This guide provides a step-by-step guide on how to remove a Yale door knob safely and efficiently. It covers both locking and non-locking types of door knobs, as well as how to change or remove a door knob without visible screws. The Yale residential lock requires turning the inside knob 45 degrees to align the retainer tab with the poke hole. The knob should be directly in line with the latch when at rest.
To replace an existing knob, determine which category it falls into and use a tiny flat head to pop it off. If there are visible screws on the trim plate, unscrew them, unscrew the latch from the door edge, and remove all pieces. If you can’t see any screws, remove the knob first.
To remove a locked door knob from the outside, follow these basic steps: Interior Access, Locate Fasteners, Tricky Removal, and FAQs. Push a pin or nail into the hole on the side of the interior handle, then release and slide the handle off. Once the retainer is depressed, pull the inside lever off and remove the inner rose plate.
To release the latch, put the key in the cylinder and turn it to an obscure angle. First, remove the screw in the black cover on the inside face of the lock, then lift the cover off. Next, remove the batteries and the Z wave chip.

Thank you; of all the articles I watched, yours came up on top and saved my day because I am a female with no clue how I was going to remove the lock. I had almost resigned myself to calling a home improvement guy (which I certainly cannot afford to do at this time) when I came across your article that showed me exactly what to do; the knobs are off at last! Thank you so much!!!:goodvibes:
NOTE: Some inside knobs do not have a “press in” catch that’s used to release the knob. Mine has a tiny 3/32″ hex screw that requires loosening (after which you need to remove the hex driver) THEN the knob will slide off effortlessly. I found this out after an hour or two of looking for a catch like the ones in all these YouTube articles, a catch that requires just pressing in for a ‘click’ which releases the knob. I have no idea how unusual the hex screw-type catch is, but it is very real. I used it on two door lock mechanisms that were loose and required removal of the inside knob for access to the two main screws for tightening..
1:08 You had the door open; ours is stuck shut. You have easy access to the pin slot; ours was inches away from the doorframe very much on the wrong side at the worst angle. You had the pin work effectively; ours did absolutely nothing even with a hammer. We had one on the outside but it also did not work. We finally tore apart the faceplate with pliers after which we were able to force the handle off on the outside. The door magically opened – who knows why – and thus we were able to unscrew pieces starting with the outside allowing us to remove the entire setup.
Thanks Bill. This worked just as you said, enabling me to remove a failed bedroom door knob mech. I’m off to the hardware store now to buy a replacement. Without your article advise my next move would have been to use an angle grinder (the mech is stuffed anyway) but your way is so much more civilized. Cheers.
Thank you so much. Took a while to find this clip but well worth it . I didn’t know if I was going to break something but perusal this assured me of the right action to get the knob off. Enabled me to spray lubricant into the mechanism therefore no need to replace the lock. Bunnings should create a library of these clips
I’m having THE worst time getting this bathroom handle off, I poked at the hole in the handle hard, held my foot against the door trying to pull the handle out at th same time and nothing 🤬 I tried poking at the tiny hole there’s nothing that can go in that hole smh I gotta look for more articles. I just bought a new house and everything is costing so much I have to do some work myself. I pray I don’t have to hire anyone to do this cause I have 5 doors I gotta do 😭
Thank you very much, in my case it was a small Allan screw that needed to be turned, not a pin. And it was a what I think you call a left-handed thread, you turn the screw counterclockwise to back it into the axle then take the handle off. In my case I just needed to tighten the screws that hold the assembly to the door… then putting the handle back on, you turn the Allan screw clockwise to bring it back into the knob to secure the knob to the axle.
Saved me a LOT of trouble with this article. Got locked in my own room – the latch mechanism got disconnected from the handle and its like 2 in the morning so I can’t really call anyone for assistance. Your instructions helped me take the handle apart, and then I realigned it with the latch when putting it back together! Thanks so much!
I’ve worked on houses, installed a BUNCH of doorknobs (uninstalled a bunch, too) and never seen one of these damned things!!! This one had no “hole” it was a perfectly flush, basically invisible button. Had to take a super bright light and go around and around with screwdriver to find it.. thanks to your article!!!
I need your help Bill. I followed your instructions but messed up when inserting the knob back in. I pushed it too far in and now the pinhole is no longer exposed. The knob is fully over the pin, leaving maybe a centimeter exposed between the knob and the rose. I didn’t realize until i installed everything back in. I tried doing re-doing everything but from the outside but I can’t remove the latch because screws to separate the two sides are on the side where the knob went too far in. Is this fixable?
My Kwikset must be from another planet because it does not have the pin, or the screws, or the allen screw, or the flat pin like thing, however, when the brass plate is popped off on the inside knob there is a lever on the outer edge that goes one way to release the whole thing, and the other way to lock it.
Still can’t do it, the knob simply does NOT want to come off. This new knob has me questioning all my years of being able to do home repairs and install anything at all. Once I finally got the stupid thing off I had a ton of trouble getting it back on again after installation, then after realizing the stupid thing didn’t bring the latch in far enough to open the door I couldn’t take it off again because now the fucking button is gone.
I am going to be in Yalda’s room when you come home. I don’t think I will be asleep because it will be freezing here with no blanket or anything but just incase I am sleep . Can you come in the room and grab me so that I can get in my room. I assume u will be here around 3 am. I will try to he awake. Thanks
