How To Fix A Loose Door Knob On The Outside?

This video provides a step-by-step guide on how to replace a loose door knob, whether with or without screws and both locking and non-locking types. It demonstrates the process of identifying the type of door knob, gathering necessary tools, and implementing the repair. To fix a loose door knob, remove the knob, remove the rose on each side, expose the mounting plate screws, and check the latch plate screws on the edge of the door and the strike plate screws.

To tighten a loose door knob, use a screwdriver and twist the screws on both sides of the knob base clockwise. Tighten the long screws that secure the lockset’s mounting ring to the door. Look for a small lever around the outside of the knob and tilt it upward or downward to release the knob and mounting plate entirely.

Tighten the door hardware by opening the door, squeezing both sides of the assembly together, and tightening the two screws on the chassis. Use an awl or equivalent tool to depress the button and remove the inside handle. Unscrew the inside trim ring (lefty/loosey) to expose the screws. Check to see if the door lock is firmly secured in the door.

In conclusion, fixing a loose door knob involves tightening the screws, securing the base plate, and possibly inspecting the spindle. This simple and inexpensive fix can help prevent future loosening issues and ensure a secure and functional door.

  • I have been struggling to remove the round flat piece off my door. I used the same tools you used and I still cannot get that round piece OFF to get to the inside part to tighten my doorknob. I’ve been trying for several days to remove it. This is the BEST article I have seen on YouTube regarding the Kwikset door handle. Thank you.

  • Thank you! Every man that I’ve asked how to fix a loose handle said just take the flat piece off, which the loose part. But they really didn’t know about that little screw that goes in instead of out with tiny Alan tool. Wow! Now I know why they never offered to fix it. I thought I was the idiot. I wondering how does anyone get to screws or take the handle off? 🤔it took me two minutes well five minutes because I couldn’t stop laughing! If you don’t know, you just don’t know & YOUTUBE IT! THANKS AGAIN!

  • Many many thanks for your article. Sadly I have to come back to this (but thank you again for your article) every 2 months or so the door handle loosens wiggles it’s ridiculous. “He who knows all” (I know I’m being disrespectful but after all it’s me looking to fix this not he who knows all) says it’s because I bought something from home Depot and it was cheap. So, your opinion. Why does this continue to happen? The front door gets very little use but every 2 months or so I’ve got to go back in and fix it. Is there any way to make my fix, you’re fix, permanent

  • I have kwikset with a completely different setup. I had to use an allen-head wrench unfortunately when these things come loose the access to the allen-head wrench is at an angle (BAD DESIGN!) and it can be difficult to get the wrench in at the right place to get it out. For this reason apparently, one of my set screws is monkeyed up and I had to improvise to get it out. After getting the set-screw out (note they are reverse-threaded!!!), I pulled off the cover and reset the tensioning screws. Put everything back together with a prayer- these are not the nicest door-handle mechanisms I’ve seen to be sure. With the information in the article it ws close enough I could guess how the rest worked. Next time I build a house I’ll look for something nicer than Kwikset I s’pose. Best.

  • Great article! I am desperately trying to find out which Kwikset door knob that is that you show being tightened up? I love the way the plate screws into the door, it helps to keep the knob centered. I have searched and searched and cannot find that exact knob attachment method. I’m hoping you can steer me in the right direction for my door knob search. Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.
