How To Inspect External Drain Systems For Obstructions?

To troubleshoot and repair blocked or clogged drains, use a torch to look down the drain and check for any visible obstructions like leaves, twigs, or other debris. If visible obstructions are present, use gloves and remove them carefully. If no obstructions are visible, use a plunger to dislodge the blockage. Place a grid guard over the outside drain to prevent leaves from getting in. Avoid pouring used cooking oils or fats down the kitchen sink and absorb them with kitchen roll.

To fix a blocked or clogged drain, insert a drain rod into the blocked pipe and push it through, rotating clockwise. Add new rod sections until you feel resistance, indicating you’ve hit the blockage.

Blocked drain grids are typically found on the exterior of your home, with pipes from your bathroom and kitchen typically direct to an outside drain with a small drain grid cover. In-depth inspections of the exterior drainage system using CCTV video footage and 360-degree camera technology can help understand the drainage problem.

Managing a blocked outside drain is not just a messy inconvenience; it can lead to bigger plumbing problems and potential property damage. Unclogging methods include boiling water, baking soda and vinegar, and checking water levels in the drain chamber. Slow water drainage is one of the first signs of a blocked drain, and if the blockage is particularly noticeable, insert a small camera into the drain to visually inspect the interior and identify the blockage’s exact location and nature.

Removal of an outdoor drain blockage requires a drainage rod, which is long, thin, flexible, and often made with baking powder and vinegar. If the blockage occurs, pour a mix of baking powder and vinegar down the drain, wait for a few minutes, and then hose down the drain.

A blocked outside drain is a common issue that can lead to water damage and mold growth. It is crucial to identify and address these warning signs early on to prevent costly repairs and maintain a clean drainage system.

Slow drainage is the first sign of a blocked drain, as it may take longer than usual for water to drain from sinks, bathtubs, or showers. Ignoring this can result in further complications, such as water damage and mold growth, which may require more extensive repairs.

Unpleasant smells and odors from drains are another clear indication of a clogged drainage system. These smells can be caused by waste and other substances breaking down and decomposing, which can be particularly bothersome if the drains are located directly outside your home. It is essential to address these issues to prevent further complications and maintain a clean and functional drainage system.

How to locate an outside AC drain line?

The AC drain line is a condensate drain running from the indoor to the outdoor unit, typically found near the outdoor unit. It typically works by gravity, but some may use a small pump for drainage. A clogged drain line can cause the AC to stop blowing cool air or cooling entirely, which can be due to backlogs or blockages in the outdoor PVC pipe. Other signs of a clogged drain pipe include water dripping or flooding around the unit, water around the safety switch, moldy smells in the home, a full condensate pan, and signs of water damage around or under the air conditioner, on the floor, or near the fan. It is crucial to contact a professional to prevent mold-related health issues and ensure good indoor air quality. It is essential to contact a professional if you notice any of these signs.

  • My kitchen sink is clogged. Water won’t drain. Takes hours to finally go down. I check the exposed pipe underneath and they seem clear. I believe the clog is past that behind the wall somewhere. What’s best way to clear this? I’m thinking of renting a electric auger from Home Depot? Good idea? Which one?

  • Hey I’m having a problem I been having this problems almost a month I had some one come out and ranned a 75 ft snake down my sewer line I don’t have the outlet in the yard they had to do it from the vent on top of my house and they rannned out of reach so can it be clogged close to the street my yard is now that big where he could reach he was pulling a lot of wipes out my kids did

  • 2nd floor clog in the bathtub. Running an auger down the bathtub drain does nothing. Run the auger about 8-9 feet down the pipe below the bathroom sink in the same bathroom removes the clog. Have to auger it once a year. Now it’s backed up but it takes time to back up. Can take a shower for 4-5 minutes before the water starts pooling in the tub. Still drains though it is slower l and when I am done showering take barely over a minute to drain. Not backing as far as I can tell in the the first floor bathroom which is immediately below. Plumber wants to literally demolish the entire bathroom, rip out the walls and tub in both bathrooms. $12,000. Not including the thousands I would have to pay remodeling. I don’t bother with them. These are the same plumbers when he checked all the valves that are under the faucets and toilets that all 12 are frozen and to pay him $3,100 to replace them all. I simply unfroze 10 of them using a plumbers wrench. Three needed to be replaced but I did them myself. Only one gave me trouble due to how cramped it was.

  • We put a large pot of cooked spaghetti in our disposal on 2nd floor and its blocked bad.. i tried augering manually but didnt get very far. A plumber just left my house after 2.5 hrs and couldn’t clear it with a 75′ powered auger. He tried twice but no dice.( Not sure if it matters but his auger tip was broken off to nub that he bent slightly with pliers instead of those open coiled tips ive seen.) He said its one of the worst blocks hes seen and we’d have to cut a hole in the ceiling on 1st floor in garage, cut the pipe, and snake it that way. Should i get a 2nd opinion from a diff plumber? Thanks

  • I live in a really old house. In my basement i have a washing machine and a old sink that both connect to the main line. If i have a blockage in my second level bathtub will a clog on that floor cause water to fill up my sink in the basement or is that a clog in the sewer line under the basement floor? I also have two small cracked pvc pipes that go from the first floor to tge basement tgat run to the same sewer line. Will these 2 cracked pipes alos cause a issue with water not draining fast enough?

  • Thanks for posting. The mop in a bag hack is a great idea, especially since my dog destroyed my two store bought plungers. I couldn’t use it however, simply because my drain hole was too small. I was however able to clear it using a method that works for the toilet. A plastic curtain rail can be used as a sort of ‘DIY Dyno rod’. With a bit of shoving and twisting I finally got through the food plug. For the toilet I just shape one end of the curtain rail into a kinda scope, just by bending it, and it can dislodge paper stuck in the U-bend.

  • Appreciate the vid but one thing I don’t understand, if the u-bend is presumably there to stop solid bits (that could cause a blockage further along) from getting through, doesn’t pushing it through there (as opposed to removing the solid waste) just risk the problem occurring further downstream, somewhere more inaccessible? Am I misunderstanding the purpose of the U-bend etc?

  • I had a blocked kitchen drain pipe… was blocked below the p-trap, about two yards down into the drain pipe… it was a hell of a job clearing it. I didn’t dare use a power snake. (old copper drain pipe!) All the while hand snaking it, I had visions of breaking through the drain pipe wall…inside the wall! Nightmare scenario.

  • Absolute class tip, thanks Roger! The previous owner of my house had a penchant for pouring cooking fat down the drain by the back door, which solidified into fatbergs! This has caused me a couple of headaches as unfortunately whoever put the drains in didn’t put any inspection hatches on this section, and there is a 90 degree bend to the nearest manhole, making it impossible to rod. After hours of trying to shift it using a (not very) high pressure kit, the “mop in a carrier bag” trick finally got things moving again, within seconds of me giving it some welly!

  • Even easier hack – if you ever have an old garden hose, retain a couple of metres before you chuck it away. Then push that through a blockage – it will make a hole through the blockage, and then liquid in the gulley will flow through and begin to clear the blockage. If its REALLY bad, connect it to the tap, and push through the blockage, THEN turn on the tap, and it clears from the back of the blockage in seconds. Doesnt risk wrecking a mop if the bag leaks, and has cleared some horrendous blockages for me.

  • Thanks so much for the article, we had some success with this, our pipe contained mainly dirt/soil. Now water will run down the pipe but it won’t empty completely so backs up to a certain point in the pipe, it’s running far better than it was but there must still be a small blockage and I think it’s about a metre further on than the opening where there’s a bend. We’ve tried to continue plunging but no improvement, any suggestions?

  • I have one of these drains outside and it is a constant nuisance. Basically fat and soap residue runs outside hits the cold water in the u bend under the grate, cools and turns into a sludge that blocks the grate. Also god forbid any leaves get in there, as they simply cover the grate instead of washing through. Presumably these were designed as a smell and gas break but given all basins, sinks and showers now come with their own traps is it really necessary?

  • Not being critical, but simply amazed… I only have seen such “open pipe” works like this in Africa, South America or similar. Is this common in the UK? Normally sink waste (in normal plumbing) would be immediately diverted to the main sewage line. (*Edit* – And required as such by code in most Countries) That waste water in the gully drain in this article could, would, probably easily sloshed over that drain and cause all sorts of potential health issues. Shocking…… 😞 Why not simply connect this pipe to the other out pipes nearby in the article? And add some clean out fixings in the process just to be sane and healthy. IMHO.

  • I spent more than an hour with my arm down the drain clearing out all sorts of foul-smelling debris, as far round the bend as I could reach, all to no avail. I really didn’t think this was going to work, and the first 3 or 4 plunges were not encouraging, and then… woooosh!!! Brilliant! Thank you so much.

  • Hi I have a shower that is holding water, from sink. Sink is clear but shower still holding water a small amount. The drain to shower is outside and emptying and have plumber in and feels is blocked from shower to drains inside. Not opened outside inlet pipe as could damage if unscrew and then says will have to lift tiles in bathroom to repair pipe if cracks. What can I do to fix in your eyes. Kindly Trish
