To change or remove a door knob without visible screws, follow these steps:
- Know your knob. Examine the lock side of the doorknob, looking for a tiny slot. If you need to replace a door knob that’s broken or stuck, disassemble and remove the existing one. This simple task can be done with or without screws, and both locking and non-locking types.
Removing a locked door knob from the outside can be tricky, especially when there are no visible screws. However, many modern door knobs are designed with a small latch near the base of the knob or handle. Push this latch in and pull the handle off the door. Next, find a small slot on the edge of the trim piece. The exterior door knob located on the other side of the door should have come loose. Hold and pull the knob away from the door. Unscrew the door latch and remove it from the door.
To remove your door knob, locate the hole underneath the doorknob shaft. Push the tip of a narrow screwdriver into the hole and slide it in the direction indicated. There is a small hole on the inside on the handle close to the base. Push the metal tab inside that hole to release the spring holding the knob.
Using a razor knife, nail, or nail set tool, drive the hinge pins out of the hinges. Use a 3/32″ hex key in the hole on the side of the indoor lever to loosen it. Pull the lever off, leaving a small gap around the rim. Pressing a paperclip into the hole will allow the knob to be pulled off.

NOTE: Some inside knobs do not have a “press in” catch that’s used to release the knob. Mine has a tiny 3/32″ hex screw that requires loosening (after which you need to remove the Allen wrench) THEN the knob will slide off effortlessly. I found this out after an hour or two of looking for a catch like the ones in all these YouTube articles, a catch that requires just pressing in for a ‘click’ which releases the knob. I have no idea how unusual the hex screw-type catch is, but it is very real. I used it on two door lock mechanisms that were loose and required removal of the inside knob for access to the two main screws for tightening..
Man, you just made me the hero to my partner. Been trying to figure out how to get our loose door handle apart to fix it, finally gave up and searched for a solution, your article came up first and within 1:52 min of your article I get the solution 😁 Getting the rosette off proved a bit more difficult than what it looked like in your article, it was tight, but I eventually got it to snap off and found that all three mounting screws were loose. Tightened those in 30 seconds, put it all back together, and we’re good to go! So thank you for sharing this, I owe you a beer, cheers! 👍🏼💥👏🏼👏🏼🙏🏻
my door knob in my house does not have any holes you can poke anything in what so every, the only thing I can see is a little slot on the face plate around the handle, but I tried with all my strength and that plate will not budge, how do you remove a door knob with no visible holes anywhere and with a face plate around the door handle with no holes nothing to pry it open with?
Great article! I was replacing 3 standard closet doorknobs and was STRUGGLING with the first one. I couldn’t figure out how to get the original knobs off. After an hour of trying, I had an epiphany and decided to go to YouTube. Clicked on your article and had the knob off in less than 2 minutes. Then the other 2 went even faster. 28 seconds was about right. Thanks for the tutorial…you saved me an entire afternoon of cursing, door-busting, and injuries.
Women have to start taking responsibility for the decisions they make. I thank God for giving me a father for schooling me on the way some men thinks especially the one’s with wrong motives. Please women start thinking of what the worst thing could happen to you if you put your security in the hands of anyone, and you have no backup security to keep you safe. A woman should always keep some cash and a credit/debit card with cash on it for emergencies especially if traveling. You should always have your own accessibility to food, travel, or anything you might need. If you can not do this keep your behind home or in a place of safety. Stop having these unrealistic expectations in ppl and get you some discernment. There are some real dangerous ppl out there.
HELP: I’ve been searching everywhere, I have two doors with the same no-screw, snug-fit dead latch and I want to replace them, but they will NOT budge. Unfortunately I did everything you’re NOT suppose to do which is leverage it from the rear of the latch (bending the latch in the door hole) and taking a hammer to the actual latch to loosen the latch (damaging the door). I’m under the impression that either the age/moisture of year after year caused it to cement itself, OR one of the previous owners GLUED this thing into place… any advice before I order a new door?
In the step where you inserted a screwdriver through the latch hole in order to pull out the latch, in my case the latch hole contains a white plastic part (and the part’s hole is square-shaped). Do I need to find a way to remove that plastic part (before using the screwdriver to pull on what remains)?
thanks for the great instructions..got the old handle off…but…the hole was a hair too small for the thingy so i have to rasp it to get it in…nothing is ever simple lol,,i have subbed your website because im just an old home owner that likes to learn to do things myself first before asking for help…only thing i wont mess with at this point in anything electrical lol…
thank you so much, I watched so many tutorials but your tutorial was the one that finally showed me what I was doing wrong. I am a renter and the cheap doorknob was completely stuck. I actually got locked in my bedroom when half of the doorknob just fell off one day and I had to McGyver my way out with tweezers. I was thinking I had to hire a handyperson, but I finally got it thanks to you. Could not be more grateful 🙂
