To change a cabin air filter in your vehicle, follow these steps:
- Locate the filter position in your vehicle’s manual.
- Remove the glove box or trim pieces to access the filter.
- Slide out the old filter and throw it in the trash.
- Place a new cabin air filter into the slot.
- Reassemble your trim pieces and glove box.
The cabin air filter helps trap and eliminate pollutants from the outside air before entering your car’s cabin, ensuring that debris doesn’t enter the vehicle’s ventilation system. It is easy to replace at home within a few minutes.
Safely park your vehicle on a flat, dry surface and ensure the hood is open. Most vehicles have a cabin air filter located inside the car. Remove the filter, replace it with the new one, and reinstall the plastic cover, hood weatherstripping, and windshield washer hose. Close the hood.
It is important to replace the cabin air filter at least once or twice to maintain the interior air quality of your vehicle. Most vehicle manufacturers recommend changing the filter every 12 months or 12,000 miles. If you live in a high dust or pollen environment, tighten up the air filter housing.
In summary, changing a cabin air filter is an easy and cost-effective maintenance task for your vehicle’s interior air quality.

Way more challenging than it looks, all because of the white slide pin located under the dash. Here’s some advice: some new cabin filters come with a tool to disengage the slide pin–keep that in your glove compartment as a reminder of how difficult this job is. That pin is hard to find, and will not come out using your fingers (hence the tool, or a flat-head screwdriver). Everything else is easy-peesy, up until you have to deal with that slide pin again, which is nearly impossible to get back into the correct spot for insertion. Combine this job with the same job for the Fusion, and FORD gets two thumbs down for pandering to their dealerships for making what should be an easy maintenance job cost over $150.
The clip that he doesn’t show is the impossible one. Mine was turned in such a way that it couldn’t slide out. It was against a stop. Ended up taking a screwdriver and hammer to it and breaking it. If I didn’t know better, I would say that Ford intentionally designs things to be difficult. I have changed hundreds of cabin filters. It should be a 3 minute job with no tools.
WHAT! WHAT! Great article but damn Ford . You couldn’t have done better. I can’t go through all that! And how much will it cost for the dealer to replace my filter? Out of the 9 cars I’ve ever bought I had no problem on finding and replacing the filters. I knew we had a problem when I couldn’t find it on my own. 😩😩😩😩😩😩
Thanks buddy, I am trying to find a bad smell when I turn my heat on bring air from out side smells like a mouse nest but I can’t find it yet when I turn my heat to only use the air in the cabin you know the recirculate button I don’t get any bad smell? What do you think I will check my cabin filter! Thanks !😇🇺🇸🤠🚨
Everything in the article is informative, HOWEVER the first step indicates to move the white clips in towards the center and it was difficult for me. Next when you remove the retractable clip on the side you will never be able to retrieve it unless you remove the dash side panel. I had a difficult time lining up the white tabs described in step 1 to remount the door. Needless to say I broke one of them and needed to order another one. Unless you drive in dusty conditions don’t bother changing this filter. I have 60,000 miles on my 2017 Explorer driving interstate highways and around town and the old filter was still in decent shape. Now, I’m not even thinking of changing my 2016 F150 with 30,000 miles.
