This guide provides five easy-to-follow steps to fix a sagging door. The first step is to identify the problem area, which can be caused by constant slamming or expansion and contraction of wood. The guide then outlines five methods to address this issue and restore the door to its former glory.
One effective way to fix a sagging door is to replace one of the top-hinge screws with a 3-inch long screw. Swing the door ajar a bit, push it back into position, and use a hand drill to tighten the screws on the door hinge. Tighten loose hinges, remove hinge spacers, add new hinge screws, and remove excess paint or stain.
To fix a sagging door, open the door to 90 degrees, place a shim under the outside corner, and use a drill or screwdriver to tighten the screws. If there is misalignment, loosen the jamb side of the leaf, shim, and tighten the leaf to get both halves to line up.
A quick fix is to install a diagonal cable/turnbuckle assembly from the swinging lower corner. Remove the affected hinge and trace the hinge on a thin sheet of wood, playing cards, or cardboard. This will help you restore the door to its former glory and prevent it from sagging.
