There is no universal standard for how a key turns to unlock a door, but turning it further toward the locked direction can cause the lock to jam. If the key can turn a short distance past the full locked position, rotate it back in a smooth motion to overcome the jam.
Lubricate the lock with a grease-free lubricant like graphite powder or WD40, as oil can jam the lock once it dries out. A single spray or squeeze should be enough, but too much can be counterproductive.

Why is my lock not opening with the key?
Locks can often be locked due to improper cutting of keys. If the key cannot turn, it may be due to the improper cut. A new key may be needed to open the home. Ensure the key is correctly positioned within the lock before returning it. If the key won’t go all the way into the lock, it may be due to obstructions such as corroded pins or worn-out pin chambers. Research before attempting to fix this issue, as mistakes can cause damage to the lock or door.
In most cases, it’s better to call a locksmith. If you want to try fixing the issue yourself, coat the key in powdered graphite or a graphite spray, which acts as a lubricant to unjam lock tumblers that may have become clogged with debris over time.
Why won’t my door unlock from the outside?

Unlocking a locked bedroom door can be challenging, especially if the locking mechanism is stiff or jammed. To unlock the door, insert a credit card or driver’s license into the space between the lock and door frame and apply pressure to push it against the locking mechanism. How do you push a key out of a lock from the outside?

How do you get a key out of a lock without breaking it?
Keys often get stuck in locks due to the need for lubrication. Silicon spray can be used for regular lock maintenance. Spray the spray directly into the keyhole and gently wiggle the key to release it. Press the nozzle up to the keyhole and squeeze the plastic bottle to release puffs of graphite powder around the key. Jiggle the key gently as the powder fills the lock. Pull the key out as soon as it loosens. If the plug is loose, it may move within the cylinder and not align the pin tumblers.
Is there a key that opens any lock?
A “master” key is a combination of individual keys for a lock, allowing staff to access all locks in a facility. This key is used to prevent unauthorized access to a locked area, such as a gymnasium locker room. The master key has three pins, aligning the first split in the set and the second split. This reduces the complexity of the key, making it easier to pick or decode. The pinning patterns used in these “mastered” locks are predictable and common, ensuring their security. Over time, these predictable and common pinnings have been recorded, making master keys effective try-out keys for field work.
Why is my key not unlocking?
It is not uncommon for manual car keys to malfunction for a number of reasons. A stiff and difficult-to-open lock can be caused by dirt and dust buildup, which can clog the locking mechanism. To fix this, apply graphite spay or silicone-based lubricant to the lock, then turn the key a few times. Avoid using oil-based products like WD-40, as they can cause clogging later.
UPVC doors can be difficult to lock or open, often due to alignment issues. These doors are designed to be adjustable but can slip or drop out of position. A trained locksmith can usually fix this issue. If the locking mechanism is faulty when the door is open, new parts may be required.
To insert a key, ensure the right key is used and that the problem is not caused by a poorly cut key. Use a reputable locksmith when getting new keys cut. If the problem lies with the key or the lock, investigate the issue with a locksmith and may require a new one. If the lock is at fault, a new one may be needed.
How to open a door if there is a key on the other side?
Unlocking a door with a key on the other side is possible if the door has a frictioned cylinder lock or an emergency function. These locks are designed to be unlocked with a key, even if another key is inside on the opposite side. To test this, try using a spare key. If the key inside the door is in a vertical position, it may be possible to push it out by gently tapping it. However, success depends on chance.
If stuck, stay calm, explore alternative entry points like backdoors or open windows, try using a spare key if the lock has an emergency function, and if all else fails, contact a professional locksmith for assistance without causing damage.

Worked a treat, thanks….’good on ya mate! as i believe you Antipodeans say! 🙂 Would like to add one point, to not order replacement until old one is removed as measurements regarding the placement of cam are different in a number of models. These dimensions are shown on sites, such as Amazon when ordering.
This article helped me replace the lock in a used door that I purchased. In Australia, thin doors typically use the 46mm euro lock while thicker doors use the longer 63mm lock. The job of breaking the lock is easier if you use 2 pairs of multigrip pliers with an assistant on the other side of the door bending the lock at the same time and in the same direction. The screw hole being the weak point in the lock is where you apply force. Multigrips with wide jaws (10mm) are best suited to this task.
Thanks heaps mate, was so annoying with the locked door of the new place when my vendor didnt give the key. To those who are having a go at Bill, please think it on the positive side…i am a noob knowing nothing about this and thanks to Bill and you guy, i now know that i should need an anti snap lock. Burglars dont need to see this article to be a burglar, right:)
Fantastic article and helped greatly. I would just like to add that I just could not get the little tag to turn round to open. So i used recip saw hacksaw to cut out the screw, which holds the eurolock in, which then fell out leaving the slot clear to just slide a new lock in, get it in position then open. This may help someone struggling like me! But the article was just fab thanks.
Hi Bill, Great article but what if there are no screws to access for the removal of the cover plates, what then. My daughter has the sliding laundry door locked and no key for it. She has the same lock system on the back patio sliding door (different key unfortunately) and I can see the two screws on the inside part that goes into the frame. No other screws visible.
