How To Join The Outside Of A Bib?

This video demonstrates how to replace a hose bibb/spigot on the exterior of a house, using bread as a tool to plug leaking water after the main shut-off valve is closed. The process is not difficult and can be done using solder from the opposite side of the fitting. Two types of attachments are covered: screw on and soldered on (also known as “sweat”).

In this straightforward guide, Greg demonstrates how to remove and replace a hose bib on the outside of a building. He covers two types of attachments: screw on and soldered on (also known as “sweat”). This straightforward guide provides homeowners with all the essentials to execute hose bib replacement efficiently.

Replacing an outdoor faucet, also known as an outdoor spigot or hose bib, is a DIY project that can save time and money while ensuring your outdoor water supply is in perfect working condition. Soldering copper pipe and fittings is essential and just the beginning of this fix.

Additionally, adding a ball valve allows the whole house not to need to be turned off and drained to the lowest point to solder again. To complete the process, turn off water, drain line, unsolder it, clean and prep the pipe, and solder on a new one the same way.

For the solder-on installation, Greg uses a Mapp gas torch.

  • i repiped my house and ran 400 feet of copper through the attic and have a lot of practice sweating over 160 joints. i learned from a master plumber to keep water away, take white bread and stuff it in the pipe to keep the joint dry. in your case i would tske a reciprocating saw and cut the front part of the spigot off to gain access to use the bread trick. it is faster than vacuuming out the water. good article though

  • One major issue with this vid and that is it’s rarely that easy to take the spigot off of that copper pipe. In fact it’s usually HELL! Can you imagine a spigot being on a copper tube for 10, 20, 30 plus years. You bet – it’s practically fused together and many times almost impossible. This vid seems like the best case scenario and it’s not realistic. Taking that spigot off, if it’s been on there a long time, is HELL to get off. Overall a very good instructional article,

  • you must be living hot area, my main shot off Valve would never able to survie if as left ouside Garage wall even inside Garage I keep with heat strip all winter Long . Instead of insisting to keep flame low and under pipe I think made the job much longer then spose to be I would move Falme all over the pipe not just holding uner and hoping top will eventually heated up to .

  • I do a lot of my own repairs at home. Widowed and no kids to help, so I get a lot of jobs to do that I’ve never done before. Thank you for this article. I have a ‘quarter turn’ type outdoor faucet. Today it was leaking so badly I could fill an outdoor rain barrel in about an hour and a half! That’s a bad leak! I was hoping to find information on how to replace my type of faucet, and only saw older type faucet articles, until I found yours! Yeah!!! I’ll be working on my faucet in the morning, and I won’t need to do any soldering, but only replace the quarter turn portion on mine. Since I had never done this before, I wanted to be sure I found a article that gave me all the information I needed to do it right. Thanks so much! I subscribed as I have to do repairs on all sorts of things from time to time, and it helps to know where to go to find the information. I may even change out my other faucets as the house is 35 years old and I imagine the faucets could use some attention after all this time. One question — Do you have articles on determining if a faucet is leaking behind a wall? I am not sure if I have an issue, only that the water sounds really strong in my kitchen when I turn the faucet on outside. NO signs of water, but I get concerned that there may be a leak and I can’t see it. I’d love to see a article on determine the location of a leak of this kind. Thanks again!!😌

  • That’s great, thanks! I will take out the old school rubber plunge and replace it with the ball joint 1/4 turn. Never thought about it but the male adapter thread for future replacements if needed. Great shout out on the dripping faucet, that is what brought me here! Lol 1. I have used white bread (no crust) to hold back water. Is this method a good or bad one? Keep in mind I do not show an entire slice up there, just a bit so it can dissolve.
