Titan Kwikset Interior Door Knob Unlocking Instructions?

To rekey a Kwikset Titan lock knob, ensure the User Code is correct and the Kwikset button is pushed after entering the User Code. If the door still won’t unlock, use a key to unlock it. A rubber-band on a screwdriver can be used to reset the lock if the current key is not present.

To rekey a SmartKey lock, all you need is your old key and the SmartKey that came with it. To rekey a pin and tumbler knob, you’ll need a Kwikset Re-Keying Kit and a new key. If there is a latch, use a rubber-band on a screwdriver.

To remove a Kwikset lock from a door, start by unscrewing the screws on the interior side of the lock. Once the screws are removed, the lock should easily come off the door. If there is a latch, use a Kwikset Re-Keying Kit and a new key.

Kwikset door handle removal is the reverse of installation, and it may help you get started if you check the installation. To re-key a Kwikset Key-In-Knob Lockset, start by removing the lockset from the door or packaging, separate and set aside the interior half of the lockset, and hold the lock so that the side with the keyway is facing. Now that the door is open, try to trigger the latch turning the knob and simulate opening or closing the door. If the door does not open completely, try shimming the latch to allow it to open.

A very narrow flat bladed screwdriver will also work. With a Kwikset, you will have to turn the mechanism inside the lock, not pushing it. Kwikset is a secure door lock industry leader and innovator in home safety with keyless entry and re-keying technology for residential and commercial doors.

  • Thank you so much for this article. I fought with my garage door security lock until this article. The exterior door handle had a tab that I battled and finally got the handle off, but no way to release the inner handle. Your article helped me get that inner handle off. All of this just to tighten the damn screws!😂 The part that really upset me was that I never had to take off that exterior handle. 🙄🔫Thanks so much.

  • How do you install the ones that have the screws that you’re not supposed to take out before installation?? Lol I’m having a hell of a time with it. Instructions say to push up on the knob while tightening the screws and when I try I can’t get the dank screwdriver at the correct angle to tighten them. Mines a smart key one. Thanks! Nice articles

  • How do you possibly get the tiny screwdriver to lift the cover if the faceplate is flush to the door? It super easy if the entire mechanism is in your hand. I’m working on a door with no wiggle room to the side. I can FEEL a hole up against the door jam, ther only room tbere would may accomodate an allen wrench. I’d like to get ahold of the guy who installed these

  • Greetings from south Louisiana. Thank you very much for your help here. As soon as you showed the tab with the arrow, it all “clicked” and I was able to get my door repaired. I’m not certain where you are located otherwise I would put you on my contacts for future service. Nonetheless, wish you success and safe peaceful days. Thank you !

  • Just an FYI: If you are trying to install a new Kwikset knob, and don’t see the latch beneath the rose, return it! I purchased a Polo privacy knob from Walmart, and spent hours researching how to remove the knob so I could remove the rose for installation. No screws on the knob, no indent, no slot and no catch beneath the rose. I called Kwikset, and it’s a manufacturer defect- the model is supposed to have exposed screws, and they put the wrong rose on the exterior side!

  • Help! What do I do if the door is locked?? New homeowner and the former owners have lock and key set knobs for ALL the doors in the house. Weird. But now were locked out of the downstairs bathroom! Ugh. Is there anything we can do ourselves? Any suggestion would help. Things we’ve already done…..picked the lock with a prof. lock picking set, and drill. Nothing this set is impenetrable. Argh! Thanks 😊

  • This article just saved me. I kept looking for the ‘key-style’ catch but couldn’t find it. I watched your article and bought the latch piece (the only piece that was broken) and bingo…10 minutes later, fixed. I knew it was a Kwikset based on the part number engraved on the latch cover. Turns out it was this exact model. Thank you!

  • Hello, I have a strange door knob. No screws; there are two tiny hole. One on the front of the knob, and the second on the side. However, when I try to unhinge the knob, nothing happens. I looked in the holes and they are closed. If that makes sense. I peeled back the circle portion as shown in your article but, there is no indication of arrows or something that would unhinge the knob. Any suggestions?

  • Thank you so much. Knob for my back door fell off. I had tried that catch but didn’t give it the extra push so I couldn’t access the mounting screws properly to tighten them. Wish I had watched this 3 months ago instead of grumbling at the door every few days when the knob fell off again. Hope some kind of good fortune comes your way

  • Awesome… Wish I had checked this out before spending an hour trying to pry off this “Kwik Set – slow off” lock off my burglar bars. I went out after perusal this and popped off the lock in less than 2 seconds. Apparently I had not forced that little mechanism down far enough. Thank you, you saved my day and sanity!!!

  • Thank you very much. You saved my bacon for the time being. I installed a new storm door (without checking any knob clearances). We enjoyed having the door open and the sun shining in. When it began to get dark outside, you guessed it, the house door wouldn’t close enough to latch. Well I wasn’t going to rebuild any doors at night. So I tried removing the old 60’s era door knob without any luck. I turned to Youtube and with some searching, found your article. At least the door is shut and deadbolted.

  • Wayne, you’re a genius. Your secret catch allowed me to disassemble the lock. Now, however, when I reinstall it in the door, in order for everything to line up, the latch remains in the retracted position. Any thoughts given that vague description? (I’d include a picture here if I knew how.) Thanks again Wayne.

  • I bought a new door lock set to match the door lock on my front door. Tried to change out my old kwikset with the new one and I couldn’t figure out how to get it apart. I looked at the job for about two weeks and dreaded spending an afternoon doing the job. This article enabled me to easily get it apart and the new door lock installed. Thank you

  • My question if how to remove the lock itself from the knob. I have two in my my collection and want to remove the locks and turn them into training locks and can’t figure out how to get the darned locks out of the knobs. I bought the locks from a habitat for humanity resale warehouse and I have no key for either lock. I have opened them both several times using a short hook so that’s not a problem. Thanks for your time and these great vids.

  • PRY THE COVER OFF??? WOW FOR SHAME WIENER FOR SHAME I have always thought Weiner’s products were the best inn every aspect. Until having to remove my cover. Having to pry off the cover will always end up with some sort of damage. I was literally cringing and cursing the whole time I had to pry the cover off no matter how careful I tried to be I ended up with handful of scratches and hate this so very much because of the amount of money I spent on my front door walk in knob which are very nice but also very expensive. Yes considering all the parts involved the amount of damage done very little. But why would I want to damage it at all. Anyways, with all of the impressive features that wiener products have. Why can’t they come up with a cover that you do not have to pry off like it was a freaking hubcap or something. I am so cringing about scratching my cover and every time I walk by my door several times a day I cry a little. lol But it is an angry cry.
