How To Properly Decorate Using Eclectic Pieces?

Eclectic style interior design is a blend of bold color, curated collections, and a mix of furniture and decor from various styles and eras. This style is known for its ability to push the envelope and be fearless in the face of interior decor norms. To create a successful eclectic interior, designers should focus on a unifying color palette, provide a focal point, mix and match patterns, prints, and textures, and include negative space.

To create an eclectic look, focus on one standout piece per room as an anchor for your eclectic style, then build around it with complementary items. Simple painted walls will create a solid foundation to bring in eclectic decor and add interest elsewhere. Adding vibrant accessories to a plain backdrop is far from impossible.

Creating an eclectic space requires a fine balance between several elements, starting with a neutral base that represents different eras. Add pops of color, embrace patterns, decorate with inherited and collected items, infuse your personality into the scheme, focus on the walls, and use the main decor as a focal point.

Incorporating a few quirky touches and incorporating a neutral wall color can set a room up for success. By following these tips, you can create a visually interesting home that is inherently you and reflects your personal taste and style.

What materials are used in eclectic style?

Eclectic interior design is a style that celebrates individuality, creativity, and the harmonious fusion of diverse elements. This style allows for a bold mix of contrasting textures, patterns, colors, and furnishings, resulting in visually striking and deeply personal spaces. The key elements of eclectic interior design include the unrestrained fusion of styles, which involves seamlessly blending various design styles from different eras and regions.

This creates a captivating ambiance that sparks curiosity and captivates the senses. Traditional, modern, industrial, bohemian, and vintage styles can coexist harmoniously in an eclectic space, bridging the gap between the past and the present. Mastering this fusion requires balance and cohesion, and integrating elements that share common traits, such as complementary colors or similar shapes, can establish a sense of unity amid the diversity. By embracing the extraordinary essence of eclectic design, commercial interior designers can create a living space that truly reflects the unique personality of the client.

How to make eclectic decor work?

Ethnic décor is about contrasting colors, shapes, materials, and styles, not just choosing unique pieces. Experiment with different periods and styles to create interesting spaces. Invest in statement lighting pieces like chandeliers, floor lamps, or unique pendant lights to create a focal point and set the tone of the space. Collecting pieces with special meaning over time is essential for creating an eclectic style, as we fall in love with certain objects as old friends.

Even if a piece may not fit within the aesthetics of your home, try to find a way to make it work within your design story. Investing in statement lighting pieces can create a focal point and set the tone of the space.

How do I decide my decorating style?

Investing and collecting over time can help you find your design style. Instead of decorating your space in a day, let it evolve over time. Personal value pieces can move with you throughout your growth, while trendy pieces can quickly fade out of style. Avoid fast furniture and trend-focused aesthetics, as they can quickly become outdated. Remember, your design style should evolve with you as you grow.

How can I get better at decorating?

To create a unique and personal room, it’s essential to experiment with different furniture arrangements and accessory placements. Live with the arrangement for a few days before rearranging if needed. Allow your decor to evolve over time, creating a room with personality and depth. As you travel or visit new stores, you’ll find unique pieces and decorating ideas to implement. Over time, you’ll become more in tune with your preferences and how to create a room you love. Grouping items in threes or odd numbers is more visually appealing, and follow the rule of 3 when it comes to color, texture, pattern, and furniture and decor placement.

What makes a person eclectic?

Eclectic is a term derived from the Greek adjective eklektikos, meaning “picking out” or “selecting what appears to be best”, and the verb eklegein, meaning “to select”. It was initially used to describe ancient philosophers who chose doctrines from various schools of thought. The term has since expanded to encompass other selective natures and elements drawn from different sources. For example, a museum with an eclectic collection may showcase pieces from various styles and periods, as well as a person with eclectic tastes if they enjoy a broad range of genres such as film, music, and literature.

In the past, fishers carried an eclectic array of tools, while the polo crowd was eclectic and dangerously narcissistic and treachery. In the present, people enjoy big wheels of country bread and eclectic selections of pâtés, hams, cheeses, honey, and homemade cookies and sweets. The term “eclectic” has evolved over time to encompass a wide range of perspectives and experiences.

How to pull off an eclectic decorating style?

Ethnic décor offers the freedom to mix and match different styles, but it can be challenging to achieve a cohesive look. To avoid creating an overdose of stimulation, limit yourself to two or three interior design styles and ensure each style is evenly distributed throughout for balance. Avoid allowing one style to dominate the space, as this could make certain items appear out of place.

A deliberate color palette is essential for bringing an air of cohesion to your space. Mix furniture styles from a range of design periods, play with proportions, and layer textures. The ultimate goal is to create a space that reflects your personality and the essence of your business.

When selecting accessories, be purposeful and avoid forcing an abundance of unique items. Instead, opt for a single statement piece that demands attention for a tasteful amount of style. For example, a large mirror with a funky frame, a boldly patterned armchair, or a crazy lighting fixture can add just the right amount of oomph without being over the top.

How to do eclectic right?

Neutrals are a great base for a room, but adding pops of color can give it an eclectic flavor. This can be achieved through accessories, accent walls, floor, or plants. Keeping the main color in mind helps tie all rooms together. Plants are a key element in home decor, and they can be incorporated into the living space by choosing the plant and the pot. Wooden furniture, paintings, sculptures, or hanging a large branch on the wall can also add to the natural feel.

Patterns are fun to design with and can be placed anywhere in the space. They can be used as mosaic tiles for a backsplash, painted on walls, or used in blankets, plant pots, or rugs. Textures, such as woven baskets or quilted blankets, can also be used as patterns. The latest patterns from Cuba and other Latin regions can be a great addition to any space. By incorporating these elements, you can create a cohesive and visually appealing space.

What are the colors of eclectic?

An eclectic design style is defined by a diverse color palette, encompassing a range of hues from red to green, yellow, turquoise, ochre, and grey. There are no specific rules governing the selection of colors or materials. Deriving from the Greek term “eklektos,” meaning “select the best,” this style presents a synthesis of influences from diverse historical and cultural contexts, enabling the formation of a distinctive and individualized style.

What is eclectic dress code?

An eclectic outfit is a collection of various pieces that don’t have to go together in any way, shape, or form. This freedom of expression and style is often ridiculed and looked down upon, but Carrie Bradshaw’s closet exemplifies eclectic fashion. The fear of making a mistake often stops people from taking chances in life and fashion. To make the fashion risk easier, there are three steps to create an eclectic outfit:

  1. Start slowly by starting with a theme of contrast, which is about mixing multiple fabrics, colors, patterns, and prints. Mixing multiple fabrics, colors, patterns, and prints is all about opposites. The easiest way to start is by making each piece work with one another, not every item should go together, but they can work in pairs. To make it all come together, throw in a completely random accessory. This approach allows for a more relaxed and adventurous approach to fashion.

What is the difference between eclectic and bohemian decor?

Ethnic style, which may be described as a blend of artsy and bohemian décor, places emphasis on principles such as proportion, scale, balance, and rhythm. These principles are employed with a view to creating harmony and grounding in a space. In contrast to this, the bohemian style often disregards such rules.

  • As someone who loves to thrift homeward, my style is definitely leaning this way from a mostly mid century base. Someone said you should have one antique in every room and I’m starting to incorporate that into my home now starting with an ornate carved wooden chest that’s been in my family, for generations. I loved the examples you gave because usually this “maximalist” style can hurt my brain, but these examples were clearly well thought out when designed, instead of more is more.

  • Excellent article; just excellent. I’ve never heard it broken down like that. That was very much appreciated and helpful. Also, you have some of the most amazing images I’ve seen. I actually plan on going back through the article and pausing on my favorites. A couple of them even looked like my great room! 😃 Thank you.

  • I’m learning so much from your articles. I always thought I hated eclectic style because most of the rooms that were described as eclectic were that chaotic mess you talked about. I found by looking at the excellent rooms you showed us here that my style is actually eclectic and I never knew it. Am happy to learn that I did a pretty good job of putting things together! I so appreciate the large number of sample rooms you show us and always have to watch several times to take it all in. Thank you!

  • Hi, I just found your website and I think is very interesting, I love eclectic but my favorite style is Old World, can you do a article about this style? New subscriber here 🙋🏽‍♀️ I hope you can see my home and give me your professional opinion 😊 I definitely want to paint some walls in a bronze or mustard color 😇

  • I just found you on you tube! I love love love my truly eclectic style. It is my sanctuary and place of peace comfort and most importantly love. I am an Artist and a Pro Makeup Artist for over 4 decades. My home reflects my love of Color Art Fashion and my love of Vintage. When you said something about who cares what designers or others think it’s your home and you live in it…that statement set me free!! Your words on this article set me free to color my world…my own! Thank you. ☆♡☆♡☆♡☆

  • Totally agree. Your home should be as you yourself like it to be. Have always found that good old thing called money to be the most difficult factor to solve when there are items you see you would just love to have but cannot possibly afford. Lovely to see colour in rooms as apposed to the soul less white minimalist popular style these days plus not at all realistic with 3 little children charging around followed by the dog but having said that thought a lot of your portrayed rooms very OTT and would present the same actual family problems. One cannot ‘live’ in a show house. Hey ho, I’m just jealous! Some excellent points in your very quickly spoken article tho. Thank you.

  • Eclectic- deriving ideas, style, or taste from a broad and diverse range of sources… Please don’t tell anyone what is & isn’t Eclectic.. There’s no amount of experience or Skill in Design that Deems someone the Authority to what is Correct or Not when it comes to Decorating. Have Fun with your home & do as little or as much to your liking. Besides the Silly and Useless Critiquing of Style, the article had some Inspiring Ideas. The only advice that can be efficient & useful is being honest with your home in regards to Size, Space, & Potential. You have to start from Scratch if you want Uber minimal clean lines and Design. So, like most people, there’s many imperfections in your home & you have to work with what you have. You will indeed have to hide your eye sores and draw attention to your best Areas. Consider your home a Representation of yourself. Each style or Segment of your home You display should be a talking point or Authentic to You. Lastly, if it bring you Joy and Energy & Tells your Rich Story.. Your on the Right Path.

  • That’s is an awesome article….it is indeed a complete guideline for an eclectic style…as I also have an eclectic style in my interior so it became my guide book to improve my style…I really enjoyed it thoroughly and watched it twice and stopped it again and again to see those wonderful images ….thank you so much for sharing…you are amazing 😍😍😍😘😘😘🤗🤗🤗

  • When I eventually get a house I would like to decorate it with lots of style and culture. Would it be a good idea to decorate each room with its own style or should the whole house have a cohesive eclectic style to it? For instance for the media/game room in thinking using all IKEA furnitures and Nordic influence. For the formal living room it would be French. What do you think? Thank you.

  • I just bought an Everglades green velvet tufted couch amp a rug with an abstract pattern of Matt yellow, white, green, and blue. My walls are white and I am trying to keep to the colors of green yellow black and white but am stumped when it comes to end tables and coffee tables. Can I get all different styles and mix woods with metals or marble and if that would work how do I know what color of woods (light or dark) would marry the space not make it seem dark and small, help lol any suggest would be much appreciated
