir! I live in North Carolina and I’m building a new house and was wondering if it is required by code that anchor bolts be installed at sill plates? Also I’m looking for a good inspector to do a pre drywall inspection, either you or someone you can suggest in Charlotte NC, this would be great opportunity for someone to make some money!!!
Section R302.13 lists several methods for protecting the floor assembly directly above a fuel-fired appliance. “Floor assemblies that are not required elsewhere in this code to be fire-resistance rated, shall be provided with a 1/2-inch (12.7 mm) gypsum wallboard membrane, 5/8-inch (16 mm) wood structural panel membrane, or equivalent on the underside of the floor framing member.” Drywall is not the sole acceptable material.
Yes, I’m new perusal. Also, I did Subscribe I will be starting to watch. I do have a question. My husband, a Residential Inspector, a Expert (roof frame) told me not order Truss on your Residential Roof frame Do a Hand framing instead Like you said on your article. They will Be broken. Right now I’m in PHASE 1 We Notices they place it on the plan. We are reviewing it. I can write that down to remove the Truss- Replace for hand frame Roof? .. you probably will see my pic.. & again asking some questions. Thank you
I saw some additional things that looked like they would be code violations in my area of the country. And some of the codes mentioned in this article are different than the codes in my area. What I would say is check your local codes. Most are now based in the IRC (International Residential Code), but some are not and some haven’t adopted all of it. Also a code for commercial is often different than a code for residential. Commercial and residential use different sets of codes, at least they do in my area.
Stucco guy 35 yrs in az, went from no moisture barrier to single paper to 2 ply paper to tyvek to stuccobwrap and drainage wrap rubber wrapping around all openings and penetrations, out of the business a couple years now but this new Keene product looks pretty neat and if done properly and inspected should work, I was upset everytime there was a change every few years but looking back I think it all helped ., except for taping all seams I not sure about that with 6 to 12 inches of overlapping if that is necessary for 20 dollar a roll tape, but anyhow I enjoyed perusal your presentation even tho I’m done with my stucco and veneer license
