How To Turn Off The Chevy Silverado’S Interior Lighting?

Matt Watson, Sales Professional at Don Hattan Chevrolet, explains how to override the dome light in a Chevrolet Silverado. The interior lights are programmed to control the vehicle’s interior. To fix the issue, follow these steps:

  1. Check the dome light switch, steering column, and dial.
  2. Check the overhead console and over the rear seats.
  3. Check the door sensors and fuse box.
  4. Understand the role of the Body Control Module (BCM).
  5. Turn on the dome light using the dial to the left of the steering wheel.
  6. Check the switch in the overhead console that controls the lights.
  7. Check the pin switches on the doors.
  8. If one is stuck in the “door open” position, the lights will turn off.
  9. If the issue is caused by a faulty door jamb switch, try pushing the override button or headlight dimmer to see if the lights go out and stay off.

In a Silverado, pressing the dome light button three times will turn off all the lights. Proper diagnosis and inspection of each component are essential for finding a permanent solution.

  • I just got my truck back a few days ago from the dealership doing some work on it,, and I thought they had screwed up my dome light. I guess they had turned off the light to save the battery. Good thing I found this article, or I would be making a trip to the stupid dealership for them to fix what wasn’t broken. Thank You!

  • LOL, in my 2000 i was used to pushing in the long button to turn off the dome, couldn’t get the 2013 to work. I was getting online to order a new switch for my 2013 and watched your article first, didn’t even know there was a switch on top! saved me money and time. Thanks for taking the time to record article!!

  • I know that this article is 7 years old. I’ve owned my used truck for 18 months and was Googling a replacement switch when I found this article as the first result. Like everyone else in the comments, I had no idea that the upper half of the dome light control was a push button. Thank you for the concise and helpful information!

  • Yes this helped me. My battery just went dead. Wasn’t hard to start, or any other sign of a weak battery. My volt meter was at 14 last time I drove the truck. The battery just went dead one morning I had no power. I couldn’t even cycle the locks. I changed the battery and everything was running great. However my volt meter was dropping below 14V so I brought it to the dealer and was told the charging system was fine. Then I noticed the dome lights would not go on when I turned off the truck. I don’t remember even hitting that switch. Maybe the mechanic pushed it. Bottom line, I pushed the switch and it’s now working again. Thanks very much.

  • Well thank you sir…. I had the same problem… I knew about the long protruding switch, but did not notice the flush mount off/on switch…. I also asked a mechanic friend who did not know what to do…. We were on the verge of looking for a bad fuse or wiring harness problem….As soon as we seen what you did, the wife and I ran out to the truck as fast as we could to do what you showed…. Thank you very much….. kindest regards…. Ron

  • Than you thank you thankyou. I had just finished replacing the door $200 lock mechanisms on my 2011 chevy Silverado and upon completion of an aggravating job i noticed the dome light was not coming on when the door opened up, thought I may have broken something in the new lock switch until I saw your vid. I must have leaned against it.

  • Thank you; I’d been a service advisor at several auto dealerships for many years and had previously owned a Silverado with a different interior light switch. I bought this 2007 used Sierra last month and had inadvertently pushed this switch which made the dome lights become inoperative. I checked the owners manual for my Sierra and repeatedly tried getting the domelights to come on with the doors open but still couldn’t figure out why they wouldn’t. After perusal your article I realized that the problem was due to my not realizing this upper button was actually the switch to turn the domelights either “on” or “off” with the doors locked or unlocked.
