Home improvements are generally not tax deductible if they meet three qualifying criteria: betterment, capital improvement, and routine maintenance. Regular home maintenance is not tax deductible, including routine fixes to maintain the property’s current condition. However, there are some exceptions to the general rule that home improvements are not tax deductible in the year they are made. If someone is making an improvement to their primary residence (no business use, such as a home office), they are not deductible in the current year. However, if the repairs were made to your primary home, they are not usually tax deductible.
