How To Make A Town Outside Using The Skyrim Creation Kit?

This tutorial demonstrates the basic method to create a new exterior cell or exterior world in Skyrim. To create a town, select a world that shows the worldspace in that area and use the Skyrim Creation Kit to generate world LOD textures through a background process. The tutorial series focuses on the basics of the landscaping tool for worldspaces and how to use both the physical land editing features and the texture brush.

A world space is an entire world with its own landscape, sky, and weather. In Skyrim, most of the exterior is in the Tamriel worldspace. To implement a new location into Skyrim, click on the drop-down menu and select the worldspace Tamriel to load Skyrim’s exterior cells in the Cell View Window.

The Creation Kit is free for anyone with a PC copy of Skyrim Special Edition or Skyrim Legendary Edition and a Steam account. To build a house outside Solitude’s walls, build in the Tamriel worldspace at the coordinates outside the city. To access the tool for editing exteriors, make sure your Render Window is active and hit the ‘h’ button.

In summary, this tutorial demonstrates the basics of creating a new exterior cell or exterior world in Skyrim, focusing on the creation process from end-to-end.

  • try resetting the LOD. When building exteriors be very carefull, press B to toggle borders, when placing stuff it is very easy to load Cell 1 but accidentally move into Cell 2. (in the cell view you will notice the loaded cell is highlighted in grey) load up a cell for example and zoom out and rotate, you can easily pass between borders and the cell will change. If you want to place an item in Cell A but place it over the border it can cause the item not to show.

  • likewise if you load up cell B and accidentally start editing things in Cell A it can cause them to go invisible. To avoid this if you realise you need to start editing things in Cell B just load up cell B and you can place away, you just need to make sure you load the cell you want to work on rather than just drifting in between them. hope this helps.

  • Make sure you put it in the cell you’re trying to teleport to. Like if you wanted it in (Town01) but you accidentally put it a tiny bit over the cell border, and it’s in (Wilderness) make sure it’s in the right cell. Also, don’t type in the NAME of the cell. type in the CODE of the cell, if you get what I mean. If you coded the cell MyTown01, but named it ‘Trefinity’s Town’, type in ‘coc MyTown01’, not ‘coc Trefinity’s Town’
