Interior design construction can speed up the process by optimizing floor plans, determining the best placement of rooms, furnishings, and fixtures, and marketing your business. Interior designers are experts in optimizing floor plans and can help builders maximize layout and ensure efficient use of space. They can also help with marketing your business by increasing your online presence.
The first step in the interior design process is to determine where to place electrical outlets for lighting fixtures, figure out where plumbing fixtures would be best suited, determine whether a space is too large for the desired furnishings, choose materials for cabinets, flooring, countertops, and more, and consider where specific furniture will be placed and installed.
To make a new construction home feel homey, owners should invest in sumptuous textures like wool, velvet, and marble, pick out paintings and artwork that complement the home’s appearance, and change light fixtures, frame bathroom mirrors, add wallpaper, landscape, paint, and upgrade doors.
To give a new build home some character, interior designers can add subtle architectural features for a timeless feel, choose a color palette, incorporate textures, add accent pieces, prioritize comfort, and utilize smart technologies like solar panels and smart meters. By following these tips, interior designers can create a unique and comfortable home that showcases their expertise and creativity.

Can I do interior design myself?
If you’re creative and have the time to research, you don’t need to hire a professional interior designer to design your home. They’re only needed for structural changes in your house, and you can decide on other aspects. Here are actionable ideas to design a home without hiring an interior designer:
- Use space efficiently to maximize your living experience.
- Create a functional layout that maximizes the use of your space.
- Consider the overall aesthetic appeal of your home and consider the potential benefits of hiring an interior designer.
Where do I start decorating my new home?
To create a cohesive and inviting room, start by decorating with large, statement pieces such as a bed frame, sofa, and dining table. This will make it easier to add items and ensure they don’t interfere with the overall decor. Consider adding a special plant in the corner of the living room before adding wall art.
Invest in quality items like sofas and dining tables to avoid replacing them every year. Research and choose the best one for your home. Personal photos can make a house a home, and the Learning Center offers inspiration for framing family, wedding, pet, or favorite art pieces. Upload your photos to the site, choose the appropriate size for your wall space, and design your frame. This will bring a smile every time you pass by and make your home a welcoming space.
Can I teach myself interior design?
Design school is a crucial step towards professional practice in interior design, according to David Harper, associate dean at the New York School of Interior Design. Attending design school offers a holistic view of the industry and the craft, focusing on techniques, schematics, and compositions. It also forces students to study topics that a layperson may not consider, such as art history, color theory, and specific computer programs. Maria Lomanto, president of ASID New York Metro and founding principal of DesignGLXY, urges that attending school is essential for those pursuing interior design and not just decorating.
She believes that learning about building standards, codes, health safety, welfare, and lighting through experience would be slow and arduous, and any experience gained prior to classwork would not count towards qualifying for the exam.
How to make a new build feel cosy?
The author shares her top tips for creating a cozy lounge in a new build property, including painting the walls dark, adding texture, creating history with vintage pieces, creating a focal point with a gallery wall, and adding different light sources. She has been working with clients near Halifax for years and has shared the final reveal of their girl’s room, boy’s room, and playroom. The clients wanted to add personality to their lounge and transform it into a welcoming, comfy family room.
The room was small and had an angle door, making layout planning tricky. The TV was initially positioned opposite the door, but it made more sense to move it to the door wall, allowing for a large 4 seater sofa facing it and incorporating another small sofa opposite the window.
The author emphasizes the importance of using dark colors, textures, vintage pieces, a gallery wall, and different light sources to create a cocooning, cosy feel in a new build property. By following these tips, the author can help clients bring their new build homes to life and create a welcoming and comfortable space for their family.

How do I start an interior design concept?
The key steps to developing an interior design concept include identifying goals, gathering inspiration, adding personal experiences, defining style, choosing colors, selecting materials, planning the layout, and incorporating various elements such as function, mood, color, texture, lighting, and furniture. A well-developed concept can guide design decisions and create a cohesive and harmonious environment.
The most important step is empathizing by defining the requirements, needs, and desires of the space. This helps in prioritizing and planning. Understanding the story of the space, its functionality post-design, and the network of people connected to it is crucial for detailing. A survey sheet should be prepared, considering both inside and outside spaces, neighboring culture and lifestyle, and site feasibility.
These steps, along with documentation, ensure a smoother process and a cohesive and harmonious environment. By following these steps, one can create a well-rounded and effective interior design concept.
How do I start designing a new house?
In order to adequately prepare for the construction of a residential dwelling, it is essential to first ascertain the financial resources available and subsequently compile a comprehensive inventory of the requisite materials and components. It is recommended that you engage in a period of conceptualisation and visualisation, which may entail the creation of a preliminary plan, the development of a layout, the production of detailed blueprints and the consideration of design elements. It is important to be realistic about the figures involved and to identify and prioritize the essential requirements.
How to start decorating a new build?
New homeowners often ask if they can decorate their new build house immediately, but the answer is yes. However, it’s important to take time to complete the work. The settling time is crucial as newly built houses often need time to “settle”, allowing construction materials to adapt to the environment. This can affect how walls absorb paint or how wallpaper adheres. Soft furnishings like cushions, throws, and bed linens can also transform a room’s ambiance.
Play around with colors and patterns to find a combination that resonates with your style. Despite the excitement of moving into a new build house, it’s important to take a bit of time to carry out the work, as it allows the construction materials to adapt to the environment and create a cohesive look.

All great ideas. We actually had a 1920s tutor home and the real estate agent suggested we remove the mullions, square off the entry arch and paint all of the restored base boards and solid doors to attract younger buyers that like new build feel. We of course changed realtors and our home sold in 1 day in a very flat market. Depersonalizing your home for sale is different that removing unique character and charm😊
Kristen, I’m new to your website and I can honestly say your articles have changed the game for me!!! I’m currently living abroad and getting so so so excited to go home to Scotland next year and use all of your tips & tricks to create a space I love! Your articles are incredibly well made and presented in a digestible & accessible way for design noobs like me! Congratulations on a fantastic website and all of your stunning designs 👏🏼❤
OMG ❤ I’m looking for something similar things to this article now in marketplace because of your brilliant ideas Kristen. I super love the way you put things together. You make our house look so charming. Seriously! Like all people visits me, says your home smells and looks expensive. Thank you! Kristen❤
Look at 2: 30 left picture and see how a normal edge of two walls was transformed into a built-in open hook closet. That alone creates So much character! And the construct seems to be real simple. Just diagonally place board, where it’s not closet 🙂 Make sure the crowning of the ceiling continues and create a framework around it.
At 3: 43 right picture, we see a room, that perhaps originally consisted of two rooms. By not taking out the entire wall, but leave something in a playful design up the ceiling and to the left or right or both, you get the openness and light of one space, and yet the enclosure of two separate rooms. Wow!
I’m glad I found your website. I need to overhaul my home, but I don’t want to do something too trendy that might not be trendy when I sell, and I want to DIY on a budget so when I do sell, which should be within a few years, it won’t be something that the next owners won’t appreciate and possibly just redo. I think the ideas within will solve lots of my questions.
Kristen, would love your opinion. I have a back door that I’m just not sure what to put on it. I had the inside blind mount but we purchased a new door & it doesn’t fit now. I don’t want blinds that are just going to sway every time the door is opened. It has a long window & I need something with privacy. Anyone that has an idea would be great. I’ve looked at so many options & I’m so torn at this point. 😕
This article really hit home!! I’ve been in my home 31 years. (Popcorn ceilings)😮 So many great ideas here I’ve been wanting to try. Softer simple drapes, picture molding, changing out large bathroom mirrors. Oh my😊 I wish I had the talent to choose decorations wisely, and to know what exactly to purchase at Lowe’s. Materials paint etc. Love all your ideas!! Carol in South Carolina ❤
The family room is optically beautiful but no comfortable. Sectionals are awkward for lounging on and the accent chairs, while really cool, are not chairs you can sink into and watch television. That said, this may be more of a conversation space and any serious, game day, tv viewing takes place in theater room or other space?
Very nice, but I would have added some color in the dining room curtains that would echo what’s in the lounge area. It’s way too white. Darker curtains would also be a better backdrop for the heavy/dark table and chairs. I prefer that you look at the camera. It feels like you are talking to me instead of someone I can’t see off to the side. Best from Indiana!
Very interesting article. It is very important to know that one doesn’t need to completely renovate and redo their first home. Once settled, one must know how to use every space in the house; one of the best ways is to buy things like furniture accordingly. I am very glad to announce that Stiely Design provides custom interior design services. Anyone can take help from them. Thanks
That sectional is two totally different shades! Lol it’s not like it’s a lighting or shadowy issue, it’s like a one is more beige in undertone while the other is more yellow in undertone issue. Reminds me of my dad’s old sectional that I kinda hated bc of the low back! My eyes also can’t help but notice there’s a serious need for height variance in that space… the easy option being some kind of “wall jewelry” flanking the fireplace…pref. asymetrically, decent height lol. This room feels uncomfortable and outta balance to me, and for some reason I’m over here just sharing my opinions like they’re gold af! lol there are elements that are lovely as well.
