The 2020 Minnesota Residential Code is a custom code book published by the International Code Council (ICC) and includes Minnesota’s amendments. It sets minimum construction standards throughout all of Minnesota, including cities, townships, and counties. The code requires that the grade away from foundation walls must fall a minimum of 6 inches within the first 10 feet, and where slopes or physical barriers prevent this, drains or swales must be provided.
Cantilevered foundation walls supporting backfill without lateral support at the top of the foundation must meet the requirements of Table 5-4. Stairways must not be less than 36 inches in width with a 7-3/4-inch maximum riser (height) and a 10-inch minimum run (depth). The wall should consist of drywall, a polyethylene vapor barrier, JM Spider insulation in 2×6 stud walls, 1/2-inch plywood sheathing, and weather protection.
The code also requires adhesion of masonry veneer on exterior stud walls, which must be installed not less than 4 inches above the earth or 2 inches above paved surfaces.
