I needed a new door handle for the shop. Figured I’d make a video. Note: please watch the whole video before installing yours.
Very good article. The one I installed today did not come out of the package as shown. My screws were in a sealed plastic bag. The style of knob I used seems shorter than the demo one. A locksmith installed the original. I noticed one screw was somewhat angled . The heads were worn. The new screws I hand placed, but one was hard to turn because it is too close to the round knob. I also noticed it was going in at an angle and I wore down the top. The driver kept rubbing the knob. I removed it so I can get a new screw and try again. The set is secure and functions well with one screw, but it was made for 2. This knob took up a lot of my time, moreso than any other knob I have installed. I should probably return the unit and try another style. Thanks for this article.
Thanks for the article. Unfortunately you skipped over the one piece of info I needed. I installed a knob and the latch will not spring back out when I tighten everything. You described the exact problem and said “if that happens..” and then you did not provide the solution. I would appreciate it if you could advise on how to remedy that issue.
Wow! I bought this EXACT Smartkey Kwikset lockset. I ALWAYS read the directions and prep before hand. But I just wasted 30 minutes and embarrassed the heck out of myself in front of the whole family. The directions were nonsensical- ”remove plates” (NO!), and included a ”drive in collar” that was pointless (but if used and left in place will cause alignment problems). Meanwhile, the AC is going out and mosquitoes are coming in! I felt like the whole family was perusal my defeat. I threw the blasted directions in the trash and watched your article from beginning to end. Then I did the job in about 8-10 minutes (demo. to family and cleanup included). Good heavens! It’s a nice, solid lockset, and I get that Kwikset ”made it simple” by designing it so that the through bolts can be left in place- but without your article, I’d have blown a gasket! Sending you endless thanks and gratitude for saving my pride. Liked and subbed!
“Right quick…” it was like having my Dad with me to put my mind at ease. Something about seeing that last step that made the directions “click” (avoid the temptation to unscrew the long screws as they are sold/packaged in-place right where they need to be)… Bought the Kwikset model for that DIY rekeying feature & it was a snap, too. Got my condo’s balcony storage room keyed to my front door, one key for both doors. And no locksmith fees!! 🎉 Thanks Wayne (& Izzy). 💪🔑😊
Great article! Very helpful. I’m about to install my second one today. When installing the first one, I had trouble with those long screws. My own fault! I removed those screws, even though the instructions clearly said NOT to remove them! I couldn’t figure out the concept from their instructions. Thankfully, I did manage to get the thing installed, but with a lot of frustration! Now that I SEE how this mechanism (ingenious!) works, it makes sense and I feel confident that the door knob installation today will be a piece of cake! Thanks!!!
Hi Wayne, I just bought a kwikset door knob. The latch part has two very little nubs on the top and bottom of the latch about 1″ from the plunger – just as yours has in the article. Those nubs prevent me from putting the plunger all of the way in. Should I just bank it in with a hammer? Thank you in advance! )
I was looking for a article that described how these pre-inserted screws work when you twist on the other knob that goes on to them. I Followed the directions very closely but the knob still disengages at times when you turn the knob. I don’t like this design. I’d rather have screws that you could screw in and tighten rather than having to turn the knob to make them catch and then screw them in. I noticed that the heads of the screws are kind of small and that is easy for the door knob to slide off of them. Have you experienced the same thing or am I doing it wrong?
Thank you a thousand times. Paid someone to change my door years ago and the lock was always loose. It finally fell off about two weeks ago. I tried several times to put it on with no avail. Looked a several articles and something was missing. Saw your article about half an hour ago and presto its on. The other articles did not mention the twisting to get the screws to properly align. Thank you once again. God bless you. Peace.
Thank you, Wayne! I have installed many quickset knobs and have thrown the directions away. I dealt with my garage knob falling off almost every time I went in and out. This article helped me to lock the screws and realize that I needed to tighten them a bit to keep the knob on. You have saved me many future moments of frustration as my knob is now secure thanks to your article.
You saved me four hours of just trying to put it on correctly, i followed your instructions close and it took about 10 Minutes total!! now i got two locks on my front door, i feel much safer know, i was worried i might have to hire a locksmith but it was easy. I can see many ways you could goof it up though so thats why this article is great. Thanks
Thank you so much!!! Your article saved me so much stress. I showed Home Depot worker your article and we could only find one in their store that had the screws preput and able to be pushed thru the other side without removing those screws. Genius idea! The worker at the store had not seen this before and he also wanted one but of course no more. Interesting enough is Kwik Set must be doing away with this “easy install ” as we found other ones that were packed in the same box and had the same skew number but when we took those ones out of their boxes they did not have the inner door knob that has the twisted “easy mechanism” where it springs back after easily pushing thru. Would you happen to know what the trick will be for me to find more of these that are just like this set up in your article? Thank you again. I subscribed to your website so I can check out some of your other articles.
Thank you, the instructions were non-existant, none in the box. From YT I learned how to put in a door knob, reset my thermostat for my furnace, sharpen a lawn mower blade and learn how to remove it do so. There is a wealth of information on here for someone who is alone and nowhere to go for help. God bless you sir.
If you already had a quick set walk to that door you could have repeated because kwikset has the new rekey locks and it is super easy to keep the same keys throughout the house and garage and rekey yourself which takes about 1 minute or less. After 37 years, and the kwikset comes with a lifetime warranty but I figured that for 30 bucks I now have a new entry lock and a deadbolt which I’m installing today and I used your article too refresh my memory before taking everything apart. I will say that your article is one of the best on YouTube. Thank you for sharing it with us and also I learned a little bit about the parts that allow for the adjustments without having to read the two very long read only my magnifying glass guides or instruction papers.
good article. was trying to replace a broken knob and when i installed the replacement the latch was barely sticking out. this article showed me the issue. I had the outer knob installed at a weird angle which caused a lot of issues. thanks. an unterly dumb issue but its nice to see a “this is how it should look” example
RIGHT ON JO DADDY! This is a REALLY COOL thing that you do by showing folks like me just how to do something. I haven’t replaced a door knob in some time, it’s cold and dark out here in Maryland right now so I dont wanna be outside for too long. So you helped me as N if I had JUST replaced one myself JUST NOW! So, with that knowledge and visual in my mind now, it wont take as long for me to replace because I hope I wont make mistakes as I certainly would have had I not just watched your article! Thanks Jo Daddy! Larry in Maryland
This article was exactly what I needed! My Kwikset door knob kit has been sitting on a table in my house waiting for my husband to find time to install it. A month later I was about to call a handyman to do it but decided to look into how difficult the job might be when your article popped up. I installed everything in less than ten minutes after perusal your article! Thank you so much!
Ty for this article, actually working on this right now and I needed a article to watch (I prefer to watch how it’s done, makes more sense to me for some reason 😆) so thank you! I’d love to see a deadbolt one also, I’ll have to go buy that separately. Is it better to buy one that has keyholes on both sides or with only the exterior keyhole? I hope you see this since this article is so old. Thanks again! 🙂
I am in my seventies and I have a terrible time lining up the final screws to complete installation. Here is a little trick I discovered. Before I install the inside lock part, I put two farmer’s matches in the holes just enough to hold the match. They fit perfectly. Then I put the lock part on and tape it to the door with a painter’s tape (wide). Your holes are lined up. Pull one match stick and insert the screw. Pull the other match and complete installing the last screw. ‘WORKS FOR ME’
Great article but I have a tip for you. For removing/installing the Knobs on the door. The interior knob has groves or slots for the screws that hold the 2 knobs together (at least on KwikSet ). So to remove the interior knob loosen the screws and turn the interior knob counter clockwise and the screws will disengage from the knob and you can remove it. They come out the slots. To install, put the outer knob thru the striker assembly, install the screws part of the way in, slide the interior knob on to the center shaft then slightly turn it counter clockwise, once the screws hit the back of the intrior knob, turn it clockwise to engage the head of the screws into the slots of the interior knob…tighten until snug. This save you the hassle of trying to screw the screws in the whole way with your screwdriver angled.
Great, detailed article. I’ve got Kwikset locks too, and they are absolute crap. The finish wears off in no time and the mechanism fails. I’ve replaced mine 3 times over 20 years using the Kwikset warranty. Service is pretty bad, too. For anyone perusal who hasn’t bought yet, go with Schlage or another good brand.
Thank you so much, Jo Daddy! I’m a single mom that got married out of high school and just went through a divorce after 20 years. I embarrassed to say it, but I honestly have no clue how to do even the most simple handyman tasks around the house. Thanks to you and your article I was able to change my door handle! I subscribed to your website, which makes another first for me, and I look forward to more helpful articles. I’m sure I’m not alone so I just want you to know how much those of us who’ve never had to do anything like this before truly appreciate your help! 🙂
This article was well worth the time spent perusal, as I have 12 of these to do, and the first one had some issues, will now redo that. Thank you so much for explaining not only the how but the why. The little paper instructions that come with the handles did not put the breadcrumbs close enough together for me. You have a new subscriber…
Longer screws on a knob will have a negligible effect on security. An entry knob itself is inadequate for protecting a door. A deadbolt with long screws in the strike plate would be much more effective. Also, no mention was made of correct key way orientation. The key should always enter the key way teeth or bitting facing up.
The one issue I was looking to solve…… nope. On the latch assembly, to use on a non-chiseled door, those plates have to come off. The chrome front one separated easily with a screwdriver. The back plate, however….. it doesn’t come off. It can’t. There is no provision to remove it. Unlike the flat plate shown here, this one is part of a “tube” that slides over the latch assembly. It has – for no reason I can think of – a groove cut into it, guiding it by a tab cast into the latch assembly at an angle, so when you turn it, it slides in or out on the assembly. This lock is supposed to accommodate either a chiseled or unchisled door, and it does supply a snap-on trim piece to use when you remove the plates. Which you can’t. Goddamnit. Just can’t buy something that just works….. there always has to be a problem. Now I have to put the old lock back on, take this piece of garbage back, buy another one…… again: goddamnit.
One more Thanks coming your way! My instructions did not explain what the collar for the latch was for or any of the options sinarios . I have the same lock as you do in the article but you must have paid for the one with good instructions! 😉🤣 anyways I got the answer needed to proceed. I look forward to perusal more of your website! (I will surely need it while procrastinating the next project!🙄 hey maybe do a article on that! Titled “How to correctly light a fire under your….” something like that!) ✌
At 12 min 45 seconds he has no trouble getting the bolts to catch. The hole is too big and the bolt falls out of place. Returned the qwikset for a defiant and was able to line up the bolts by turning the knob all the way clockwise and got perfect alinement. Qwickset 800 number was useless and had a heavy accent. They told me the door was too thin which wasn’t true per specs on the box. I just returned it for a defiant which was cheaper and easier to install.
Oh, my gosh! Buy a bottle of Asesome at Dollar General and clean the black crud from your door. Have you any idea how many germs are on that door. Who has touched it? Where have their hands been? In these days of COVID, one cannot be too careful. The build up of dirt and grease shows exactly where people touch the door to close it and the other side of the door is the same.
Well you helped me figure out how to separate those two little plates that were stuck together by using a screwdriver, but I don’t know why you demonstrated how to put a metal tube onto the thingymagig, the one that locks in to the two little divits, then take it completely off again, (which took me about 15-20 minutes becuz as soon as I pulled one side out, the other side slipped back into place!) and never mention it again. At any rate I was able to put in a door knob with a lock. Thanks!
comment by another commenter made sense. He took some small match sticks and put them in the receptors for the long screws. Then when he slided the back side of the door knob on in he made sure the holes went over match sticks for a perfect alinement. Then Just pull one of the sticks out and your in perfect alinement.
My lock won’t retract, but the door is in closed position. So I can’t get to the other side. Only working from the inside. Interior garage door. How can you remove a lock without opening a door? Have both the dead lock and button push handles off. Can’t seem to retract the bolt.. Grrrr lol. About ready to give up and call the locksmith
OK Jo Daddy Oh….. Just finished installing the Kwikset door handle…. probably took me about 30 minutes was having trouble getting into place without being inches from the door. Finally everything fell into place, doorknob / lock is working and onto the next project! Thank you very much….. I think it would have been much more difficult without your tips for some of the mechanisms releases. 11/14/23
12:35 I cannot do this for the life of me. The way the crescent slot has to line up in order to mate with its male counterpart is completely preventing me from aligning the screw holes. No matter how I twist the base of the interior handle after getting it in the slot, I cannot get the holes to align 🤔
Is the small bolt of the latch also supposed to slide into the strike plate opening. It’s difficult to see if it does or not and based on another article that I watched I was under the impression that it’s not supposed to. Can you please address this detail and how one might go about making an adjustment if necessary? Thank you!
My house is older and 1 door mechanism actually broke off with the piece stuck in the door frame. Another door knob was agiving me grief to so it was time to replace them. I watched a how to article on youtube but the 1st guy said to just throw the collar out. My door plate area was not recessed so the 1st installation did not work. I was aggravated and at a loss, so I manually chewed up the door (with hammer & screwdriver) to make the recess for the door plate. What an ordeal and mess. Then I watched your youtube clip and found your comment about adding the collar and hammering in with a block of wood and it was a God send. It saved me so much time, aggrevation, and mess on the second door knob replacement. Note to anyone reading this, the block of wood is necessary when collar is needed and used. It cushions protects mechanism, plate and door and ensures it is hammered in straight. Worked great! I can’t thank you enough!
I’m a 67 yr old widow with older house. 2 door problems. Bathroom door knob mechanism stuck and broke in door frame. Yes, literally broke! Another knob keeps falling off so time to replace both. Watched 1st youtube article and guy said to simply throw out collar. Bathroom door frame not recessed so wound up chewing up the wood in the door (with screwdriver & hammer) to create the recess. What an aggrevating, time consuming ordeal and mess. Then watched your article and followed your tip about installing the collar into mechanism and hammering with block of wood. Wish I watched your clip the first time. Note to anyone reading this, the block of wood is necessary as it protects and cushions the mechanism and door and ensure it hammers in straight and flush with door. Worked like a charm on the second door. Thank you so much. Your tip was a God send!!
Thank you so much for this instructional article on how to install a doorknob! Like someone else stated, my new one had also been sitting on my kitchen table until I found your article! After mulling over the directions and still not feeling clear, you simplified, explained, and modeled the installation! I’m looking forward to more of your articles to help me through the projects around the home! My first doorknob was installed at 63, with your help! 🙌
I donno where I * ucked up but I did ! This is on the new entery key or key enter, door knob & lock, YK. that little turn button u had a problem with ? On my new one it doesn’t let me lock it, I turn it to the right forever, I turn I to the left and it comes to a stop and won’t let me turn no more, so it lets me lock it with the key from the inside, (me standing inside with the Damn door open) but that’s not right, I have to play around with the button to get too! WTH Do u have a fix for this ?! Funny but not Funny … Thanks, I really need a Fix It Guy….
i had a door knob put when a guy was putting in my door, well for some reason it came loose, i started checking it out, then i said i better check it out first a i found this article, and after a few minutes i seen my problem, got the screw driver out and got it done, i like the way he did it, just show us how it done, don’t go read the instruction, Thank you Jo Daddy, peace
