In A Bedroom Decor, Should Both Nightstands Be The Same?

A bed is the focal point of a sleeping area, and it’s essential to choose a suitable unit that complements your bedroom decor. Nightstands don’t have to match for a cohesive look in the bedroom, but they can add visual interest and personalize the space. Mixing furnishings up can create visual interest, and there are plenty of ways to make mismatched nightstands look home and stylish in your bedroom.

Choosing the right nightstand for your bed is a dance – you’re blending functionality, style, and personal preferences. By striking the right balance, you can find a nightstand that complements your bedroom’s features. The answer depends on your personal style, overall decor scheme, functional needs, and the specific characteristics of your bedroom. If you prefer a traditional, balanced look and value simplicity, matching nightstands could be a great choice.

Mixing the nightstand with round, oval, square, rectangle, or live edge shapes is the quickest and probably easiest way to instantly create visual interest. The nightstand should complement other pieces in the room like your bed, dresser, and other furniture pieces. Note that the word “complement” should be used, not “match”.

Most people think two nightstands are a must, but sometimes just one might be all you need. Mismatched nightstands can be a great addition to your bedroom, but it’s important to ensure that your bed frame (or headboard) and bedside tables are not in exactly the same finish.

In summary, choosing the right nightstand for your bedroom depends on your personal style, decor scheme, functional needs, and the specific characteristics of your bedroom. Mixing and matching nightstands can create a room with visual interest that reflects your personal style.

Should both bedside tables match?

The juxtaposition of disparate design styles can infuse a space with a sense of playfulness and individuality, particularly when it comes to the choice of nightstands.

Is it better to have one or two bedside tables?

Shared bedside tables are ideal for couples as they provide a space for important evening items. If space is limited, a single bedside table can save space. However, if possible, two bedside tables are recommended for balance and utility. Matching nightstands can also create a sense of balance.

Choosing the color of your bedside table should consider the room’s design and color schemes. Light white or silver can complement dark bedding and beds, while lighter colors increase possibilities. Classic white or cream tables can complement any style, while dark wood or colored tables can add a striking touch. White is the standard color for bedside tables, but consider other furniture and décor options to avoid a gloomy room. Matching nightstands can also create a unique look.

Should end tables match in bedroom?

Matching and mismatching coffee tables and end tables can create a visually balanced space, while mixing styles can add character and depth to the decor. The choice depends on personal preference and design goals. Matching creates cohesion and symmetry, simplifies decision-making, and simplifies the decorating process. However, it can also result in a lack of variety and a predictable design, as a fully matched set may lack visual interest and personality. Mixing styles can add creativity and depth to the decor. Overall, the choice between matching and mismatching depends on personal preference and overall design goals.

To create a cohesive bedroom design, blend two pieces with the same finish, even if they are different sizes or shapes. Balance with accessories by pairing similar artwork, mirrors, lamps, and linens on the bed to downplay differences between nightstands.

Some couples may struggle with matching nightstands due to space limitations, different preferences, or transitional rooms. To address this issue, consider pairing similar styles, such as traditional, elegant, or cottage, and pair pieces that coordinate based on that style. Another option is to choose pieces from the same manufacturer or line of furniture and opt for different shapes.

In summary, blending different pieces with similar finishes, balancing with accessories, and choosing a unique design can help create a cohesive and visually appealing bedroom. By incorporating similar styles and choosing pieces from the same manufacturer or line, couples can find a solution that suits their needs and preferences.

Is it OK to have mismatched end tables?

There is no design rule that dictates the placement of tables in a living room. However, matching tables can create a sophisticated and elegant look, but excessive symmetry can make the room appear like a catalog. Instead, carefully combining different table styles and shapes can create a unique look that stands out. Experimenting with materials, designs, and colors can give the room a unique personality.

There are several ideas to quickly mix and match living room accent tables to elevate the look of the living area. These ideas can make the room feel more eclectic and welcoming, making it feel more comfortable and inviting. Should you have one or two end tables?

The ideal number of end tables in a living room design depends on the size of the room and seating arrangement. Do both side tables have to match?

Experimenting with materials, designs, and colors can give your living room a unique personality that complements your own.

What does Feng Shui say about bedside tables?

What does Feng Shui say about bedside tables?

Feng shui advises that bedside tables should be clean, have two on both sides of the bed, and be of round shapes to radiate positive energy. These tables should be lower than the top level of mattresses and help to organize scattered items. Sleeping beside plants at night is beneficial as they increase oxygenation levels and reduce carbon dioxide, promoting a calm sleep. Small-sized indoor plants can be placed next to the bed.

The best lamps for feng shui are incandescent and LED bulbs, which provide warmth and ambient lighting. Nightstand lamps can be placed beside the bed to provide light and add elegance to the room. These tips can help improve overall feng shui and promote a harmonious and peaceful sleep.

Can you have non-matching bedside tables?

Mismatched bedside tables can be a stylish and versatile addition to any bedroom. Mix oversized tables with drawers and smaller tables with minimal storage, or choose two delicate end tables that complement each other. When selecting nightstands, consider the scale in relation to the bed’s height, as larger tables are needed for chunky frames and smaller, delicate tables for minimalist frames. The height of the bed should also be considered, as too high or low tables may make reaching objects difficult. Additionally, consider the overall style of the room, as choosing nightstands that complement the rest of your furniture can create a balanced and considered look.

How to use two different nightstands?

When mixing and matching nightstands, it is essential to maintain a cohesive style and common materials to maintain a unified visual motif. Keep the nightstands related by having touches of the same material present in both. If you have two nightstands with similar looks but contrasting finishes, coordinate between them using two main metals and two main wood types. If you want to mix and match nightstands but still like symmetry, consider purchasing nightstands from the same furniture collection and matching the color or material of your bed frame.

Experiment with shapes and heights to add functionality to your nightstands. For example, one side can have a smaller side table with one drawer and shelf, while the other side can be a higher and wider side with three drawers. Having fun with shapes is another way to add visual variety. One side can be a rectangle with shelves and drawers, while the other side can be a round shape for display pieces. Alternatively, you can use a full-sized nightstand with a drawer on one side for storage and a smaller round/square side table for device storage.

  • Thank you for this list! My primary bedroom is set up for a California King with symmetrical windows on each side of where the large bed would end. We use a queen, so it becomes an awkward space, i.e. do the nightstands go under the windows (and are too far from the bed) or do I put the nightstands next to the bed and they are halfway under the windows. Add to that, an HVAC register is right where one of the nightstands would go. The design at 2 minutes with the wraparound divider might be a solution, will have to look for something like that. Thank you!

  • Hi Julie, Did you create a article for displaying pictures of relatives that have passed on? I was looking to get your advice on this issue and Feng Shui. I see many many differing opinions on this. Some FS experts say never display photos of relatives or friends that have passed as it introduces bad energy into your house. Others say you can place photos in southern wall or north facing wall so faces are looking south and frame with gold. I have lost quite a few family members that were very important to me to either old age or suicide. I had there pictures all together in one place in the house as their smiles made me feel like they were with me again. But I did notice health issues started developing for me and took them all down and stored in the garage. I miss their faces when I pass that area in the house. What are your thoughts on this? Thank you.

  • Nice nightstands. I like the ones with a support at the ends so things don’t slide off those sloped ends! Rectangular are the best for a good amount of surface area. Two drawers are a must. It’s easier to pull out a drawer from your bed than reaching into an bottom open space. Make sure those drawers glide smoothly. Nice work again here Julie!!! 🥰Happy Independence Day🇺🇸 !!

  • I always love the pictures you illustrate your articles with. One thing though, I always think about poison arrows so much since I started perusal your website, so much so that, not only do I see them in certain pictures in this article, but the other night I woke up and my husband was asleep next to me on his back with his hands under his head so that his elbow was pointing right at me, and I thought “This is a poison arrow!” — He’s very tall and lean so the arrow was extra sharp :😂😭

  • Julie! You are so talented and so many of your ideas resonate with my tastes as well. So glad I found your website. Can you give me ideas of colors for nightstands and long dresser to go with my shabby chic type bed? I don’t like matchy-matchy. We are moving this weekend and I have been looking for weeks! Thank you.

  • Once again, sooo timely for me! I literally was just thinking today of finding someone to strip my two drawer dark nightstands, and making them a whitewashed oak color! They have two deep curved drawers, with a different wood grain from the frame. At present, they are directly on the floor, but I realized that I was attracted to the nightstands you showed, that had legs. My bedroom is very small, so the ones with legs to open up the space, is appealing for me. As that is so easily fixed, if I get them refinished to a lighter stain, I’ll be able to reuse! There were so many of these nightstands that appealed to me. I’m looking into one of the smaller ones, for my living room end tables. The ones I have now, from a previous location, are overpowering in my new space!
