How To Remove A Gel Stain Off An Outside Door?

To restain a wood front door with gel stain, start by cleaning and sanding the door to remove any old finish or imperfections. Apply the gel stain in even strokes, covering the entire surface of the door. Remove any excess stain and repeat the process if desired. This DIY technique is perfect for those looking to make their home beautiful on a budget without sanding.

To get a showcase quality finish on an exterior fiberglass gel stain door, follow these steps:

  1. Clean the door with a damp rag and allow it to dry.
  2. Remove door hardware and apply painter’s tape where needed (optional). Make your strokes even and try to barely overlap them as you apply the stain.
  3. Use 120 Grit sand paper to give the door a quick sand.
  4. Spray the door with simply green and use a scour pad and water scrub the door.
  5. Apply the stain using a combination of foam brushes and standard paint brushes (personal preference).
  6. Apply the top coat once the stain is completely dry. Because Exterior 450 top coat is water-based and General Finishes’ Gel Stain is oil-based, it can also be used to stain the doorjamb, door frame, and mullions.

In summary, gel stain is a quick and easy way to refresh a faded, weathered front door without sanding or stripping the wood. This DIY project offers a professional-looking makeover without the need for sanding or stripping the wood.

  • So I just messed up my brand new door, the color of the gel stain is way too dark and I didn’t do a very good job applying it. I brushed it on and it is very uneven? Should I have rolled it on instead? Also is there a way to start over by sanding and going with a lighter color new gel stain, or can you even go lighter after it’s already dark?

  • my fiberglass door has a surface finish that is peeling unevenly. I stained it a few years ago when it was fading and now the door is peeling. What can I do to remove the top peeling layer but leave the original door stain behind. I do plan to gel stain it after the peeling top layer is removed. Is there a chemical that I can use or am I stuck with sanding the door. I don’t think sanding the door alone will remove all the peeling surface and I think it will leave an uneven surface that won’t look good if I apply a stain to it. thanks for your help. .
