How To Use Sketchup To Create Interior Elevations?

This video teaches how to create elevation views from SketchUp models and export them into Layout for construction documents. It covers topics such as creating an interior elevation plan, using the Section tool, Views icon, and Parallel Projection setting. A rendered elevation is a useful communication tool, especially when time is limited. It allows for quick snapshots of the design, illustrating color palette, product selection, and furniture arrangement.

To create interior elevations, use only the Pan and Zoom tools to center and scale the elevation. You can start with Parallel Projection and not have to do step 3. To create scenes for use in LayOut, turn off Section Fill in the style. Create each room as a component and create 4 Section Planes inside each component.

An architect is trying to use the parallel projection method instead of section planes to create interior elevations on an entire house. To effectively use the Interior Elevations tool, you need to be in a “plan scene” where a section plane is active. A tool or plugin could be used to place a camera in the center of a room and create 4 scenes that elevate the room.

  • Hey Justin, Sketch up seems like an amazing tool. My company is asking me to look into whether we should upgrade to it. I’ve seen a lot of articles about it but it seems to be missing one thing we would need. Automatic 2d elevations of kitchen/laundry and bathroom walls. To give you some context we do kitchen/bathroom and other remodeling. Cabinetry and countertops. Therefore we require 2d elevations to show our installers. Any help or clarification would be much appreciated.

  • You’re amazing Justin, I love the detail you go over and you are a great instructor!! Thank you so much for your help. Building a custom house build here in B.C. I am a builder but I also create and produce powerful visuals using sketchup and enscape 3d for my customers so that they don’t have to guess about what they are getting, your articles have largely helped me with my progress. Thank you!!
