To repair a torn Bible, align the edges and gently press them together. Place a weight or heavy object on top of the mended page to hold it in place while it dries. Leave it undisturbed for several hours or overnight. Once the adhesive is completely dry, remove the weight and check the page to ensure it is securely mended.
There are several ways to repair your Bible without rebinding it in a new cover:
- Cord insertion, which works on glued bindings and also works on broken sewing.
- Re-casing, which involves putting the book back into the original binding. Rebinding can be an excellent way to turn any regular Bible into a super-Bible. The cost for a family Bible restoration of this style averages between $1,200 and $1,500 based on the level of existing damage.
To repair a leather family Bible, follow a step-by-step guideline. First, remove the book cover using an exact-o knife or scissors to make bare the areas that need to be reglued. Use mineral oil on a soft cloth to wipe sparingly over the Bible, only if it is leather.
For missing parts of the page and tears in different pages, use Japanese paper to repair them. Sand away more (all) of the glue and glue the spine with Jade PVA. Add a fresh piece of burlap and seal with glue.
In summary, repairing a hardback Bible requires careful attention to detail and proper preparation.

How do you repair torn Bible pages?
In order to apply a tear repair, one must first stretch a piece of tape to cover the tear in question. The paper backing must then be removed, allowing the acid-free adhesive to be exposed. The tape must then be applied to the page, reuniting the torn edges. The tape should then be gently rubbed into place, thereby activating the adhesive and sealing it to the page. This process will ensure that the fact that the page was torn is not revealed.
How to fix Bible pages falling out?
Restoring your bible can be done using binding glue or binding tapes. Binding glue is ideal for loose pages or repairing text blocks to the cover spine. It can be used to reattach pages that have come loose over time, or to bond the pages back to the cover spine. Binding tape is typically used for reattaching loose or falling apart covers. The right application depends on the type of wear or damage you are trying to repair.
How can I fix my spine at home?
To align your spine, stand tall, position ears over the shoulders, tuck the chin in, hold shoulders back without forcing the chest out, keep the back straight but not tense, and keep hips aligned with the rest of the body. A stiff neck is not a serious medical condition but can interfere with daily activities and sleep. Poor posture is a common cause of back and neck pain, as it places undue stress on the spine, supporting muscles, and internal organs.
Correcting poor posture involves awareness and effort to sit, stand, walk, and sleep with good posture. Bad posture can have negative effects on the body, such as sitting with a curved spine, slumping over a desk, and walking with the head pushed forward or tilted while looking down. Making good posture a regular habit is essential for maintaining good health.
How to fix a Bible with water damage?
To dry water-damaged books, leave them closed, cover them with absorbent paper towels, and stand them on end to allow water to drain. Slip paper towels between the first and last pages of the book. Keep the humidity below 40% to prevent mold development. Circulate the air with a fan without directly aiming at the books. For slightly damp books, lay them flat on absorbent paper and place a clean weight on top. Air drying is a practical and convenient method with sufficient work space and a controlled environment.

Are old Bibles worth money?
The scarcity of antique Bibles that are over 200 years old serves to enhance their intrinsic value and collectability. Incomplete King James Bibles may also possess intrinsic value. It is also possible for individual leaves from Bibles that are centuries old to be of value, even in the absence of the entire Bible. The Gutenberg Bible, also known as the 42 Line Bible, is the most renowned and sought-after antique Bible, printed around 1455 using the technique of “moveable type.”
How to repair damaged books?
Library staff at Demco share their best book repair tips, often sourced from their customers on Facebook and Twitter. To keep books in top shape, it is essential to teach children the importance of being gentle with library books. To preserve and repair library materials, Demco offers various tips from staff.
One of the best tips is to teach students to properly care for books, reducing the need for repairs. This can be achieved by covering paperbacks with CircExtender before circulation, using hinge tape in heavily circulating books, and using strapping tape to adhere Demco book jacket covers.
Reinforced tape, such as strapping tape, is cost-effective and lasts longer for books that won’t be replaced regularly or are frequently checked out. It is important to remind students to let the library repair the books instead of trying to do it at home.
One of the best book care tips is prevention, using Demco book tape along the outside of the spines on paperbacks or at least the outside top of the spine to prevent cracking and fraying. By showing students the backpack of damaged books they couldn’t fix at the beginning of each school year, they can help prevent more damaged books from accumulating.
What to do with an old worn out Bible?
Disposing of old Bibles can be done in various ways, such as rebinding, burying it, or recycling. Restoration is possible if the cover is damaged or a section is loose. Burying is common in Jewish communities as a sign of respect. Recycling is another option, as it is paper and can be recycled. However, there is no single, proper method for disposing of old Bibles. Disposing of an old Bible is not a ritual or rule, but rather a personal decision that should be carefully considered and followed. It is important to consider the unique circumstances and preferences of each community when disposing of old Bibles.
How much does it cost to repair a Bible?
The financial outlay required to restore a Bible is contingent upon the dimensions and condition of the book in question. In general, the cost of restoration falls within the range of $100 to $200, with supplementary expenses incurred for more comprehensive repairs.
Can I superglue a book spine?
Loctite Super Glue Power Gel Control is a quick, long-lasting, and easy repair tool for book bindings and pages. Its rubber-infused formula is strong but flexible, ideal for hard-to-reach spots and dries transparent, making repairs nearly invisible. This product is ideal for joining signatures or sections of folded pages, a traditional method of making books. The glue only reaches the outermost page, requiring stitching the signatures together.
How to repair a book spine at home?
To repair a falling or shedding book, use book or binding glue to reattach loose pages and tighten up any space between the text block and the spine. Use a popsicle stick to spread the glue evenly and set the pages back on the spine. Binder tape is also a great way to reattach a fall off cover. Most craft or hobby stores carry book or binding glue in a tall, thin tube. Always purchase an acid-free glue to avoid disintegration or tearing of the spine. Set the pages aside in the right order to avoid accidentally gluing them back into the book.

Thank you for the lesson in book binding. My leather (?) binding on my bible has separated, and I needed some instruction on how to fix. Great to hear your child in the background. Trust me, treasure your family everyday, cause we grow old too fast and the children of our youth grow right along too. It’s a wonderful time when they are young. 🙂 God Bless you in your reading and studying “to shew yourself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” 2 Timothy 2:15 :=)
7.31.2024 This article is very helpful and timely for me today. I read my Bible every day. The hardcover Bible cover has separated and has a concave shape, so I am grateful for your article because that will help me restore this essential item of my daily life. Also, from a technical point of view, the article and editing is really outstanding. You are a very generous and caring person and I thank you for your work.
Jesus Christ died for our sins was buried and rose again the third day. we must all realize we’re a sinner and turn to Jesus and trust and believe that He died for your sins was buried and rose again the third day but trust in Him alone to save you from your sins and hell. Our sins separate us from God and God can’t allow any sin in heaven and we sin so Jesus had too die for our sins so we would have a way to heaven. He took the punishment of our sins upon Himself. I just wanted to share with you.

Covered with leather ribbons in it and so on. But I want to want to Gild the edges. I would like to find some heat transfer gilding to do the job with I however do not know who that you would and was wondering if you could give me a suggestion. I don’t want to join use the glue on stuff so any help that you can give as to where I can buy with sperm would be greatly appreciated.
My wife had a bible she dearly loved and as she’s a real note taker, it was filled wih YEARS of annotations. The cover separated on one side and we were thinking of getting it rebound. In looking on the web, we came across this and it was just what i needed. I ordered the materials and just now finished re-attaching the cover to her bible. It will be waiting for her when she gets home. Thanks SO much!
Thanks! I pray a blessing over you, Mr. Frost. I pray that you and your family are well taken care of. Please keep your soft heart. Keep it soft for people like me that you will meet along the way. Jesus Christ is the Living King! I pray infinite wisdom and knowledge. I pray that as you heal people in your ministry, you can prophesy their solution. Which is always back to Jesus. Good bless you and your family.
My bible started falling apart, tried hot gluing, didn’t work, tried tape obviously didn’t work and got totally called out for it when I found this article. 🤣 Thankfully I didn’t reach the “point of no return ” and was able to watch this article and followed along. Happy to say I’ve successfully fixed my own bible !!
My English-Spanish Bible fell apart. It was unusable. My wife gave this to me as a Christmas present in 2006. I have used it extensively in Cuba and daily here in the USA. It was with me on three occasions in Peru. I followed your instructions, and my old Bible now sits back on my desk! Thanks for the lesson on rebinding my Bible!
Thank you! God is good! This is exactly what I needed to see! I have been perusal your articles (and some others) hoping to learn basic repair, not really planning to rebind with new leather. I have a pigskin leather Scofield 3 ESV where the maps are separating from the spine. Now I see the appropriate fix. Not really what I wanted to endeavor, but… it is the right fix. Thank you. Best wishes and prayers for you entering your ministry calling!
Thank you so much for this detailed article! My granddaughter wanted her Bible repaired. I offered to buy her a new one, but she had a lot of notes and markings in it that she didn’t want to lose. Some pages had come loose and the cover had come off. With the help of your article, I was able to repair it. Thanks again!
your article of You and Rebinding is Insperational. 😊 although- My question is this– (and in NO way do I know anything of book binding. God’s Honest Truth) ! Any way, when you respined— instead of using the black paper,, can thin piece of soft real leather be used??…..and will the glue hold the leather?? Thanks 4 posting, GREAT article!!
Just stumbled across this article. Awesome. I’m excited about this tutorial. I bought a Thomas Nelson signature series KJV that has the same issue as this Pitt you just showed us how to repair. I’ve done several rebinds but wasn’t sure how to repair my TN signature series but now I know. Thanks again Jeremiah for the articles. Keep teaching us Padawans. Lol
Good job I have a local church Bible publishers 180 with a synthetic liner and it’s starting to crack next to the text block whats your take on synthetic liners it seems to me that they’re not really made to last that long what’s your take on Pace down paper liners vs. Synthetic liners what do you like better? Thank you
Thank you so much for pointing out the extra space to allow movement when it opens! I think I may be binding mine too tight or too close to the spine, especially for the thicker leather I’ve been trying. I’m probably putting undue strain on the block where the liner tabs attach. The physics are hard for me to predict precisely, and by the time you can see how it turned out, the glue is set.
Thank you for sharing this information. Your work is exceptional! My bible has this “classic” break that you mention and I want to repair it myself. It is an Oxford University Press Scofield bible that I got in 1982. All of the pages and signatures are in good shape, just a complete break on the back cover between the cover sheet and the bible paper. Will the repair method be the same for my Oxford as it is for your Cambridge in this article? Thanks!
I think I can repair my bible; but the thingy with the boards (like a vise grip) might prevent me from doing this. Thank you for your article and may God richly bless you and your family. GOD’S BLESSINGS TO ALL NATIONS AND PEOPLES Mark 16:15 Gospel! The good news about Jesus Christ and salvation from judgment on our sins. Jesus dined with His disciples the night before He went to the cross. Mark 14:22-25. Jesus and His disciples were eating a Passover meal together at the Last Supper. After partaking of bread and wine (His body and His blood), the Bible mentions the hymn Jesus sang with His disciples. “And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.” Mark 14:26. What were they singing on such an occasion? PRAISE! Psalms 113-118. THE GOOD NEWS “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes to the Father, but by me.” John 14:6 Jesus Christ loves us! We believe this! John 3:16-17. We believe Him and who He is! He is our Savior! GOD THE SON! ONLY HE SAVES. Ephesians 2:8 “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 not of works, lest any man should boast.” JESUS GAVE HIS LIFE FOR US AND LIVES AGAIN! 1 Corinthians 15: 3 “For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:” Blood coming from his body, NAKED, hanging on that cross like Roman torture weapon!
Thank you, that is a very helpful article. I was really disappointed after taking my bible from my teens to a local Christian publisher, and they really just used tape (all over some of the quotes I’d written in the endpapers!!! I have another preaching bible, that you’ve inspired me to have a go fixing. Your sound was just fine by the way, thank you, and blessings back to you! One question: The preaching bible still to be repaired has no stitched signatures, just a whole lot of pages all glued together… except for when they have come apart. There are a few individual pages in the middle of the two main sections. I plan to use bookcloth on it as you’ve shown. Any suggestions on how to ensure the individual pages are glued in? It was a gift from the church at the time, and is sentimental for that reason.
@frostleather Hey jermiah I have a question… So on the book spine when removing the old ribbon and taking of the extra material do you usually not remove the old glue? And if so why do you not? I have been rebinding bibles for only 6 months and I was told to remove that old glue. It would definitely save me on a step if I didn’t have to. Also where do you get your ribbons? Thanks!!
I think you are instructing everyone the HARD way to fix a “simple fix”.. that is a clean break IMO… the text block of the bible is still held together… no pages falling out.. that bible can be fixed in 15 minutes or less.. using a small tube of “liquid nail”.. a pair of vice grips.. and a clean towel or rag.. first of all open up the bible like you have it.. then run a squirt of “liquid nail”.. along the binding…close the bible back up tightly.. making sure that the cover and binding are fit snugly.. NO wiggle room.. use the vice grips and towel or rag.. around the gilded edge side of the bible and clamp it tight to assure.. that the fit stays snug the cover right up against the binding with NO air pockets…. the towel.. is to make sure the vice grips do not leave a vice grip mark on the soft leather cover… since that will have to be clamped TIGHT.. VERY TIGHT.. so there is no slippage.. allow to sit.. about 20-24 hours… remove the grips and towel,.. that little bit of “give” you spoke about.. will eventually work it’s way back in with moderate use.. I have fixed the bindings on dozens of bibles this way.. and they all look brand new… let’s not make this job complicated for amateurs…
