In The Sims 4, players can modify their Sims by pressing and holding the “Shift” key on the keyboard and left-clicking on them. The “Modify in CAS” option will appear, allowing players to make necessary changes to their Sims. To edit existing Sims, players need to bring up the cheat console by hitting Ctrl + Shift + C. Type in the cheat ‘cas.fulleditmode’ and hit enter.
In The Sims 4 Dream Home Decorator, players can embark on an exciting new active career in interior design. They can take on various gigs, ranging from renovating entire homes to adding finishing touches to specific rooms. Interior decorator gigs are bookended by social tasks, and players can use keyboard shortcuts like pg up and pg dn to move up and down floors with ease.
These Sims 4 interior design cheats help spruce up your home or career without having to work too hard. Players can change floor (page up/down) and make walls invisible using the blue arrow for changing floor and red arrow for making walls invisible. To access the build mode, players can open the top right-hand menu and click on the spanner and hammer icon or press F3 on.
However, it is not possible to edit worlds in Sims 4. Cheats allow players to build on/modify hidden lots in addition to ordinary lots. To learn how to choose a color palette and decorate your house build in The Sims 4, follow these tips and tricks.

I always like these articles because while I do know most of the tips by now, there’s always at least one thing I didn’t know. This time it was the alt placement for roof heights. I had no idea that was a thing. I usually got annoyed when I would try to line up the roof with the wall and it just wouldn’t work. I would end up rebuilding or reshaping the house lmao. Now I have a solution! 😁
I love how excited the Sims community is to welcome new players. There’s a lot to learn about this game, but there’s also so many people like LilSimsie who make helpful resources like this! There is one more shortcut that I think is worth mentioning. Ctrl+F can be used to cut floor tiles in half diagonally. It’s great to use to make custom floors or to create a clean edge where the floorboards meet in the corner of a wrap around porch. Also, the fish, frogs, and insects from the debug can be placed in the world and they will be inside little aquariums. The fish can be mounted to hang on the wall. There are also feathers in the Cats & Dogs expansion that can be hung on the wall and they turn into little framed pictures of of the birds. (I don’t know if the bugs and birds are available in base game. Bugs would probably be in Outdoor Retreat?)
i’ve been playing the sims 4 since it came out and, although i knew almost all these tips (i knew the camera positions thing existed, i just never bothered to figure out what keys it was), i am so keen to share this article with my friends and family. as soon as i heard the news that the base game would be free i told them all about it and i think this article would be super helpful to them. thanks kayak !

If you’re on Playstation, here is the info altered for you: 1:we can’t do this 2:you can open the cheat menu with L1,L2,R1, and R2 all at the same time. Then, just do the rest like normal 3: you can cycle through the grid with L2 in build mode. It will give you full tile, half tile, and free placing of items. We can’t freely rotate things. 4:You can go into top down view with the right button on the dpad in build mode 5:to raise items up or move items down, hold both bumpers(L2 and R2) at the same time and use the up and down the dpad 6:cannot set camera angles 7:this works the same, just with the different controls 8:use both bumpers (L2 and R2) and use the right and left on the dpad 9:cannot use quarter tiles as far as I know(might be wrong on this, pls let me know) 10:we can FINALLY do this! Just use the triggers L1 or R1 11: we use to be able to cycle between these with just a button but with a recent update, it was changed and I don’t know if it’s possible now(more experienced ppl pls tell me cause I would like to know) 12: works the same 13: works the same 14: not possible as far as I know 15:not possible as far as I know 16:not possible as far as I know 17:does this by default 18: works the same 19:works the same(you just can’t redraw it- just move the stairs and delete individually with the hammer) and also yes delete the underside of the stairs 20:works the same 21:works the same I’m not an expert but I hope this helps someone Lilsimsie, if you want a challenge, build something complex on console LMAOOO
I know you don’t usually use or mention mods, but I feel like pointing out that Twisted Mexi’s mod “Better Build Buy” organizes and names most the debug and live edit options, so instead of searching debug, you can search “trees” and it will give you all the debug trees. It just makes your debug tips a lot easier cuz they’re more organized
OMG, the “Hold ALT to freely move items” alone was amazing. It’s been driving me up the wall with some items snapping and taking up too much room, and I didn’t know about the Alt trick (Option on Mac), Thank you! (Just started playing TS4 a couple weeks ago after not touching a Sims game since the original one back when it was new)
Thank you so much Kayla! This is super helpful! On the German keyboard: sizing up is ‘ sizing down is ß (so the two keys next to the backspace key). Raising and lowering is 9 and 0. Rotating clockwise is . and counterclockwise is, (to free rotate, simply hold down alt and drag the item). The rest should be the same.
This is super duper helpful. I’d been perusal Kelsey Impicciche for a while before I even got back to The Sims, and once I did I came across your content, which I LOVE. And I’ll watch Simmers do some of this stuff, and sometimes you mention how to do it as you’re doing it, but I rarely retain it. Having a resource like this with a bunch of tips in one place is awesome, and I would love it if you make it a series.
I’ve been playing with the sims 3 until now because I hadn’t really played that much when the sims 4 came out, I had quite a few expansions and the sims 4 had a few things I didn’t like when it came out. I was thinking about buying it when they announced it would become free and I was so excited to try it out!! It’s very different but I love it:) I was quite lost with the building mode because it’s very similar but at the same time it has more options and the tools are different (and better I would say, except the roofs, what is up with the roofs?!?) This has been so helpful and I’m so excited to be part of the community!!❤ Can’t wait to name my first cow plant
thank you for these tips even as someone whos played off and on since sims 2 I learned quite a few things like I never realized I could delete under the stairs. You say that could be a money saving thing but I could see for me that being an organization thing as well since then I could put things under the stairs.
Oh my God. You have no idea how difficult I found playing the game with the new UI. I’ve played it before the whole sims 4 with all the packs. But the little hot keys. Like I was trying to rotate a furniture piece and trust me I just couldn’t. It was funny and stupid and crazy. And I am so grateful to you for uploading this particular article. Love that you actually care this much. I’ve literally paused the article just so I can write this essay. 😂😂😂😂
Thanks for the tips on the TS3 camera. I could not put my finger on what was wrong with the TS4 camera until I watched this article and realized I couldn’t tilt (rotate) the camera up/down. To be fair, the last time I played a sims game, specifically TS3 was more than a decade ago. Since TS4 is free to play and I was bored the other, figured I just download it and give it a go.
Roofs clipping when making a stair landing can also be solved by making the fence go through the stair opening. Like at the top of the stairs, don’t break up the fence, but continue it. The game will make it invisible and sims can use the stairs, but the game will also recognize the space as a room and not clip the roof.
I was one of the people who requested this article because I was always wondering how you make things big and small and how you place them nicely on the walls, etc. I am so glad you took your time to prepare this helpful tutorial. Thank you very much. I learned a lot and I always get back to this when I forget something.
i’ve been playing sims 4 since it came out and would always get annoyed by where the paper towel would lock on the grid… i cant believe i never knew this super simple trick to place it and other counter + night stand items… wow. thank you. edit: and theres even more i didnt know… i’m losing my mind!
Its absolutely brill that you put this together, especially for any newer Simmers that are coming into the game or returning to it. I know when I got Sims 4 the last game I played was Sims 2 Pets and it took me so long to work my way around everything. I’m positive any future gamers will be very appreciative for these hints and tips – hopefully it’ll make build mode more fun for them as well
Few months late (thanks for the tutorial btw really needed a quick refresher) But when you use the cheat “money (amount)” it doesn’t give you that much it sets your amount of money to the amount inputted, so you can set your money high and edit your house and then return to the original amount you had.
Thank you so much Kayla for all of this information! I have been playing Sims 4 since the base game became free in October and since I only have the base game and one free pack which is the Christmas one, I don’t have a lot of options when I build, but knowing these little hacks, I can go back to all of my old builds and fix things!
You can actually make the size in between with the TOOL mod, using the option ”scale” (excuse me if I am wrong my game is in swedish lol). But you will need to figure out which number is the original size, after that you can add for example 1.5 (if normal size is 1) and press ”ok” and it will become a size in between the one bigger and normal size if that makes sense.
I’ve been playing Sims 4 since January 2014 and I’ve always struggled with building! I would never make my own houses because of it. I knew a couple tips from this article, but so many others provided the a-ha moments I needed!! I think I’m going to start practicing building again with these tips and maybe I can eventually make some houses or lots I’d be happy to play with my sims in 😊
BUTTON CHANGES FOR PS4/CONSOLE PLAYERS: 1) for the first tip, instead of CTRL, click triangle and it’ll switch the Walls Drawing Tool to a walls delete, draw on the walls want to delete in the same way you’d draw new ones, and it should delete them for you. 2) to get the text box where you’ll put your cheat codes (a la bb.move objects on), hit L1/L2/R1/R2 at once. To close it when you’re done you can just hit Circle. 3) Wanna free place? Once “bb.moveobjects on” has been inputted, click on an item to move. Once you’ve picked it up, tap L2 a few times and you’ll get the options to work w the Full Grid, Half Grid, or Free Placement. Switch between them as you like! 4) not sure how to change the camera on console 🙁 5) To raise and lower objects: hold L2/R2 and then use your directional arrow buttons (the up/down/left/right arrows on the left of your controller) to get them where you want. A couple objects won’t move (some mirrors give me issues) but most will! 6) SIZE UP AND DOWN by holding L2/R2 and using your left or right directional arrows (similar to the raising/lowering items trick!) 7) TO swap flooring direction: have one tile of the flooring selected and hit triangle. That’ll swap the direction your flooring (ex. hardwood) is going. Do this on one tile and go from there, as it wont flip if you have the entire room’s flooring selected first! 8) to do whole floor vs one tile, L1 and R1 let you switch between single tile and entire room. Same buttons for doing wallpaper. 9) do flooring arrows (1/4 of a grid tile) by hitting Square.
I was messing around with shift click on a item and for fun I set a punching bag as my head. When I reset the punching bag on my head, the bag, not my character, it was just placed there next to my sim. When I went into build mode the area that it needed to be placed was massive. I thought it was a strange feature.
Thank you Kayla for making this article. There were things that for the past year and a half I’ve been trying to figure out how to do but sometimes trying to word what I want to do just doesn’t work in searching for it. I hope that makes since? That draw to remove a wall once one of the things I keep seeing you and other builders do.
Great tips, thank you! I downloaded the base game yesterday and have already learned a lot. I have played the Sims 2 and 3 and remember that you could download mods (that’s what it’s called right?) to get clothes and furniture that you wanted without buying different packs. Is that still possible? Where can I do that? Could you do a article about that? 🙂
Tysvm for all the useful and unknown information 🎉 I have subscribed as well. I’d like to know how when you create a sim or home and you want to add to the gallery – how do you find what packs all the items used came from (also items from the sims resource). I love creating and want to share but this is my drawback. Ty!
Okay this one might be for the technischians in our community, I’ve got a laptop with an intel i5 core where I play the sims 4 on, but it’s just so incredibly laggy. The official EA website says that you need at least an intel i5 core for the game to work properly, but does anyone maybe have tips on how to improve or maybe even solve this?? I would really appreciate it ! <33
For my computer to get the cheats bar I found out that I have to hold “ctrl + shift + c + the windows key.” The way you showed it randomly stopped working and it took a while for me to figure out how to do it again. I hope this helps someone else out. Great article otherwise, definitely use some of these tips for my gameplay.
I just cannot use the Sims 3 camera. I never played any of the sims before the Sims 4 and I got used to the default camera before I even bothered building. Now, I just use the Sims 3 camera for a short time when I’m free rotating objects. Yah, there’s no way to do it with the Sims 4 camera. It’s so annoying. Thanks for the tips article! I actually didn’t realize you could alt raise a roof. I expected to have heard all of these tips before, but that was one I was unaware of.
Soo something I noticed well I tried to size up objects in my game is that on my keyboard that trick doesn’t work so if anyone else’s keyboard just doesn’t allow that trick try instead pressing like any key on your keyboard and or google it for me I need to press Å to size it up and I think it was ‘ or something to size it down so just yeah just wanted to help kinda your welcome if this did help❤
I love to try all of this hacks but the problem is when building you have to move your camera alot to get better angles which is understandable but i get so dizzy with the camera movements that by the time i finish i am really dizzy as heck but don’t get me wrong i loved playing sims even with this issue i just don’t move the camera that much or play for long periods
Just want to say that moving objects up and down, making them bigger or smaller have different keyboard keys depending on where you come from – as in which language is your default on the keyboard. For me the keys to make things bigger is “å” and smaller is a key above on the right of it ” ´ “. For up/down in my case it is the same as Simsie described 🙂 And maybe when you reach about 500h of gameplay you can start looking into mods you’d like, such as MC Command centre, or if you are more into building, Better Build Buy that will organise debug objects and live edit objects, and you can copy them by using the eyedropper, which you cannot with cheats only 🙂
I remember first time when I was playing The Sims 4, it was year ago, when game was on sale, so I bought it. Back then there was no tutorial (I mean there was, but I was thinking that im not gonna need it), so my first sim had a name “Marcin Borowik” (Polish name and lastname), and he had… Star Wars™ helmet on, yes, I didn’t know, that I didn’t deleted it, but I just switched between clotches for everyday, and clothes for swimming (sorry if you didn’t understanded im not from US!)
It’s very helpful, thank you! Sometimes it got a bit harder to understand, because English is not my main language and you are so excited, you talk fast haha😂. Also, I saw you use the custom wheel thing with the cabinets, but I don’t have that in my game and also no high cabinets 🤔. How is that possible?
In terms of sizing down objects, I ALWAYS do it with dollhouses for my toddler and child Sims! The dollhouses still function perfectly well a size or two smaller than normal because the animation is just the Sims sitting in front of them waving dolls around. It does still cast a shadow the size of the full sized dollhouse which is a little annoying but other than that I highly recommend doing that. ESPECIALLY with that giant tree shaped one. It’s so big, and for what??
Thank you, this was super helpful! I have loved building in The Sims since 2 (I’ve played off and on since The Sims debuted) but I have never been great at it. I am playing 4 for the first time, in 2024, and building has been frustrating (why no autoroofs????). Your tutorial articles have instantly made my builds less frustrating and more beautiful.
Thank you! Now I know how to place things on anything without floating/in the wall. Now I can clutter up. I am New creator🫶🏻 crystal pack getting for my birthday next week, my creations will have everything/will do base game stuff eventually. I don’t have twitch but perusal your streams while playing is a huge vibe 💛
Kayla. I have been dealing with my camera jumping me away every time I press the 9 key for MONTHS. MONTHS! I almost didn’t watch this article bc I was like oh I’ve been playing the sims 4 since release I don’t need tips! I had NO IDEA pressing control would fix that issue for me I feel so silly I’ve gone this long just accepting my fate 🤦♀️ THANK YOU
Ugh I love that trick of moving the counter or table and trying to guess where the objects go and then putting the counter back. But I find myself avoiding doing it as often as I can because it’s soooo annoying and I suck at guessing where the things should go. I found a mod that adds an invisible shelf which is pretty helpful
Oh god, this article is worth it for the roof tips alone. Placing and shaping roofs can be SO ANNOYING! I didn’t even know about things like adjusting only ONE side of a roof at once (GOOD LORD I could’ve used that in my last build! The main thing that took up all the time was the roof driving me crazy) or complicated multi-curves…AND THE FRIEZES! I almost never use them because they place stupidly! Now they might actually get used!
As Xbox player, It took mi a long time to figure these things out, so I’m gonna write how to do some of these hacks from the article on Xbox. (For PS players it should be the same, but the buttons have different names, but I’m not sure, srry ❤) 1. The wall erasure- just pres Y and draw over it again as you see in the article 2. Just press RB RL and LT RT all at once and with that you open the cheat panel then just write the cheat, this particular cheat works any time, but if you want money cheat then write: testingcheats on/true 3. You can change object placing by pressing RT 4. I honestly never tried this, so I don’t know and I’m lazy to load to game rn 😂 5. Hold together LT and RT and press the up and down buttons 8. Same as the rising just press the left or right button 9. Same as in the 3. 10. When you’re drawing it like in the article, press Y. If you’re doing it all at once with one click, it doesn’t work 11. You can change this with LB and RB buttons 13. Hold X when you’re adjusting the side you want 14. 15. and 16. Unfortunately I don’t know, so if someone knows this pls let me know 😂 Others are just the same as in the article ❤
Anyone know if/how this can be done on console (XB1)? Specifically the thing where you can raise & lower I objects with the 0 & 9 keys, and the wall drawing thing where she holds down Ctrl & redraws over the wall to delete it? Perhaps there’s a article out there someone could point me towards? (It’s no easy feat finding Console Simmers on YT).
Tips articles would be very useful please. I have watched you, James Turner, Delicacy, Dr Gluon and many others for years. I have not been able to play myself because I couldn’t afford the game. I did enjoy perusal you and others in the community play though. I just downloaded the free version yesterday and I am excited to play myself.
I knew a lot of these by perusal your article’s for years. There is just one little detail. Not all hot keys work the same on my computer. For example the 9 and 0 key is a different one on my laptop. Also you don’t have to type ‘bb.moveobjects on’ you can just type ‘bb.moveobjects’. Just some little tips. I liked perusal this because some things I forgot.
